BIBLE STUDY King Ahab was an evil king. In fact, Ahab did more to provoke the Lord God of Israel than all the kings of Israel who were before him (1 Kings 16:33). The things that Ahab did made God angry. God wanted His people to be faithful to Him, but King Ahab led them away from God. God chose Elijah to get Ahab s attention. In 1 Kings 17, Elijah told Ahab that a drought was coming. God prevented rain in the land for three years. For Ahab, a man who worshiped Baal the false Canaanite god of rain and fertility the drought sent a strong message about the one true God. When God was ready to send rain on the earth, Elijah appeared to Ahab and instructed him to gather the Israelites and the prophets of the false gods at Mount Carmel. Elijah challenged the people to choose: Follow God or follow Baal. They couldn t do both. Elijah set up a challenge to prove who is the one true God. He faced off against the prophets of Baal. Each group prepared a bull on an altar and called on its deity to send fire from heaven. The prophets of Baal called and cried and cut themselves, but Baal did not answer. Elijah poured water on and around his altar. He called to God, and God sent fire from heaven. Everything was burned up. The prophets could not deny that the God of Elijah is the one true God, and God sent a great rain to end the drought. The false god Baal had no power. As you teach preschoolers this week, emphasize that only God the one true God has power to help His people and to save them. And He saves them through His Son, Jesus, whose name means the Lord saves. SUGGESTED THEME DECORATING IDEAS: Simulate a science lab, complete with beakers filled with different colored liquids and specimens. Position a dry erase board at the front of the room with lots of chemical equations. You may also choose to display the theme background slide. 1 // SESSION 1 // CYCLE 1 3-5 YEAR OLDS

INTRODUCE THE SESSION (3 MINUTES) [Large Group Leader enters wearing a white lab coat and carrying a clipboard and pencil.] Leader Hello, everyone! My name is [your name]. I am so glad you could join me today. Can anyone guess what my job is? [Allow kids to respond.] That s right, I m a scientist! Scientists study the world around them. We ask questions, make observations, make predictions, look for evidence, perform tests, and come to conclusions. I am able to learn so much about God s creation by using my science skills. God has created such a vast and incredible world for us to learn about! The more I learn about the world around us, the more I see God s fingerprints on everything He has made. All of creation points to the fact that there is only one true God! Studying God s creation is a great way to learn about God, but there is another way too. Can any of you think of another way we can learn about God? [Allow kids to respond.] Yes! We can study God s Word, the Bible. The Bible is God s Word to us and is a way that He reveals Himself to His people. In the Bible, we can read the story of who God is, how much He loves us, and what He has done to save us through Jesus. We will spend the next few weeks using our science skills to look for evidence in the Bible that will teach us about God. It s going to be a lot of fun! WATCH THE BIBLE STORY (10 MINUTES) Say The Bible has God s true words about Himself. Every story in the Bible happened in real life. Today s Bible story is from 1 Kings. Show the Bible story video Elijah Confronted Evil Ahab or tell the Bible story in your own words using the script provided. Use the bolded version for younger preschoolers. 2 // SESSION 1 // CYCLE 1 3-5 YEAR OLDS OPTIONAL BIBLE STORY SCRIPT Elijah Confronted Evil Ahab 1 Kings 18 King Ahab was the king in Israel. He was a bad king. Ahab did not worship God; he worshiped a false god named Baal (BAY uhl). King Ahab caused the Israelites to disobey God too. God was not happy with King Ahab, so God caused a drought. During a drought, there is no rain for a long time. God wanted Ahab to learn that Baal had no power. Only God the Creator of all things is powerful and in control of all things. No rain fell from the sky for three years. Then one day, God was ready to send rain. First, God sent a man named Elijah to talk to King Ahab. Elijah told Ahab, You have made trouble for Israel because you do not obey God, and you worship false gods. He told Ahab, the

Israelites, and all of the people who worshiped Baal to meet him at Mount Carmel. Elijah stood in front of the people and said, Make up your minds! If you believe the Lord is God, follow Him; but if Baal, then follow him. Elijah set up a contest to show who the one true God is. The worshipers of Baal made an altar for their false god. They put a bull on their altar. You call to Baal, Elijah said, and ask him to send fire to your altar. I will call on the Lord. The God who answers by fire is the one true God. From morning until noon, the worshipers of Baal called out to Baal, but no one answered. The people danced and cried loudly, but no one answered. Elijah dug a ditch around his altar and put a bull on a pile of wood. Then he asked for four jars of water to be poured on the wood. The altar was very wet. Elijah asked for even more water. Elijah prayed, Answer me, God, so that these people will know that You are God. God answered Elijah. God sent fire from the sky! The fire burned up the bull and the wood and the stones and the dust! It burned up the water that was in the ditch. God showed everyone that He is the one true God. The men who were watching fell to the ground. They said, The Lord, He is God! The Lord, He is God! Soon the sky grew dark with clouds, and God sent rain. God ended the drought and proved that He is the one true God. Christ Connection: The people who worshiped the false god Baal worked very hard to show they loved Baal, but Baal was silent. The one true God is not like false gods. Instead, God showed His love for us by sending His Son, Jesus, to be the Savior of the world. Timeline Poster Main Point Slide Big Picture question slides TALK ABOUT THE BIBLE STORY (1 MINUTE) Say God wanted His people to know that Baal had no power. Only God the Creator of all things is all-powerful, and He controls everything He made. God defeated the prophets of Baal. God proved that He is the one true God. Point to the Bible story picture on the giant timeline as you ask the following review questions: 1. What false god did King Ahab worship? (Baal) 2. What did God do because King Ahab led Israel to worship Baal? (sent a drought) 3. Who set up a contest to show who the one true God is? (Elijah) 4. Why did Baal not send fire to the altar? (because Baal is not real) 5. Why did Elijah want water poured on his altar? (so the people could see God do what is impossible) BIG PICTURE QUESTION (1 MINUTE) Say Our big picture question is, How many gods are there? There is one true God. The people who worshiped the false god Baal worked very hard to show they loved Baal, but Baal was silent. The one true God is not like false gods. Instead, God showed His love for us by sending His Son, Jesus, to be the Savior of the world. Key passage KEY PASSAGE (5 MINUTES) Open your Bible to Hebrews 1:1-2. Read the key passage aloud several times. Say Elijah was a prophet. God talked to His people through Elijah. Our key passage tells us that now God talks to His people in an even better way through His Son, Jesus. PRAYER (2 MINUTES) Invite kids to pray before dismissing to small groups. DISMISS TO SMALL GROUP 3 // SESSION 1 // CYCLE 1 3-5 YEAR OLDS

Welcome children and set out a few favorite theme-related toys, such as puzzles and blocks. blue construction paper tape ACTIVITY (10 MINUTES) HOP IN PUDDLES Tape pieces of blue construction paper to the floor, close enough together for preschoolers to hop from paper to paper. Guide preschoolers to take turns hopping in the puddles. Say The people in today s Bible study could not jump in puddles because there had been no rain in the land for three years! God stopped the rain because King Ahab was leading God s people to worship a false god named Baal. Let s discover what happened. 10 minutes after the start of service Break into groups of 10 or less children for Small group blocks, 24 buckets, 2 ACTIVITY (10 MINUTES) RUN AN ALTAR BUILDING RELAY Place 12 blocks in each bucket. Line up two teams single file behind each bucket. Explain that when you say go, the first child in line should take a block from the bucket, walk it across the room, set down the block, and walk back to the end of the line. The next child in line should do the same, stacking his block on the first one to build an altar. The first team to complete their altar using all 12 blocks is the winner. Play again as time allows. Say The worshipers of Baal made an altar for their false god. Elijah built an altar for the one true God. God sent fire from the sky to burn up His altar and everything around it. God defeated the prophets of Baal. Only God the Creator of all things is all-powerful and in control of all things. SNACK TIME Gather preschoolers for snack time. Thank God for the snack.remind preschoolers that Elijah told Ahab, the Israelites, and all of the people who worshiped Baal to meet him at Mount Carmel. When God defeated the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel, God showed everyone that He is the one true God. TRANSITION When a child finishes his snack, guide him to throw away any trash. He may select a book or puzzle to examine, play quietly with toys, or color the Journal coloring page. 4 // SESSION 1 // CYCLE 1 3-5 YEAR OLDS

crayons Journal Page JOURNAL PAGE Offer the journal page and invite preschoolers to draw a picture of an altar covered with fire. Remind preschoolers that there is one true God. God has power over everything, and He alone deserves worship. Pray for the children. PRAY Say God, thank You for sending Jesus to do all the work for us to be rescued from sin. Thank You for the love You showed us when You sent Your Son, Jesus, to be the Savior of the world. Amen. While preschoolers might not be ready to respond to the gospel, use this guide to help little minds begin to grasp big truths about Jesus and the kingdom of God. GOD IS KING. Ask: Who is in charge at home? Who is in charge over the whole world? Explain that God made everything! He is King over everything, and He is in charge. WE SINNED. Ask: Have you ever done something wrong? Tell preschoolers that everyone sins, or disobeys God. Our sin makes God sad. GOD SENT JESUS. Explain that God must punish sin. He loves us and He sent His Son, Jesus, to earth. Jesus came to take away the punishment for sin. JESUS LOVES. Ask: Do you like presents? Explain that Jesus gives us the best present. He never did anything wrong, but He was punished in our place. Jesus wants to take away our sin because He loves us. Pray that God will save your preschoolers. As you faithfully teach the Bible, you are planting gospel seeds in children s hearts. Ask God to grow the preschoolers into children who love and trust in Jesus. THE GOSPEL: GOD S PLAN FOR ME Use Scripture and the guide provided in the classroom to explain to boys and girls how to become a Christian. Assign individuals to meet with kids who have more questions. If this is not possible, encourage boys and girls to ask their parents, leader, or other Christian adults any questions they may have about becoming a Christian.
