Pastor s Message October 2016 It s the time of year when birds are flocking for the flight south. Most birds that migrate in the company of others do so in a swarm. Geese however, fly in the very distinctive V formation. Scientist share with us that geese fly in formation for two reasons. First it is easier. Each bird flies slightly higher than the bird he is following which leads to a reduction in wind resistance for all but the lead bird. The birds take it in turns to fly lead. When one is tired he drops back and other bird takes the lead position. Using a rotating leader means the group can fly far longer than any individual bird could alone. The second reason to fly in the V formation is that it is easier to keep track of every bird in the group. (Fighter pilots use a V formation for this reason.) Scientists even speculate that flying in formation may help the birds with communication and coordination while in flight. Within the Christian community we don t travel in the V formation however, we receive some of the same benefits from being in the presence of each other as migrating geese do from flying in the V formation. When we worship, serve, play and pray together we, like the geese, have more strength, patience, creativity and faith. We can lean on each other and benefit from sharing the gifts of each for the benefit of all. When a member of the Christian community ( AKA Elstad or Highland Prairie) is tired, sick or done flying the lead position, we know another will take a turn flying the lead position. While none of us can speak Goose we can all imagine that all those honks we hear as a V formation flies overhead translate into: Good Work! Thanks for the help. I m tired. What can I do for you? We re nearly there. Has anyone seen (fill in the blank) today? Below are some guidelines for how we can support each other as we travel through life together. Shalom Pastor Marie Thessalonians 5:11 Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing. Romans 12:13 Share with God's people who are in need. Practice hospitality. 1 John 3:16-18 This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers. If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions. Herbjorn Gausta Art Tour ~ October 20, 2016 Artwork of Norwegian-born artist Herbjorn Gausta, renowned for his alter paintings, will be featured on this country church tour. We will also view historic works by three additional Norwegian-American painters, Sara Kirkeberg Raugland, Arne Berger and August Klagstad; informative narration by local guide. The full day motor coach tour beings in Harmony at Greenfield Lutheran Church at 9:30 a.m. and we will meander along the back roads through beautiful Bluff Country, stopping at seven country churches, which have preserved their original altars and furnishings. A noon meal is included and will be served at Scheie Lutheran Church in Newberg. The menu features Norwegian-style cold lunch with a cup of soup, rommegrot and Norwegian baking. Reservations due by October 1, 2016; no refunds after October 5th, $50 per person with checks payable to Harmony Area Historical Society, P.O. Box 291, Harmony, MN 55939. The Southeastern Minnesota Synod includes two campus ministries and one student congregation. The campus ministries are Crossroads Campus Ministry in Mankato and the Lutheran Campus Center in Winona. The student congregation is St. Olaf College Student Congregation in Northfield. We give thanks for these ministries among us and the many ways they accompany young adults. On October 23, 2016, all congregations are invited to celebrate Campus Ministry Sunday! As a synod, it is important that we come together to collectively honor and support the ways the Holy Spirit is at work on the college campuses within our synod. There are a variety of ways you can incorporate Campus Ministry Sunday into the life of your congregation on October 23. Rev. Corrine Haulotte (Winona) and Rev. Tammy Dahlvang (Mankato) have put together a variety of resources including prayers, Bible readings, and hymn recommendations. They are available on our synod website at http://semnsynod.org/campusministry. Our campus ministry connections in Mankato, Winona, and Northfield are places of welcome and acceptance for college students. Rev. Haulotte shares, The Spirit is at work here people are hearing on campus and in the community that we re a welcoming group, and they are starting to come and see! The people of the Southeastern Minnesota Synod have a wonderful opportunity to support the good work the Spirit is doing through campus ministries in our synod. Please make a commitment to uplift Campus Ministry Sunday on October 23! To learn more about the campus ministries and student congregation within our synod, visit their websites! Crossroads Campus Ministry Mankato Rev. Tammy Dahlvang Welcome to Crossroads! Lutheran Campus Center Winona Rev. Corrine Haulotte http://www.lccwinona.com/ St. Olaf College Student Congregation Rev. Matthew Marohl & Rev. We praise your name for your servants in Crossroads Campus Ministry, the Lutheran Campus Center, and the St. Olaf Student Congregation. We give thanks for all those who make known the good news of Christ Jesus on college campuses in our synod. Sustain these ministries with your grace so that they might continue to share your love in all they say and do. In your holy and precious name we pray, Amen.
