hw`hy YHWH-Qanna : The Lord Is Jealous Introduction Names of provision: Names of fellowship: Names of warfare: Jireh - Sees and Provides Rapha Who heals you Ro iy - Who shepherd me Shammah Is there Shalom - Our peace iysh Milchaamaah man of war Nissi Our banner Zebaoth of hosts Ex 34:14 Do not worship any other god, for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God. NIV In Hebrew, the middle part of this verse reads Yahweh Qanaa' shªmow, LORD-Jealous is name. This is the last name we will look at in the warfare group and it serves as a bridge to the sanctification group of names (Lord who makes you holy and Lord our righteousness). It is a warfare name because the Lord moves to protect His interests. It is a sanctification term because His jealousy is motivated by His holiness, which will not tolerate competitors or those who sin against Him. In this sense, jealousy can be defined as being filled with righteous zeal. As YHWH-Qanna, the Lord reveals to us that He is a jealous God who has espoused us in jealousy and desires us to have a holy zeal for Him. I. Our God Is a Jealous God 1. No other gods A. The Second Commandment Ex 20:4-6 4 "You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but showing love to a thousand [generations] of those who love me and keep my commandments. NIV The First Commandment is to have no other gods before Him. The Second Commandment prevents us from making any image to worship. He is jealous. He will have us showering our affection on no one else! Page 1 of 10

B. Vain imaginations Deut 29:14-21 14 Neither with you only do I make this covenant and this oath; 15 But with him that standeth here with us this day before the LORD our God, and also with him that is not here with us this day: 16(For ye know how we have dwelt in the land of Egypt; and how we came through the nations which ye passed by; 17 And ye have seen their abominations, and their idols, wood and stone, silver and gold, which were among them:) 18 Lest there should be among you man, or woman, or family, or tribe, whose heart turneth away this day from the LORD our God, to go and serve the gods of these nations; lest there should be among you a root that beareth gall and wormwood; 19 And it come to pass, when he heareth the words of this curse, that he bless himself in his heart, saying, I shall have peace, though I walk in the imagination of mine heart, to add drunkenness to thirst: 20 The LORD will not spare him, but then the anger of the LORD and his jealousy shall smoke against that man, and all the curses that are written in this book shall lie upon him, and the LORD shall blot out his name from under heaven. 21 And the LORD shall separate him unto evil out of all the tribes of Israel, according to all the curses of the covenant that are written in this book of the law: KJV It is almost easy for us to think ourselves safe from idol worship. After all, when was the last time you carved out an image of wood and then bowed down to it as if it were your Creator? But when we understand that idols are vain imaginations, then we can appreciate the danger. We are to worship the Lord as He is, not as we imagine Him to be. Our heart is to seek after Him, not our own lusts. Gen 6:5-6 5 And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. 6 And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. KJV Imagination is to the soul of man what revelation is to his spirit. When the imagination becomes evil, all manner of wickedness is produced. It was such a condition of mankind that caused God to flood the earth. C. The glory of the Lord The name YHWH-Qanna was revealed in Exodus 34:14. We need to see this verse in its context. Show me your glory Ex. 33:12-23 Page 2 of 10

The Lord proclaims His Name and glory Ex. 34:5-7 Go with us Ex. 34:8-9 Jealous is my name Ex. 34:10-14 Ex 34:10-14 10 And he said, Behold, I make a covenant: before all thy people I will do marvels, such as have not been done in all the earth, nor in any nation: and all the people among which thou art shall see the work of the LORD: for it is a terrible thing that I will do with thee. 11 Observe thou that which I command thee this day: behold, I drive out before thee the Amorite, and the Canaanite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite. 12 Take heed to thyself, lest thou make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land whither thou goest, lest it be for a snare in the midst of thee: 13 But ye shall destroy their altars, break their images, and cut down their groves: 14 For thou shalt worship no other god: for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God: KJV That He is a jealous God is part of the revelation of His glory! As a jealous God, He promised to drive the ites out before them. Deut 4:23-24 23 Take heed unto yourselves, lest ye forget the covenant of the LORD your God, which he made with you, and make you a graven image, or the likeness of any thing, which the LORD thy God hath forbidden thee. 24 For the LORD thy God is a consuming fire, even a jealous God. KJV Understanding that the Lord is a jealous God is a powerful revelation. Mr. Bill Gothard said in a recent ATI training that the lesson of God being jealous has transformed his life on a deeper level than anything else before. As Deuteronomy notes, He is a consuming fire. And we cannot afford to trifle with fire. 2. He is a consuming fire. A. Jealousy is like a fire. Ps 79:5 How long, O LORD? Will you be angry forever? How long will your jealousy burn like fire? NIV Jealousy is a passionate feeling. It causes one s heart to burn like fire. Of all the names we have examined, this is the first one that ascribes feeling to our God. Interesting that it isn t The LORD is Love or The LORD who is Merciful, but the Lord is jealous!! And His jealousy is His fire! Page 3 of 10

B. His zeal will cleanse the Creation. 2 Peter 3:10-14 10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare. 11 Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives 12 as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. 13 But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness. 14 So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him. NIV His fire is a cleansing fire that pours out in righteous wrath. Only holiness survives before it! C. His zeal leads Him to war. Deut 9:1-5 1 Hear, O Israel. You are now about to cross the Jordan to go in and dispossess nations greater and stronger than you, with large cities that have walls up to the sky. 2 The people are strong and tall--anakites! You know about them and have heard it said: "Who can stand up against the Anakites?" 3 But be assured today that the LORD your God is the one who goes across ahead of you like a devouring fire. He will destroy them; he will subdue them before you. And you will drive them out and annihilate them quickly, as the LORD has promised you. 4 After the LORD your God has driven them out before you, do not say to yourself, "The LORD has brought me here to take possession of this land because of my righteousness." No, it is on account of the wickedness of these nations that the LORD is going to drive them out before you. 5 It is not because of your righteousness or your integrity that you are going in to take possession of their land; but on account of the wickedness of these nations, the LORD your God will drive them out before you, to accomplish what he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. NIV Why did the Lord break out against the Anakites in a devouring fire? Because of their wickedness and to fulfill a promise. In holiness and covenant, He is a zealous warrior. Page 4 of 10

3. Zeal in warfare Nah 1:2-3 2 The LORD is a jealous and avenging God; the LORD takes vengeance and is filled with wrath. The LORD takes vengeance on his foes and maintains his wrath against his enemies. 3 The LORD is slow to anger and great in power; the LORD will not leave the guilty unpunished. His way is in the whirlwind and the storm, and clouds are the dust of his feet. NIV Isa 42:13 The LORD shall go forth as a mighty man, he shall stir up jealousy like a man of war: he shall cry, yea, roar; he shall prevail against his enemies. KJV Isa 59:16-20 16 He saw that there was no one, he was appalled that there was no one to intervene; so his own arm worked salvation for him, and his own righteousness sustained him. 17 He put on righteousness as his breastplate, and the helmet of salvation on his head; he put on the garments of vengeance and wrapped himself in zeal as in a cloak. 18 According to what they have done, so will he repay wrath to his enemies and retribution to his foes; he will repay the islands their due. 19 From the west, men will fear the name of the LORD, and from the rising of the sun, they will revere his glory. For he will come like a pent-up flood that the breath of the LORD drives along. 20 "The Redeemer will come to Zion, to those in Jacob who repent of their sins," declares the LORD. NIV II. He Is a Jealous Husband 1. The jealous fire Song 8:6 Set me as a seal upon your heart, As a seal upon your arm; For love is as strong as death, Jealousy as cruel as the grave; Its flames are flames of fire, A most vehement flame. NKJV 2. The jealous husband The test of bitter waters Numbers 5:12-30 Num 5:12-16 12 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, If any man's wife go aside, and commit a trespass against him, 13 And a man lie with her carnally, and it be hid from the eyes of her husband, and be kept close, and she be defiled, and there be no witness against her, neither she be taken with the manner; 14 And the spirit of jealousy come upon him, and he be jealous of his wife, and she be defiled: or if the spirit of jealousy come upon him, and he be jealous of his wife, and she be not defiled: Page 5 of 10

15 Then shall the man bring his wife unto the priest, and he shall bring her offering for her, the tenth part of an ephah of barley meal; he shall pour no oil upon it, nor put frankincense thereon; for it is an offering of jealousy, an offering of memorial, bringing iniquity to remembrance. 16 And the priest shall bring her near, and set her before the LORD: KJV When a wife is unfaithful, a spirit of jealousy is naturally aroused in the husband. If his jealousy is unfounded suspicion, the test of bitter waters exonerates the wife and reconciles the two. Jealousy seeks vengeance Prov 6:32-35 32 But a man who commits adultery lacks judgment; whoever does so destroys himself. 33 Blows and disgrace are his lot, and his shame will never be wiped away; 34 for jealousy arouses a husband's fury, and he will show no mercy when he takes revenge. 35 He will not accept any compensation; he will refuse the bribe, however great it is. NIV The raw emotion of a spouse wronged is the best word picture of jealousy. Whether the jealousy is directed at the errant partner or aroused in their behalf, it touches the raw nerve of wrath and vengeance. No ransom is accepted by the wronged husband only blows on the offender will satisfy him. Fire and blood causes jealousy to cease Ezek 16:36-42 36 Thus saith the Lord GOD; Because thy filthiness was poured out, and thy nakedness discovered through thy whoredoms with thy lovers, and with all the idols of thy abominations, and by the blood of thy children, which thou didst give unto them; 37 Behold, therefore I will gather all thy lovers, with whom thou hast taken pleasure, and all them that thou hast loved, with all them that thou hast hated; I will even gather them round about against thee, and will discover thy nakedness unto them, that they may see all thy nakedness. 38 And I will judge thee, as women that break wedlock and shed blood are judged; and I will give thee blood in fury and jealousy. 39 And I will also give thee into their hand, and they shall throw down thine eminent place, and shall break down thy high places: they shall strip thee also of thy clothes, and shall take thy fair jewels, and leave thee naked and bare. 40 They shall also bring up a company against thee, and they shall stone thee with stones, and thrust thee through with their swords. 41 And they shall burn thine houses with fire, and execute judgments upon thee in the sight of many women: and I will cause thee to cease from playing the harlot, and thou also shalt give no hire any more. Page 6 of 10

42 So will I make my fury toward thee to rest, and my jealousy shall depart from thee, and I will be quiet, and will be no more angry. KJV The jealousy of the husband is not assuaged without vengeance. This shows us the passion of the cross. The Lord poured out His jealous anger and Jesus bore it all for our unfaithfulness. 3. We are espoused to Him A. He has zeal for His house. Ps 69:9 for zeal for your house consumes me, and the insults of those who insult you fall on me. NIV John 2:14-17 14 In the temple courts he found men selling cattle, sheep and doves, and others sitting at tables exchanging money. 15 So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple area, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. 16 To those who sold doves he said, "Get these out of here! How dare you turn my Father's house into a market!" 17 His disciples remembered that it is written: "Zeal for your house will consume me." NIV We are His house and He has a holy zeal for His Bride. B. He bled for a clean Bride. Eph 5:25-27 25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. NIV C. We need to be chaste. 2 Cor 11:2-3 2 I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy. I promised you to one husband, to Christ, so that I might present you as a pure virgin to him. 3 But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent's cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ. NIV Heb 10:26-31 26 If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, Page 7 of 10

27 but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God. 28 Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. 29 How much more severely do you think a man deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God under foot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified him, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace? 30 For we know him who said, "It is mine to avenge; I will repay," and again, "The Lord will judge his people." 31 It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. NIV 1 Cor 10:20-22 20 No, but the sacrifices of pagans are offered to demons, not to God, and I do not want you to be participants with demons. 21 You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too; you cannot have a part in both the Lord's table and the table of demons. 22 Are we trying to arouse the Lord's jealousy? Are we stronger than he? NIV III. We Need to Have a Zeal for Him 1. In the Spirit, not the flesh Rom 12:11 Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord; KJV 1 Cor 3:3 For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men? KJV Our fervency is to be in the Spirit. When we allow our carnality to be inflamed, it always leads to wickedness and division. 2. Zealous for spiritual things 1 Cor 14:1, 39 KJV 1 Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy. 39 Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues. We should pursue spiritual gifts with zeal and earnestly covet to prophesy. 3. Going to war Num 25:6-12 6 And, behold, one of the children of Israel came and brought unto his brethren a Midianitish woman in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, who were weeping before the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. 7 And when Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from among the congregation, and took a javelin in his hand; Page 8 of 10

8 And he went after the man of Israel into the tent, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her belly. So the plague was stayed from the children of Israel. 9 And those that died in the plague were twenty and four thousand. 10 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 11 Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, while he was zealous for my sake among them, that I consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy. 12 Wherefore say, Behold, I give unto him my covenant of peace: KJV Phinehas made no peace treaty with sin, so the Lord made a covenant of peace with him. 2 Cor 7:10-11 10 For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death. 11 For behold this selfsame thing, that ye sorrowed after a godly sort, what carefulness it wrought in you, yea, what clearing of yourselves, yea, what indignation, yea, what fear, yea, what vehement desire, yea, what zeal, yea, what revenge! In all things ye have approved yourselves to be clear in this matter. KJV Godly sorrow works in us that zeal, that jealous desire to eradicate sin from our lives and our company. 2 Cor 10:3-6 3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: 4 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) 5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; 6 And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled. KJV Our Lord is a jealous God, therefore we must cast down vain imaginations and bring every thought to His obedience. Isa 30:18-22 18 Yet the LORD longs to be gracious to you; he rises to show you compassion. For the LORD is a God of justice. Blessed are all who wait for him! 19 O people of Zion, who live in Jerusalem, you will weep no more. How gracious he will be when you cry for help! As soon as he hears, he will answer you. 20 Although the Lord gives you the bread of adversity and the water of affliction, your teachers will be hidden no more; with your own eyes you will see them. 21 Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, "This is the way; walk in it." Page 9 of 10

22 Then you will defile your idols overlaid with silver and your images covered with gold; you will throw them away like a menstrual cloth and say to them, "Away with you!" NIV By the leading of His Spirit (verse 21) we will be able to march forward and defile the idols that ensnared us. Conclusion Because our God is a jealous God, we need to be holy. Isa 33:14-17 14 The sinners in Zion are terrified; trembling grips the godless: "Who of us can dwell with the consuming fire? Who of us can dwell with everlasting burning?" 15 He who walks righteously and speaks what is right, who rejects gain from extortion and keeps his hand from accepting bribes, who stops his ears against plots of murder and shuts his eyes against contemplating evil-- 16 this is the man who will dwell on the heights, whose refuge will be the mountain fortress. His bread will be supplied, and water will not fail him. 17 Your eyes will see the king in his beauty and view a land that stretches afar. NIV Heb 12:26-29 26 At that time his voice shook the earth, but now he has promised, "Once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens." 27 The words "once more" indicate the removing of what can be shaken-that is, created things-so that what cannot be shaken may remain. 28 Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, 29 for our "God is a consuming fire." NIV Amen! Page 10 of 10
