"We began this campaign last year to help create a culture of prayer in our conference as the basis for a renewal and revival of our churches," Bishop Cho said. "This year May 24 (Sunday) is the date of our conference-wide Day of Prayer. I invite every church to remember this day and to pray for a renewal and revival of the churches in our conference and in the entire United Methodist Church." Source: vaumc.org Image Source: Imagebank.org.uk 31-day Devotional You are invited to engage in these 31 days of devotion and prayer. The Virginia Conference has provided a 31-day Devotional to help us become more engaged in prayer. It can be accessed on the Virginia Conference website (www.vaumc.org/ ncfilerepository/ atn/ evcdevotional.pdf) or ask Leigh to print you a copy. Source: vaumc.org

From the Pastor's Pen For everything there is a season (Ecclesiastes 3:1-8) Six years ago, on a sunny day in May, I drove from Winchester to Mathews, to meet the Staff/Pastor Parish Relations Committee at Central United Methodist Church. As I started across the Piankatank River, God breathed this thought through my mind: Welcome home. Without having met a soul, I knew I was where God was sending me. You welcomed me from the start, and I will always be grateful for my time in ministry here with you all. Our time together has been filled with worship, baptisms and celebrations of lives well lived. We have marked six seasons of the Church Year from Advent to Christmas and Lent to Easter and everything in between. Shrimp dinners, UMM breakfasts, UMW birthday luncheons and Christmas caroling, Serving Our Neighbors Sunday last June, the Early Bird Breakfast, Blessing of the Animals, community Thanksgiving gatherings and Advent Family Day. Watching the children growing in Christ and in the life of the church, VBS, the children s/youth choir, mission projects, Nothing But Nets and the Heifer Project. Growing Sunday school classes and watching them reach out to the community in so many ways. Serving on the District Mission trip to Brooklyn, Hands Across Mathews, the Mattaponi Healing Eagle Clinic, Three Rivers Healthy Families, and countless unknown families through Kits for Conference and the Christmas Store. Bible studies, Monday Morning Prayer, Creation Care, choir, visiting and praying with you in times of need. I cannot possibly list everything here! Welcome Central Church will welcome Rev. John Choi to serve as our pastor beginning July 1. John Choi, a native of Korea, has been serving pastoral appointments in the Virginia Conference since 2004. After finishing high school in Georgia, he graduated from Emory University in 1996 with a degree in history, and from Asbury Theological Seminary in 1999 with a Master of Divinity degree. He was ordained an elder in the Virginia Annual Conference in 2011. John has served on the staff of a Korean congregation in Northern Virginia, and since 2008 he has served Saint John s United Methodist Church in Buena Vista. He began his pastoral work with multi-racial military families and has since counted as his blessing chances to meet with people of different cultures. John s parents serve a Korean Methodist church in Herndon. A younger brother is a chaplain in the U.S. Navy and will shortly begin his new assignment in Yokosuka, Japan. In his ministry and personal life John seeks to grow in prayer and appreciates music. When away from work, he has been known to pick up a guitar a few times a year and to resist checking baseball scores throughout the evening. Now I have been appointed to serve another congregation, Bethany UMC in Hampton. Leaving is a tender time, for both pastors and congregations, but I know that you folks will continue in ministry for the glory of God, and I am so grateful to have worked among you. I pray that God will richly bless you and your labors for Christ. In deep appreciation and Christ s love, Suzanne Page 2

After 15 years, she retired from Bank of America. Becky is originally from Missouri (speak slowly and distinctly, she hasn t quite acquired the ear for southern accents!). She resides on Gwynn s Island. In 2013, she joined Central and added her voice to the choir. If you have any questions for our new treasurer, she is in the office Tuesday through Thursday in the afternoon. She can be reached by email at treasurer@centralumcmathews.org. Stop by and say hi. Hospitality Ministry We would like to thank everyone for their contributions to the reception for Mason and Anne South s family and friends. The request for food from the congregation was met with generosity. The volunteers who helped set up, decorate, greet and offer the blessing, and clean up were a joy to work with. We are fortunate to have many who offered their assistance and if you were not called on this time, we look forward to using your talents in the future. Our fellowship hall is used often and by different groups in the church as well as outside organizations. We are encouraging all groups to please treat this room as a public space and not a catch all room. Your help in keeping our fellowship hall neat and clean and ready for use would be greatly appreciated. Our Ushers/Greeters for May are Pat and Chris Moughon for the 8:30 service and Pat Gwaltney and the youth will serve at the 11:00 service and on the 5 th Sunday. We continue to enjoy refreshments following the 8:30 service and encourage everyone to join us for coffee and snacks. We are always looking for volunteers to provide refreshments. Paul Townsend Memorial Class The Italian dinner for our April gathering was delicious. During the business meeting plans for Mother's Day were finalized. Please remember to honor your love one in our special Mother's Day church bulletin by calling a member of the committee or filling out the prepared form before Sunday, May 3. Thanks in advance for your support with this class project. Please remember May and June are graduation months and we will need to know if any members of Central have a child or grandchild graduating from high school or college this year. We will be recognizing these young people during both services on Sunday, June 7. Please call Phyllis at 725-3751 with this information. We are proud of our graduates; however, the deadline for facts on these folks is May 31. Since May is so busy for us, the class will not have a meeting. We voted to have a picnic in June instead. Our hearts are saddened by the passing of our class member Mason South. Our love and sympathy go out to Anne and her entire family. Please continue to hold Anne in your hearts and prayers.
