Patrick, SNJM, PhD was born April 5, 1941 in Washington, DC and received her early education from Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary in Silver Spring, MD, entering that community in Rome, NY in 1958. During 1960-73 she taught music, English, and religion at Holy Names academies in Tampa, Albany (NY), and Silver Spring. She participated as an elected delegate in post-vatican II chapters of her congregation, served as founding president of the Washington, DC Council of Women Religious (1970-73), and completed degrees in English (BA, Medaille College, 1969, MA, University of Maryland, 1972). During 1973-75, Sr. Anne chaired the Committee on Women in Church and Society of the National Assembly of Women Religious, representing an umbrella group of U.S. women religious, Sisters Uniting, at the 1975 International Women s Year Tribune in Mexico City, and assisting in early planning for the 1975 Women s Ordination Conference in Detroit. Articles on justice for women were first published in 1972, and she continued this writing during graduate studies at the University of Chicago Divinity School, where she completed degrees in Divinity (AM, 1976) and Religion and Literature (PhD, 1982), and served as Lecturer during 1978-80. In 1980, Sr. Anne joined the faculty of Carleton College in Northfield, MN, chairing the Department of Religion during 1986-91 and 2000-03, and retiring as William H. Laird Professor of Religion and the Liberal Arts in 2009. She also held visiting professorships at the University of Tulsa (1989) and St. John s University (NY, 1996-97). From 1983 to 1985, Sr. Anne helped lead the Moral Theology Seminar of the Catholic Theological Society of America. She was elected to the society s board in 1985 and to presidential office in 1987. As President-elect, Sr. Anne planned the 1989 convention on Providence and Responsibility: The Divine and Human in History, and she served as the third woman President of CTSA in 1989-90. Sr. Anne represented CTSA at founding meetings of the International Network of Societies for Catholic Theology, of which she was Vice-president during 1996-2002. In 2009 she received the Ann O Hara Graff Award from the CTSA Women s Consultation in Constructive Theology, and in 2013 the CTSA s highest honor, the John Courtney Murray Award for outstanding and distinguished achievement in Theology. Sr. Anne has also been elected to the board of the Society of Christian Ethics, and served as an editor for the Religious Book Club, and as an editorial consultant for various journals and publishers. She has published many articles and book chapters on religious, ethical, and literary topics, and is the author of several monographs: Liberating Conscience: Feminist Explorations in Catholic Moral Theology (1996), Women, Conscience, and the Creative Process (2009), and Conscience and Calling: Ethical Reflections on Catholic Women s Church Vocations (2013). She is now compiling a volume of her writings to be published by Orbis Books. Scope and Content The papers of Anne E. Patrick, SNJM, PhD, span the years 1969-2015, and have been divided into three series, consisting of Patrick s doctoral dissertation, master s thesis, publications in numerous periodicals and monographs, and a copies of her monographs Liberating Conscience, Women Conscience, and the Creative Process, and Conscience and Calling. Documents from various conferences, seminars, and events at multiple educational institutions are also included. Series 1: Academic, 1972-1982, Box 1, Box 3 The Series contains an unbound copy of Dr. Patrick s 1982 doctoral dissertation, H. Richard Niebuhr s Ethics of Responsibility : A Resource for Literary Criticism and her 1972 Master s Thesis, Eschatological Perspective in the Major Novels of Graham Greene. Series 2: Professional, 1969-2009, n.d., Box 2-3 This series is composed of published articles, book reviews, monograph chapters and Patrick s three monographs, Liberating Conscience, Women, Conscience, and the Creative Process, and Conscience and Calling. There are also awards received by Patrick, as well as materials for seminars, workshops, and conferences attended by Patrick. A small amount of information about Patrick from excerpts in publications and programs by Carleton College and the Divinity School of University of Chicago is also included. Subseries 2A: Activities, 1969-2009, Box 2 The Conferences/Seminars subseries includes material from various conferences, seminars, and workshops Dr. Patrick either attended or contributed to. Items include administrative documents, such as notes, minutes, and correspondence, as well as lectures and summaries. Subseries 2B: Publications, 1974-2015, n.d., Box 2-3 This subseries contains published materials written by or in reference to Dr. Patrick. The vast majority of the items are either monographs, chapters from monographs, journal articles, or book reviews (two of which are reviews of a group of publications). The contents are all paper, with much of the material discussing women, feminism, theology, ethics, and literature. Patrick pg.2

Series 3: Audiovisual, 1978-2009, n.d., Box 4 Series 3 is separated by material. It contains two audio cassettes of presentations by Dr. Patrick, two computer disks with files on Liberating Conscience, and a video disc of Dr. Patrick s Honors Convocation Speech given at Carleton College. Also included is a VHS tape (and DVD copy) of testimony given by women for a committee of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops in 1985, on The Role of Women in Church and Society, featuring brief presentations by Patrick and her 16- year-old niece Jane Varner, on women and church structures.
