Dear Parents and Teachers, READ-A-THON For the last 3 years I have had the privilege of running the Cheder Chabad Girls library. From our humble beginnings with 2 sparsely filled bookcases, to our current 4 full bookcases (we added one recently!), the library is a place for students to discover and maintain their love for reading. This is done in a convenient setting no driving to libraries and most importantly, Al Taharas Hakodesh. As the number of library patrons and the students themselves grow, my greatest challenge is to try and keep up with their appetite for books. Baruch Hashem, thanks to the many generous donations of books, I have thus far managed to keep up with the demands. In order to keep the momentum going I am launching a Cheder Chabad read-a-thon! I will ask students to choose books that they enjoy reading. I would like them to find sponsors that will donate money for a set amount of time they will spend reading, or per book they read. Each parent can set an amount of time that is appropriate for their child. The money raised will then go to the library to buy more books. The book-a-thon will run for one month, from Tuesday, February 11-11 Adar I Tuesday, March 11, 9 Adar II. Please encourage your children and help them participate. We can all benefit from growing the library. Thank you, Zeesy Grossbaum Zeesy@BCFriendship.com 201-262-7172

Chapter 8 Just on time As the carriage pulled up at the Mendes house the inquisitor could barely make out the back of another carriage that was just disappearing around the corner. Antonio helped him out of the carriage and he walked with confident strides to the Mendes door. But as he approached the house something seemed wrong. The house was too dark. He remembered the wagon and a dark sense of foreboding invaded him. "Antonio!" he nearly shouted from the door of the Mendes house, "Head westward towards the port! If the wagon I saw was the Mendes family, then most likely they would head there." Antonio whipped the horses, but unfortunately for the inquisitor, a little too quickly. He had left before his master had even boarded the wagon. The inquisitor ran after the wagon, but wasn't used to such exercise and had to stop by the edge of the road to rest. By now Antonio had long realized that his master wasn't on the carriage, but was afraid of the inquisitor s wrath. He decided it would be more worthwhile to go on, leaving the poor inquisitor to manage on his own. By that time The Eagle was already making its way deep into the sea. It was three days already, and Carolina was bored. Wherever she looked, all she could see was the endless black, churning water. As she walked aimlessly along the deck, she wondered what she could do with her long hours. She bumped in to a young man. Pardon me said Carolina quickly, and hurried away. As Carolina walked away, she gave one last glance behind her. Wasn t that the man she had seen boarding the ship along with the older woman? Partly from curiosity and mostly from lack of anything better to do, she found herself following the man. The young man walked in to his cabin and closed the door behind him. But before he did, Carolina got a quick view of the room. The room consisted of a closet, a night table and two beds. One of the beds was empty, but the other was occupied by a woman of around fifty years. Carolina could tell right away that she was seriously ill. Her pale face along with the black circles under her eyes told it all. Carolina hesitated a moment and then knocked on the door. Please excuse me, she said to the young man. My father is a well-known physician, maybe he can help you. Thank you so much the young man answered, as Carolina ran to get her father.
