From the Pastor s Desk Christmas 2016 New Year 2017 Dear St. Veronica Parishioners, Christmas is beautiful: Christmas waves a magic wand over the world, and behold, everything is softer and more beautiful, says Norman Vincent Peale. How true! It s the most beautiful time of the year. Do you know why we never get tired of Christmas? The answer is simple: Christmas is beautiful. The whole world is enchanted by its beauty. That s why poets, playwrights, singers, and painters go wild over the theme of the holy Baby born in a manger surrounded by his parents, shepherds, the wise men, and even animals. Christmas happens in us, our families, and towns: Have you noticed that many painters place a modern city or town in the background of the manger? It is to show that the birth of Christ takes place now in our lives, our cities and towns. W. T. Ellis says, It is Christmas in the heart that puts Christmas in the air. The magic of Christmas---the mystery and majesty of God becoming one with us---can transform us, which in turn can help transform families, communities, and the world. Just imagine the revolution of peace, love, and justice that Christmas can bring about! Christmas at St. Veronica Parish: We are a community of believers centered on Jesus Christ. In all that we do in our parish, we strive to have the mind and heart of Jesus. Aided by Catholic traditions and rituals, we learn to think and feel like Jesus, to love God and others. Let us, as a parish community, draw closer to Jesus this Christmas. He is ready to be born in our parish all over again. Our acceptance of Jesus birth in our community would concretely mean that we get together to pray, love, educate, share, and serve one another. It is faith in Jesus Christ that impels us to be the best we can be as human beings and Christians. Thank You: For celebrating throughout the year our faith at the Eucharistic table and through other sacraments, for hearing God s Word, for the spirit of stewardship expressed in all your service and volunteering, your kindnesses and collaboration, and the generous donations to make our parish ministries and projects solid and successful. Thank you in particular for your current support for Repair My Church (RMC) project, which we hope to complete in the next few months. Merry Christmas! Happy New Year! Your Friend and Pastor, Father Charles Puthota

The Crab Feed is Back! The Annual St. Veronica Men s Club Crab Feed will be Saturday, January 28, 2017, in the Parish Center. Mark your calendars now and keep an eye on the bulletin in early January for the reservation flyer. Reflecting on the Word The Nativity of the Lord Christmas celebrates the light of God s Wordmade-flesh. Light comes in many forms. Some light is direct. Others are a mere reflection of another source. A candle s glow, highway lights, motion detectors, and lamps in our homes lessen darkness, offer comfort, provide guidance, calm fears, and help us see. Lights in church tell us God is here. Jesus, the Word, is the light that no darkness can overcome; but at times it seems as though darkness is overcoming the light. While these words on this page were being written, a series of terrorist attacks changed the lives of many and more senseless shootings took place in our cities. News reports often pay more attention to darkness than the lights of people who hold a dying stranger, welcome others into their homes, and protest the violence. These sisters and brothers testify to the power of light, like John the Baptist. They help us see glimpses of Godwith-us. Their actions announce glad tidings and bear the good news that the light of Christ is stronger. Small deeds speak loudly. Our words and deeds give birth to Jesus each day. They testify that the seemingly impossible can happen, that is, God s light grows stronger when our actions and presence reflect that God is here. Celebrate Christmas as people of hope who give praise and thanks for Jesus Christ. Restore peace by offering comfort and hope in actions that make God s glory known. Let the light of our lives match the lights that decorate our trees and homes to lessen darkness, offer comfort, give guidance, calm fears, and help all see that God is here. That s how all the ends of the earth can see the saving power of God, even where darkness seems stronger. For Prayerful Consideration & Discussion When have you experienced the Light of Christ as stronger than darkness in your life? What is one way that you can testify to the power of the Christ-light this Christmas? - Living the Word Pray for our Beloved Deceased In your prayers this week, please remember the repose of the souls of our deceased parishioners, especially: Arlene A.
