John stepped aside so the true Light of the world could be recognized and followed. We must bring the light of the Christ who dwells within us to all the dark recesses of our world. At the same time we, like John, must step aside so that the Light might shine. John's life and mission was to point to Jesus as the Savior of the world. Our life and mission is to do the same. We don't have to look far for darkness in either the world or in our own lives. It lurks as sin and despair, doubt and insecurity, failure and wrongly directed ambition. As the body of Christ, we are to bring light to this darkness. The challenge of this solemnity is to have the courage to announce the presence of Christ, not simply in words, but also in deeds. Confirmation Classes: 650-588-1455 I will bring light to darkness today by... Parish Office email: churchoffice@stveronicassf.com

Welcome Newly Registered Parishioners! Our parish continues to be blessed and enriched by the presence of new parishioners: Don, Lauralynne & Jarel Cristobal May St. Veronica Church offer you a place where you can bring your sorrow and joys, your pain and triumphs and peace for your soul. We welcome you with open arms and hearts! Peter s Pence Collection Next week our diocese will take up the Peter s Pence Collection, which provides the Holy Father with the Funds he needs to carry out his most important charitable works. The proceeds benefit the most disadvantaged: victims of war, oppression, and natural disasters. Through your generosity, we can cast the peace of Christ upon the world. Last year, Pope Benedict XVI shared that it was necessary above all that every person be motivated by the authentic spirit of peace, to be implored ever anew in prayer and to be lived in daily relations in every environment (Homily, Vatican Basilica, January 1, 2011). The Peter s Pence Collection gives us a chance to unite in solidarity with the Holy Father and the faithful worldwide. Please be generous in the Collection and help cast the peace of Christ upon the World. Thank you for supporting St. Veronica Parish and its works. From the Pastor's Desk Dear St. Veronica Parishioners, Welcome Mass & Reception for the Newly- Registered Parishioners: This Sunday June 24 th at the 9:30 a.m. Mass, we shall welcome the recent newlyregistered parishioners of St. Veronica Parish. After the Mass, at the hospitality in the Parish Center, there will be a special welcome for them. Representatives from different parish ministries wearing Ask Me About... tags will provide the new and current parishioners with the information they may seek about how they could be involved in various ministries and volunteer their time and talents. St. Veronica is a large-sized parish boasting a big property. More important, we have big numbers--- nearly 2300 families. We have a Catholic school of over 300 children and a Faith Formation Program of nearly 350 children. There are various ministries and different organizations. All these speak of the vitality of our parish community. We welcome the newly registered parishioners with open arms to all the excitement of our parish activities. They are one with the body of Christ in our parish. We have different gifts and talents, different roles and responsibilities, but we are all united in Christ who through His Spirit anoints and unites us. That is the only way we can become the effective and authentic community of Christ, capable of belonging to the Kingdom of God. Invitation to Everyone to be Registered! As we observe this special occasion for the newly registered members of the parish, I would like to invite everyone to be registered at our parish. Any organization, any institution, worth its salt, wants to know who the members are. It s all the more true for our parish community. We are not ANY organization! We are a faith community! We are believers! We are disciples and apostles of Christ! Please stand up and be counted! In case you haven t thought about it so far, please register yourselves with the parish office! The rest of us want to know who you are so we can get to know you and serve you better. How can we love one another if we don t even know each other? You are invited to share your time, talent, and treasure with St. Veronica Parish Community. Let s keep strengthening it, cherishing it, treasuring it, taking care of it, supporting it! Our parish community deserves the best of what everyone can offer because Christ himself is the center of this community. Stewardship Committee Next Meeting: On June 28 th the committee will meet along with the finance committee and the three chair-persons of Capital Campaign: Tammi Grigg, Sharon Oosterman, and Terri Ciardella. We will discuss the various options and possibilities of making our Capital Campaign a success. I will keep sharing with you through this column on the latest developments. I seek your good will and collaboration. Come, let s work together and provide for the basic needs and necessities of our property and community! St. Veronica Book Club: On June 18 th we met to share ideas on the book I Call You Friends. Our next meeting, after a break, will be on Monday, August 27 th at 7:00 p.m. The book we ll read for that meeting is: The Way to Love: the Last Meditations of Anthony de Mello. It s a little book you can buy for less than $7.00, but the insights it contains are priceless. Even those who don t belong to the book club can read this book on your own. You ll then be with the book club in spirit! Word of God: This Sunday we celebrate the Solemnity of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist. What can we take away from this celebration? Can we prepare the way for Christ as the Baptist did? He rejoiced at the presence of the Lord and leaped for joy. Are our lives governed by a deep sense of the joy of the Lord? Can we call the world to repent and change our ways and fall in line with God s ways? We need, like the Baptist, to seek truth and even be ready to pay the price for it. We need to give hope, as he did, to the world that the crooked paths will be made straight. A Catholic Joke: A little boy was listening to a long and boring sermon in church. Suddenly his eye caught the red sanctuary lamp. Tugging his father's sleeve, he said, Daddy, when the light turns green, can we go? Your Friend & Pastor, Father Charles Puthota

What's in a Name? Names have special meanings. In our families, some people are named after parents or other relatives and ancestors. Sometimes peoples' names are symbolic, suggesting something unique about the person or recalling an event or experience related to that person's birth. In this Sunday's Gospel, we learn that Elizabeth gives her son the name John, which means God has been gracious. This name sets John apart in a special way: it was normally the father's responsibility to name a child, and the name was usually a family name. The unusual nature of John's naming suggests to everyone that this is a special child. Last week s Solution - Like a Mustard Seed - Mark 4:26-34 Spend some time as a family focusing on one another's names as well as on the names of other relatives. Point out the significance of each name and how the naming took place. Talk about how important names are and how we are all called to honor the name of God. PRAYER OF THE WEEK June 24, 2012, The Nativity of Saint John the Baptist At the Mass during the Day O God, who raised up Saint John the Baptist to make ready a nation fit for Christ the Lord, give your people, we pray, the grace of spiritual joys and direct the hearts of all the faithful into the way of salvation and peace. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Reflection question: What can I do this week to make the world a little more ready to receive Christ the Lord? The fourteen days from June 21 the vigil of the Feasts of St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More to July 4, Independence Day, are dedicated to this fortnight for freedom a great hymn of prayer for our country. Our liturgical calendar celebrates a series of great martyrs who remained faithful in the face of persecution by political power St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More, St. John the Baptist, SS. Peter and Paul, and the First Martyrs of the Church of Rome. Culminating on Independence Day, this special period of prayer, study, catechesis, and public action will emphasize both our Christian and American heritage of liberty. Prayer for the Protection of Religious Liberty O God our Creator, Through the power and working of your Holy Spirit, you call us to live out our faith in the midst of the world, bringing the light and the saving truth of the Gospel to every corner of society. We ask you to bless us in our vigilance for the gift of religious liberty. Give us the strength of mind and heart to readily defend our freedoms when they are threatened; give us courage in making our voices heard on behalf of the rights of your Church and the freedom of conscience of all people of faith. Grant, we pray, O heavenly Father, a clear and united voice to all your sons and daughters gathered in your Church in this decisive hour in the history of our nation, so that, with every trial withstood and every danger overcome for the sake of our children, our grandchildren, and all who come after us this great land will always be "one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." We ask this through Christ our Lord, Amen.
