Jesus as the King who loves THE WELCOME WELCOME Welcome each child as they arrive. Hello. I m glad you are here! Come open the Treasure Chest to find today s treasure. Child unlocks the Treasure Chest to receive a stamp or sticker of food. Today, we will hear how Jesus gave special food to His friends to help them remember Him. Teacher s Note: These activity centers are designed to reinforce the lesson through hands-on learning experiences either individually or in small groups with the guidance of the teacher. Choose the Bible Activity Centers that best suit the children in your class. Set up the activity centers around the room before children arrive. Allow children to move freely among them. COLORING CENTER: THE LAST SUPPER SUPPLIES Coloring pages of Jesus and the Last Supper, (2) food stickers per child, crayons or markers DO Give each child two food stickers to put on the plates on their coloring pages. Older children can be encouraged to draw their favorite foods on the plates. TALK ABOUT Today, we will hear about a special meal Jesus ate with His friends. It was the last meal they would eat together. I wonder what they ate for supper. If you could eat anything, what would you like to eat? (Children respond.) PLAY-DOUGH CENTER: THE BREAD AND THE CUP SUPPLIES Play-dough, cookie cutters, play-dough tools DO Children play with the play-dough as they share what they remember about Jesus. Encourage children to make bread and a cup of juice with the play-dough. TALK ABOUT Jesus gave His friends a special way to remember Him. At supper, they shared bread and juice. He told His friends to remember Him when they shared bread and juice together. Let s make a cup and a piece of bread out of our play-dough. While we are making bread and a cup, let s tell each other what we remember about Jesus. Help the children to remember and share Bible stories about Jesus or what they know about Jesus: Jesus loves us, Jesus is always with us, Jesus loves to spend time with us, etc. Page 3 of 11

SUPPLIES Three beanbags, basket, on the side of the basket tape a heart with a picture of Jesus DO Children take turns tossing beanbags into the basket as they talk about loving Jesus. TALK ABOUT Remembering Jesus and all He has done for us is a great way to show we love Him. Every time you get the beanbag into the basket, let s cheer for Jesus and shout We love Jesus! DRAMATIC PLAY CENTER: A SHARED MEAL SUPPLIES Dishes, cups, napkins, play food DO Children set the table and pretend to share a meal together. TALK ABOUT In our story today, Jesus ate a special meal with His friends. Let s set the table for a special meal with our friends here at church. Set the table and pretend to have a meal together. I enjoy sharing a special meal with my friends and family. Who are your favorite people to share a meal with? (Children respond.) PREPARE FOR WORSHIP It s time for Praise Time. Today, we will learn Jesus made a special way for us to remember Him because He loves us. It is good to remember His great love for us. Sing: I Will Remember. Jesus shares the Last Supper THE WORD Supplies: Teacher s Bible with bookmark at Luke 22:19a, picture of the Bible story, bag, three items that young children can easily associate with a holiday or other special event (i.e. Christmas decoration, birthday candle or hat, Easter egg), cup, slice of bread in a baggie Before we begin our Bible Time, let s say our Classroom Promise with the motions. With my eyes on my teacher; My mouth quiet as can be, I will listen to hear, How God loves you and me. Point to eyes. Place index finger over mouth as quiet sign. Cup hand around ear. Hug self, point to others, and then self. Let s reach deep in our pockets and pull out our listening ears. Reach in your pocket and cup your hands behind your ears as if listening. Place the three holiday items, the bread, and the cup in the bag. I have some special items with me today. Let s see if you can tell me what they remind you of. Pull the first holiday item out of the bag. What special time does this remind you of? (Children respond.) Very good. Pull the second holiday item out of the bag. How about this? What does it remind you of? (Children respond.) Share a memory you have about that holiday or special event. Pull the third holiday item out of the bag. What special time does this remind you of? (Children respond.) Great job! I love to remember special times I ve shared with family and friends. Today, we will hear how Jesus shared a special time with His friends. Remove the bread and cup from the bag. Jesus used bread and a cup to help them remember Him and the special time they had together. Let s find out how. Handle the Bible as a special treasure, leaving it open to Luke 22:19a. WATCH THE WORD: LUKE 22:14, 19-20 Read the story below or retell the passage in your own words. To illustrate the story, show a picture of the Bible story from a children s Bible, the coloring page, or other source. Jesus planned a special meal To have with all His friends. He knew that they would need a way To always remember Him. He gave bread to each of them. He blessed it and said, Take and eat. And every time you eat this bread, Do it to remember Me. He took the cup and blessed it. He said, Take and drink it up. Do this to remember Me Each time you drink this cup. Who should we remember when we eat bread and drink from the cup? (Jesus.) Remembering Jesus THE WAY Teacher Tip: Craft and games can be presented at the same time in different areas or one at a time depending on class size and teaching style. CRAFT: THE LAST SUPPER NECKLACE Purpose: To know Jesus had supper with His friends. Supplies: Sturdy white paper, string or yarn, brown or purple crayons or markers, optional: glue and purple tissue paper Prepare: 1. Cut a cup shape and a loaf of bread shape from sturdy, white paper. 2. On one side of cup shape, print: The Last Supper Luke 22:14, 19-20 3. On one side of bread shape, print: Remember the Lord. 4. Punch a hole in the top of the cup shape and bread shape. 5. Cut a 36-inch length of string or yarn. 6. Optional: Cut 1-inch pieces of purple tissue paper. Adaptation for Ages 2-3: This craft has been adapted from the curriculum for ages 4-5. 1. Color bread with brown crayons or markers. 2. Color cup with purple crayons or markers (for grape juice). 3. Optional: Glue small pieces of purple tissue paper onto cup. 4. Thread string or yarn through both hole punches. 5. Knot the string or yarn to make a necklace. Craft Discussion: Do you help your family get ready for supper? What kind of things do you do to help? (Set the table, clean the dishes, etc.) Who did Jesus have supper with? (His friends.) This was Jesus last supper with His friends. Jesus gave His friends a way to remember Him. What was it? (The bread and cup.) Hold up your bread and cup. When you eat bread and drink juice, you can think about Jesus, too! Page 7 of 11

THE WAY continued GAME: I REMEMBER JESUS! Purpose: For children to be reminded to remember Jesus. Supplies: Praise music about Jesus Jesus says it s good to remember Him. Let s play a game. I m going to play a song about Jesus. When you hear the music, I want you to dance and move around. When the music stops, I want everyone to freeze and say, I remember Jesus! 1. Play praise music about Jesus. 2. Periodically stop the music and lead the children in shouting, I remember Jesus! 3. Play may continue for as long as you like. GAME: SHARING A MEAL Purpose: This game will help children learn and experience the Bible Story as they prepare for their snack. Supplies: Bread, drink, tablecloths, plates, napkins, cups Jesus had supper with His friends. Let s pretend we are getting ready for supper with Jesus and His friends. Can you help me get ready? 1. Assign children to spread tablecloths on the tables. 2. Assign several more children to set out plates, napkins, and cups for each child at the table. 3. Ask all the children to sit down at the table. 4. Place a piece of bread on each plate. 5. Pour the juice. 6. Proceed with the Snack Time activity. 7. THE WAY continued SNACK: SHARING A MEAL Purpose: Children will enjoy bread and drink as they discuss the Last Supper. Snack Suggestion: Bread, drink 1. Serve snack and drink. 2. Today, we are sitting around the table together, just like Jesus did when He had supper with His friends! What do you like about sharing a meal with your family? (Children respond.) Jesus gave His friends a special way to remember Him. Who are we supposed to remember each time we have the bread and the cup? (Jesus.) When only 5 minutes remain, begin this segment. FINAL FIVE MINUTES BIBLE MEMORY VERSE Gather children in a circle sitting or standing and practice the words and motions. Supplies: Large heart-shaped item, Unit 3 Bible Memory Verse Song We Love As we say our new Bible Memory Verse, we are going to pass the heart around the circle. We will be sharing Jesus love with each other. 1. Stand in the circle with the children. 2. Say the Bible Memory Verse, pausing after each phrase for children to repeat. 3. When the music starts, hug as many as you can before the music stops. 1. Start the music. 2. Children hug as many other children as they can before the music stops. 3. Stop the music. 4. Play again, as time allows. STORY TIME Gather the children and read a favorite story. This can be a Bible Story, a chapter from The Adventures of Delbert & Lello, or a story about family mealtimes or a favorite story about Jesus.
