Congratulations to the Lakeside Congregation kehillah on its 60 th Anniversary!
When our eldest child was ready for Sunday School, Arnie and I explored the local classical reform congregations that were in or near Glencoe. I had assumed we would join North Shore Congregation Israel, where Arnie had been a member. However, after attending several services, we were disappointed in the direction it seemed to be heading and started looking around for an alternative. Several friends, including Harry and Ellie Levi and G.F. and Julie Baer, expressed the same concern and so we began a search for others who might be interested in starting a Sunday School. When Buddy and Lil Coleman joined our group, it really picked up steam Buddy was the chairman of the American Council for Judaism and all of us were sympathetic. We used various public schools as classrooms and many of us became volunteer teachers. It didn't take long for us to realize that we wanted more and we put together a statement of principles, sought members and hired a rabbi. Lakeside was on its way.
My family has been a part of the Lakeside family since 1955. We have been involved in many wonderful ways during that time. Lakeside has been and is a very important part of my family and always will be. Herbert W. and Dorothy Ann G. Kirchheimer were founding members of Lakeside s school for Judaism and also the congregation in 1955. Herb was president of the congregation. He was also very involved in expanding the music within the congregation. The music and choir fund is named in my parents memory. Lynn Kirchheimer Mickovic, my sister, assisted in the religious school while she was in high school. While she was in college, she was a teacher in the religious school for a year or two. Rabbi Bruce Freyer, one of our former Rabbi s, married her and her husband, Bob. I was confirmed at Lakeside. It was the largest confirmation class at the temple. In May of 2008, I was a part of the first adult B nai Mitzvah class. I have been involved in many other ways over the years at Lakeside. My children, Herbert and Dorothy-Ann were named, consecrated, Bar and Bat Mitzvah, and confirmed at Lakeside. My daughter and I were also aides in the religious school after confirmation. To say that Lakeside is a major part of our lives would be a major understatement. Lakeside is a wonderful spiritual home and also a special place with many wonderful friends. Mazel Tov and here s to another 60 wonderful years!!!
With love, Lynda and Bernie Maram and Family
