Kindergarten-2nd January 26-27, 2013 Jesus Chooses Disciples Matthew 4:18-22, Luke 5:27-32, and Luke 6:12-16 Jesus disciples put Jesus first! Hang out with kids (10 minutes) Large Group (30 minutes) Small Group (20 minutes) Video and song review (10 minutes) Remind parents that we want their kids in Kids Club next weekend and that it s great time for their kids to bring some friends! Also, tell kids to share why they have medals today: We talked about how the disciples made Jesus first place in their lives. Next week is Super Bowl weekend! This could be a great opportunity for kids to bring their friends! Challenge kids to invite somebody. Large group is all about how Jesus disciples left everything in their lives to follow Jesus. That s because Jesus was number one!

Goal: To help kids understand what it looks like to put Jesus first Why? The disciples left jobs, boats, and their dad to follow Jesus. It ll look different for kids. We want to help put it in a context they ll understand. Tip: When kids first hear about the sacrifice involved in putting Jesus first, they might not all want to do it. That s okay. For the activity, kids can draw a picture of the disciples putting Jesus first. QUESTIONS CONNECT 1. Everybody share your name and the favorite toy you thought of in large group, the one you yelled out (or whispered) at the same time as everyone else. REVIEW 2. In today s story, what were Simon and Andrew and James and John doing when Jesus called to them from along the Sea of Galilee? (fishing) 3. Simon and Andrew worked as fisherman. But when Jesus called, what did they leave? (Their job!) 4. James and John had a boat and they were with their dad. But when Jesus called, what did they leave? (their boat and their dad) 5. Do you have to be rich or popular or good-looking to be Jesus disciple? (No way!) 6. What is the ONE thing you have to do to be Jesus disciple? (put (continue to next page) ACTIVITY SAY: It can be really hard to remember to make Jesus first place in our lives, even when we love him a lot! Today, we re going to make 1 st place medals to remind us that the disciples put Jesus FIRST and we can too! DO: Give each kid a medal and 2 paper inserts (or a black circle & scratch off tool depending on which type your room has). Tell them to design the inserts however they want! They can be creative. But for the kids who aren t quite sure what to draw, here are some ideas: A picture of one of Jesus disciples, putting Jesus first (leaving a boat or a job) A picture of themselves putting Jesus first this week (obeying their parents when they don t feel like it or helping a friend instead of playing with their toys) Write the word Jesus and decorate it. *As kids finish, help them put the insert in the medal. Also, ask them to share their ideas with the other kids.

2 QUESTIONS Jesus first in your life!) 7. Why do you think the disciples were able to make Jesus first place? (They wanted to follow Him even more than they wanted to do their jobs or anything else, and they really loved him more than anything!) RELATE 8. Think of the favorite toy that you shared with us in the beginning-or your favorite thing to do. Would you be willing to leave that toy or activity to follow Jesus, like the disciples? Why or why not? (don t force kids to respond to this aloud) 9. What are some other ways we can put Jesus first, like the 12 disciples did? (brainstorm together here are some ideas to get you started: a. Help your mom before you play video games b. Give one of your toys to a friend or kid who doesn t have much c. Play a game your friend wants to play, even if you don t like that game very much) ACTIVITY

1 The story of when Jesus chooses his disciples can be confusing. Not only are there a lot of names, but some of the disciples are given new names. Know the lesson well beforehand so you can tell the story clearly. But don t focus on their names: focus on their actions. They all put Jesus first in their lives! Today, we re repeating a phrase and pairing it with a motion. Really emphasize that with kids it ll help them remember it longer! WELCOME AND IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT Welcome to Kids Club, friends! Before we get started today, I have another IMPORTANT announcement. Super Bowl is NEXT WEEK and we are going to have FUN in Kids Club!! Some of you have already seen the trailer, but let s watch it again! Video: Super Bowl Trailer Kids Club next week is going to be pretty great! You don t want to miss it! REVIEW This week, we re going to learn about some people who followed Jesus. But first, does anybody remember the name of the guy who prepared people to follow Jesus by baptizing them? We call him the Baptist. What s his first name? (Let kids say: John) Yes, John the Baptist! He had a special part in God s Story. But remember, we have a special part in God s Story too! We can ALL be good examples and teach others to follow Jesus by acting like Jesus! How can we be good examples? By acting like.? (Let kids say Jesus!) INTRO: DISCIPLES There s a special name for people who follow Jesus. Does anybody have any guesses? (Let kids respond.) People who follow Jesus are called disciples. Can you guys say disciples? (Let kids respond). A little louder! (Let kids yell: disciples.) Great job! Before we hear today s story, I want you to answer this question in your head: If Jesus was choosing people to follow him, what kind of people would he choose? When you have an answer in you head, give me a thumbs up. (Let kids respond.) Now, turn and tell one friend what kind of disciple you think Jesus would choose to follow him.

Today, we re going to talk about which people Jesus chose which twelve disciples. As you listen, see if you or your friend was right about which people Jesus chose. These disciples would act like Jesus, love Jesus, and help Jesus no matter what. They put following Jesus first, before anything else they wanted to do! Hold up one finger (let kids respond.) Great job! Now say, They put Jesus first! (Let kids respond.) Awesome! I m going to need you guys to help me tell the story today. Whenever you see someone put Jesus first, put one finger and say, They put Jesus first! Let s practice one more time. (Model and let kids respond.) Okay, let s hear the story. SIMON PETER AND ANDREW LEAVE THEIR WORK (Show picture of fisherman on Sea of Galilee.) One day, Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee. He saw two brothers fishing. That was their job: they were fishermen. Their job was how they made money to eat food every day, buy clothes to wear, and have a house to stay in. Do you think their job was important? (Let kids respond.) Well, here s what Matthew 4:19-20 says: (show slide): Come. Follow me, Jesus said. I will make you fishers of people. At once they left their nets and followed him. They didn t worry at all about leaving their jobs. They followed Jesus right away. Hold up one finger let s get ready to say what they did, just like we practiced (lead kids in saying): They put Jesus first! JAMES AND JOHN LEAVE THEIR FATHER A little ways from there, Jesus saw two other guys fishing with their dad. Their names were James and John. James and John were in a boat with their dad, whose name was Zebedee. But when Jesus called them, guess what they did? Matthew 4:22 says: SLIDE: Right away they left the boat and their father and followed Jesus. Think of you favorite toy. Maybe it s a bike or a doll or video game. Give me a thumbs up when you ve thought of your favorite toy in your head. (Let kids respond.) Okay, at the count of three, shout it out one, two, three! (Let kids shout or whisper if your group is a little rowdy!) Imagine leaving that toy AND your mom or dad or friend to follow Jesus. You re making Jesus first, more important to you than anything else! (Put up one finger.) Hey, that means James and John (guide kids to join you): Put Jesus first! LEVI LEAVES WORK (Show picture of tax collector.) Later, Jesus saw another guy named Levi. We also know him as Matthew. Matthew was working his job when Jesus said, Follow me. What do you guys think Matthew did? (Let kids respond by putting up one finger and saying): He put Jesus first! Matthew left his job right away to follow Jesus!

JESUS CHOOSES REGULAR PEOPLE (Show picture of 12 guys.) Jesus chose 12 people to follow him Their names were Peter, James, John, Matthew, Andrew, Thomas, Bartholomew, James, Philip, Simon, Thaddeus, and Judas! But you don t need to remember all those names. What you DO need to know is what these guys were like. When you turned and told a friend what kinds of disciples you thought Jesus would choose, did anybody say poor, UNpopular, or regular? Raise your hand if you did. (Let kids respond.) If you did, you were right! Jesus didn t choose guys who were all rich or popular or good-looking. The fishermen were probably poor. Fisherman didn t make much money. Matthew was tax collector, which means people hated him! These men weren t important. Some of them probably weren t very smart. These guys did ONE thing (lift one finger) that mattered to Jesus. Can you guess what it is? (Let kids say): They put Jesus first! WE CAN BE DISCIPLES BY PUTTING JESUS FIRST Jesus had 12 disciples, but he wants ALL of us to be his disciples. It doesn t matter if you re tall or short, rich or poor, a girl or a boy. It doesn t matter if you live in a house or an apartment. It doesn t matter which school you go to or what kinds of clothes you wear or even if you ve done bad things. Jesus wants all of us to follow him. And we all can! What s the one thing all the disciples did? (Let kids respond: They put Jesus first!) That s right! We re going to talk some more about what it looks like to put Jesus first in small group today. But first, let s tell Jesus we love him by worshiping him! WORSHIP Today, we re going to sing about how Jesus loves us no matter what because it reminds us that we can be his disciples no matter what! Then we ll sing a song to remind us that we really can act like Jesus! Music Video: Jesus Loves Me Worship Video: Grow Up Like Jesus PRAY Can somebody pray for us and thank Jesus that ANY of us can follow him?

Jesus didn t choose the smartest or most important people, but all 12 had one thing in common: they left everything to follow Jesus and put him first. We made first place medals to remind us that Jesus wants to be first place in our lives too. You can read today s story together in Matthew 4:18-22, Luke 5:27-32, and Luke 6:12-16.
