An Introduction and Examination of Atheism Psalm 14:1-2

For those of us who can't readily accept the God formula, the big answers don't remain stone-written. We are pliable. Love need not be a command nor faith a dictum. I am my own god. ~ Charles Bukowski

Atheism is the belief that there is no God. It has been affirmed, proclaimed, heralded and defended even before Christianity. The Term ATHEIST comes from the combination of two Greek components: a meaning No, Not, or Without

When this is combined with the Greek word Theos or God what we literally have is No God, Not God, or Without God. We see Paul making reference to Atheism and using the Greek Atheos in his letter to the Church as Ephesus:

That at that time you were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. ~ Ephesians 2:12

The term Atheist is sometimes employed and used in place of other terms. Naturally there is some confusion surrounding this word and its use. Therefore, it is necessary that we define some terms as we undertake this study to help us avoid any confusion in the meaning:

Agnostic A Person who does not have a definite belief one way or the other about whether God exists or not. This person proclaims, I can t know if God exists and neither can you! This position of course makes a knowledge claim of knowing that one cannot know!

Deist A Person who believes in a Creator but denies that this creator is present or active today, nor does this Creator interfere with the laws of the Universe. The Deist essentially says, I believe in my own kind of God, just not the God of the Bible.

Theist - A belief in the existence of one God viewed as the creative source of the human race and the world who transcends yet is immanent in the world. This sounds a little closer to Christianity, but even the Theist may not believe in or accept the God of the Bible i.e. Islam.

Atheism A disbelief or lack of belief in the existence of God or gods. The atheist says there is no God. However, the very statement can never be proven since to be able to affirm that statement the atheist would have had to been present at Creation, and been in all places at all times to know that God was not present or active. The burden of proof is forever on the Atheist.

A Fool s Religion?

Atheism is often called The Fools Religion. This is not meant to be an attack or be mean. It is an affirmation of a sad and empty reality facing the atheist. This is affirmed by David as he wrote:

The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good. ~ Psalm 14:1

Remember Atheism does not make a supreme Creator its God. It makes the individual, the body of all those who deny the existence of God individual gods. When the Bible refers to these people as fools it is not meant to be a derogatory name calling insult.

This is the characterization of the position that there is no God. The Hebrew word for fool NABAL literally means one who is spiritually senseless, lacking moral depravity, spiritual irresponsibility, and social insensitivity.

For the foolish person will speak foolishness, And his heart will work iniquity: To practice ungodliness, To utter error against the LORD, To keep the hungry unsatisfied, And he will cause the drink of the thirsty to fail. ~ Isaiah 32:6

In many cases people are guided by reason as long as it suits their position. When confronted with evidence or arguments most Atheists will wave off the findings or simply discredit the information as garbage. Paul writes about this type of person in his letter to Rome.

For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse. because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened (continued)

Professing to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting undiscerning (Foolish, Without Understanding) untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful. ~ Romans 1:20-24, 28, 31

Today the world and all those who proclaim that God is simply a fairy tale, a tool used to make people conform, a children's story to be outgrown, and a simple explanation for the narrow minded are in the same category 2,000 years later. Professing to be wise they became fools.

For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart. Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, it pleased God through the folly of what we preach to save those who believe (continued)

For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men. ~ 1 Corinthians 1:19-25

Difficult Questions For The Atheist

What Do You Mean By Evil? - The greatest argument in the Atheists arsenal is the supposed problem of Evil which is as follows: 1. If Evil Exists, Then God Does Not Exist. 2. Evil Exists 3. Therefore, God Does Not Exist.

The Burden of proof is on the Atheist to show that Evil means there cannot be a God. The major proof offered is to say How can an all loving, all powerful God exist and allow evil to happen? Yet, even the very premise of the argument acknowledges God.

We ask, What do you mean when you say Evil exists? Well Murder, Rape, molesting a child these things. Is Evil Behavior that which has fallen short of what it ought to be? Yes, clearly! Does this should be behavior really exist or where did it come from? For if that standard does not exist then how could someone be like something that does not exist? Are we not then our own gods?

The standard no matter how far back you trace it or try to get away from it is always God! It may be ignored, but cannot be escaped by the human mind!

God does not take away our free will, he does not make us obey or follow Him. Sometimes innocent people are hurt because the freewill God has given to each of us has been abused. Those who abuse it will have to answer for it.

1. If Evil Exists, Then God Does Not Exist. 2. Evil Exists 3. Therefore, God Does Not Exist. The argument fails with the very first premise. You cannot attribute the existence of evil to the absence of God The Very nature of the cross shows us that!

This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. ~ 1 John 1:5

How Did Life Begin? - Some say from a pool of stagnant water struck by lightning. - Some say from an asteroid carrying life that struck the earth. - Many will say We don t know However The Bible states:

Then the LORD God formed man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature. Genesis 2:7

What is our purpose here? - It is commonly thought among Atheists that since life on earth was a great accident that we as people have a meaningless existence. - That is truly one of the most saddest and misguided statements ever made.

Our Purpose is to Glorify God in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. ~ 1 Peter 4:11

So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. ~ 1 Corinthians 10:31

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. ~ John 10:10

But these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. John 20:31

What Happens To You When You Die? - The Atheist answer is that you cease to exist. - You are placed in the ground or wherever and are simply no more. - There is nothing after this life.

Yet the Bible tells us that we do not cease to exist after death. And he said to him, Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise. ~ Luke 23:43

For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil. ~ 2 Corinthians 5:10

And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away. ~ Revelation 21:3-4

Atheism leaves many questions unanswered Wipes away all thought of the possibility of a God that loves His people, communicates with them, and even died fir them. In Atheism one can never find peace, answers, or even know what is true.

Our God He Is Alive Aaron W. Dicus There is beyond the azure blue A God concealed from human sight He tinted skies with heavenly hue And framed the worlds with His great might! There is a God! He Is Alive! In Him We Live and We Survive From dust our God Created Man He Is Our God The Great I Am

God Is Alive, and He Cares For You Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth I Will Never Leave You Nor Forsake You. ~ Psalm 46:10, Hebrews 13:5 As Much Today as He Did at Calvary!
