HOOGLANDSE KERK FESTAL EVENSONG Sunday 12 April 2015 Second Sunday of Easter 1900
LEIDSE CANTORIJ is conducted by HANS BRONS The organ is played by THEO VISSER AD ALBLAS Preacher Jaarthema: De herberg van het hart met gedachten van de moslim-mysticus Mevlana Rumi (1207-1273) We welcome you to this historic church in the heart of Leiden. There has been a place of Christian worship here since 1315. Our aim here is to offer beauty in stone and song to God, the giver of all beauty and goodness. Based on the services held daily in the medieval Church, evensong as arranged in the Book of Common Prayer of the Anglican Church has been sung since the sixteenth century. Much of the service is sung by the choir on our behalf and our participation is by our meditation and our prayers. However, we invite you to join in the singing of the hymns and in those parts of the service which are said together. As words and music come together and enrich each other, our senses and intellects, our hearts and minds are drawn closer to God. ORGAN VOLUNTARY O Filii et Fliliae - Pierre Dandrieu (1664-1733) Please observe silence during the organ voluntary as it is a time of preparation for worship. INTROIT As one who has slept, the Lord has risen, and rising He has saved us. All stand as the Choirs and Ministers enter. John Tavener (1944-2013) PROCESSIONAL HYMN - NEH 112 Choir: All: Jesus lives! Thy terrors now Can no longer, death, appall us; Jesus lives! by this we know Thou, O grave, canst not enthrall us. Alleluya! Jesus lives! Henceforth is death But the gate of life immortal; This shall calm our trembling breath When we pass its gloomy portal. Alleluya! All: Jesus lives! For us he died; Then, alone to Jesus living, Pure in heart may we abide, Glory to our Savior giving. Alleluya! 3
All: All: Jesus lives! Our hearts know well Naught from us his love shall sever; Life, nor death, nor powers of hell Tear us from his keeping ever. Alleluya! Jesus lives! To him the throne Over all the world is given: May we go where he has gone, Rest and reign with him in heaven. Alleluya! All sit. EASTER ANTHEM Christ our passover is sacrificed for us : therefore let us keep the feast. Not with the old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness: but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more : death hath no more dominion over him. For in that he died unto sin once : but in that he liveth he liveth unto God. Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin : but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. Christ is risen from the dead : and become the first-fruits of them that slept. For since by man came death : by man came also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die : even so in Christ shall all be made alive. Glory be to the Father and to the Son : and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be : world without end. Amen. John Scott (b. 1956) 4
OPENING SENTENCES Said by the preacher THE PRECES O Lord, open thou our lips. And our mouth shall shew forth thy praise. O God, make speed to save us. O Lord, make haste to help us. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Praise ye the Lord. The Lord's name be praised. Richard Ayleward (1626-1669) PSALM 114 In exitu Israel When Israel came out of Egypt : and the house of Jacob from among the strange people, Judah was his sanctuary : and Israel his dominion. The sea saw that, and fled : Jordan was driven back. The mountains skipped like rams : and the little hills like young sheep. What aileth thee, O thou sea, that thou fleddest : and thou Jordan, that thou wast driven back? Ye mountains, that ye skipped like rams : and ye little hills, like young sheep? Tremble, thou earth, at the presence of the Lord : at the presence of the God of Jacob; Who turned the hard rock into a standing water : and the flint-stone into a springing well. All stand. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost : As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. All sit. Chant: Tonus Peregrinus 5
THE FIRST LESSON Daniel 3: 19-25 MAGNIFICAT My soul doth magnify the Lord and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me. And holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him throughout all generations. He hath shewed strength with his arm. He hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things. And the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel. As he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever. All stand. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be: world without end. Amen. All sit. St John s Service, Herbert Howells (1892-1983) THE SECOND LESSON Luke 24: 13-16 + 28-31 NUNC DIMITTIS Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace according to thy word. For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; To be a light to lighten the gentiles and to be the glory of thy people Israel. All stand. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be: world without end. Amen. St John s Service, Herbert Howells 6
Preacher: Now let us confess our faith. THE APOSTLES CREED All say: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. HYMN CP 162 Choir: verse 1 and 3; congregation: verse 2, 4, 5 and 6 1. Ye choirs of new Jerusalem, your sweetest notes employ, the paschal victory to hymn in strains of holy joy. 2. How Judah's Lion burst his chains, and crushed the serpent's head; and brought with him, from death's domains the long-imprisoned dead. 3. From hell's devouring jaws the prey alone our leader bore; his ransomed hosts pursue their way where he has gone before. 4. Triumphant in his glory now his sceptre ruleth all; earth, heaven and hell before him bow and at his footstool fall. 7
5. While joyful thus his praise we sing, his mercy we implore, into his palace bright to bring and keep us evermore. 6. All glory to the Father be, all glory to the Son, all glory, Holy Ghost to thee, while endless ages run. Alleluia! Amen. All sit. THE SERMON als twee werelden elkaar raken THE LESSER LITANY, THE LORDS PRAYER, AND THE RESPONSES The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. Let us pray. Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen. O Lord, shew thy mercy upon us. And grant us thy salvation. O Lord, save the King. And mercifully hear us when we call upon thee. Endue thy ministers with righteousness. And make thy chosen people joyful. 8
O Lord, save thy people. And bless thine inheritance. Give peace in our time, O Lord. Because there is none other that fighteth for us, but only thou, O God. O God, make clean our hearts within us. And take not thy Holy Spirit from us. COLLECT OF THE DAY Almighty Father, who hast given thine only Son to die for our sins and to rise again for our justification: Grant us so to put away the leaven of malice and wickedness; that we may always serve thee in pureness of living and truth; through the merits of the same thy Son our Lord. Amen. COLLECT FOR PEACE O God, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works do proceed; give unto thy servants that peace which the world cannot give; that both, our hearts may be set to obey thy commandments, and also that by thee, we being defended from the fear of our enemies, may pass our time in rest and quietness; through the merits of Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen. COLLECT FOR AID AGAINST ALL PERILS Lighten our darkness, we beseech thee, O Lord; and by thy great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the love of thy only Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen. Richard Ayleward THE ANTHEM When Israel came out of Egypt and the House of Jacob from out the bonds of a stranger's hand, Judah he made his sanctuary and his dominion Israel, where lay the promised land. Great rivers parted when they saw it, Jordan's great waters fell before it. Mountains of rock skipped forth like the rams, and the little hills leap'd as the lambs, skipped as the little new lambs. Tell it, O 9
sea, what then ailed thee that thou wast driven back? Ye mountain peaks, ye little hill and tree, as the young lambs ye leap's from the earth; O mighty hills what ailed thee? Tremble before the Lord God of Jacob, thou mighty peaks and hills that fear him, tremble before thy King who made the waters from the standing rock, who turned the flint into a flowing stream.
