Page 3 From Deacon Gene Fadness Today s Gospel reading is the beginning of the longest recorded prayer in the gospels, Jesus high priestly prayer. We read only the first 11 verses in today s Gospel reading, but it would be well worth your effort to read this entire prayer, which is the official beginning of Jesus passion. It is given the name priestly prayer because Jesus addresses his Father in a very moving dialogue in which, as Priest, He offers the Father His soon-to-be sacrifice of His passion and death. The priestly prayer consists of three parts. In the first (verses 1-5), Jesus offers up His approaching sacrifice to the Father. In the second part (verses 6-19), He prays for His disciples, whom He is going to send out into the world to proclaim the redemption He is about to accomplish. Finally, in the third part (verses 20-26), He prays for the unity of the universal church and for those who will believe in Him over the course of the centuries, until they achieve full union with Him in heaven. Notice how often the words glory or glorification are used in today s Gospel reading and in our Epistle reading from I Peter. Jesus prays to return to the Father to be in glory with Him, as He was before the foundation of the world. He also brings glory to the Father through his atoning sacrifice on behalf of all humankind. And His disciples, and later, those who would come to believe in His name, will also bring glory to both the Father and the Son through their faith and action as His followers in the world. I used to think this priestly prayer for unity was a prayer primarily for unity in the church, so that it would not be divided into the many denominations we have today. But it goes far deeper than that. It is more a prayer that believers be totally united with the Father and the Son, through the Holy Spirit. It is a prayer that the family of God participates fully in the life of the Trinity. As I wrote last week, the result of the perfect love between the Father and the Son is the person of the Holy Spirit. In this great high priestly prayer, Jesus prays that all disciples will share in His divine life and possess the very same unity that the Father and the Son share. This can be accomplished only by the power of the Holy Spirit, whose coming we celebrate next week on Pentecost Sunday. Su amigo y servidor ~ Padre Jesús Camacho THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD. The Ascension of the Lord is held on the Thursday of the 6th week of Easter. In some dioceses, including the Diocese of Boise, it is transferred to the 7th Sunday of Easter. After the Lord Jesus had fulfilled the redeeming mission entrusted by his Father, he said goodbye to his disciples and ascended to heaven. This event marks the transition between the glory of the Risen Christ and of Christ exalted to be seated at the right side of the Father. It also marks the reality that humanity can enter the kingdom of God as Jesus announced so many times. In this way, the Ascension of the Lord is integrated into the mystery of the Incarnation, which is his defining moment. Jesus returns triumphant, to become the Lord of Heaven and Earth. Your friend and servant ~ Fr. Jesus Camacho
