T&T MISSION: GRACE IN ACTION RESOURCE BUNDLE ACTIVITY INSTRUCTIONS 4.7 LIVING BY GRACE REVIEW: LESSON OPENER (5 MINUTES) OPTION 1: A-MAZE-ING GRACE Notes: WHAT YOU LL NEED: A-Maze-ing Grace handout (Resource Bundle), pens or pencils LEADER PREP: Make copies of the A-Maze-ing Grace handout, one copy per kid. ACTIVITY: STEP 1: Distribute a copy of the A-Maze-ing Grace handout to each kid, along with a pen or a pencil. Give kids two minutes to complete the maze. STEP 2: After two minutes, ask kids to compare their progress with their neighbors. STEP 3: Remind kids that a Christian s life is often like a maze. We might not be sure of which decision to make or where to go. We will have times when we have no trouble getting along with or helping others. But there will also be times in our lives when we are uncertain of our future. We may face hard times and challenges, and we may have difficulty getting along with others. STEP 3: Explain to kids that throughout the maze of life, we have the grace of God to face any situation, whether it is easy and happy or hard and discouraging. And when we rely on the Holy Spirit s help, we will grow closer to God through His grace. STEP 4: Open in prayer, thanking God for His grace. Transition to main lesson.

T&T MISSION: GRACE IN ACTION RESOURCE BUNDLE ACTIVITY INSTRUCTIONS 4.7 LIVING BY GRACE REVIEW: MAIN LESSON (10 MINUTES) OPTION 1: PANEL DISCUSSION WHAT YOU LL NEED: Panel Questions handout (Resource Bundle), Overview of Grace handout (Resource Bundle), Key Terms handout (Resource Bundle), tables, chairs, scissors, plastic cup LEADER PREP: Before T&T, ask six leaders or other adults to be a part of a panel on the subject of grace. Print out seven copies of the Panel Questions handout and six copies of the Overview of Grace handout from the Resource Bundle. Give each panel member a copy of each handout ahead of time. Assign a section to each panel member so that he or she is prepared to answer the questions that correspond to the assigned section. Encourage panel members to be familiar with the information on the Overview of Grace handout and to include that information in their answers. Encourage panel members to keep their answers to under one minute and to consider age appropriateness as they craft their answers for the kids. Cut apart the last copy of the Panel Questions handout and place the sections in a plastic cup. Print out the words Grace, Justification, and Sanctification, along with their definitions from the Key Terms handout in the Resource Bundle. ACTIVITY: STEP 1: Have panel members introduce themselves. Ask a kid to choose a paper from the cup and to read the questions on the paper aloud. Ask the panel member to whom that section was assigned to answer the questions. STEP 2: After each panel member answers his or her questions, review the memory verse corresponding to the questions. After all the questions have been answered, share these key concepts: A. (Display and review the term Grace and its definition from the Key Terms handout.) God s grace to us is the gift of salvation, and this gift is offered to everyone. Christ took the punishment we deserve for our sin, and when we place our faith in what God s Word teaches us about Christ dying for our sin and coming to life again, then we will be saved from the punishment for sin. B. No human can keep all of God s laws perfectly, and our works can t save us, no matter how hard we try. It is through God s grace that we can have salvation. C. (Display and review the term Justification and its definition from the Key Terms handout.) When we are saved, God says we are justified, which means that God judges us as innocent and righteous. When God looks at us, He sees Christ s perfect righteousness that covers all our sin! D. (Display and review the term Sanctification and its definition from the Key Terms handout.) After we are saved, we still need God s grace! We must keep relying on God s grace to help us grow to be more like Jesus and to make good choices to obey, all through the help of the Holy Spirit. When we read the Bible, believe what it says, and pray, the Holy Spirit can work in our hearts to help us want to obey God and those He puts in charge of us. E. When we remember how much God has forgiven us, we should want to forgive others too. The Holy Spirit can help us forgive and change our hearts as we read the Bible and pray. He will help us offer biblical forgiveness to others who have wronged us. F. God gave Paul mercy and grace instead of the punishment he deserved. Paul is a great example of God s grace. If God saved a sinner like Paul, he can save us! G. God gives us the grace to serve those in need. When we remember how much Christ has helped us, we can be more sensitive to others who need help, especially those in our Christian family. STEP 3: Conclude by saying that God s grace is so amazing that we should want to tell everyone about the grace we have received in Christ. This is the most important thing that people could ever hear!

T&T MISSION: GRACE IN ACTION 4.7 LIVING BY GRACE REVIEW PANEL QUESTIONS SECTION 1 WHAT IS GRACE? What is grace? How has God shown you grace in salvation? SECTION 2 GRACE AND LAW When is a time you broke one of God s commands from the Bible? How is the Holy Spirit helping you choose not to sin and be more like Jesus? SECTION 3 GRACE TO OBEY Why is disobeying an authority the same as disobeying God? When is a time you were not submissive to an authority in your life? What happened, and how does (or how could) the Holy Spirit help you be more submissive? SECTION 4 GRACE TO FORGIVE What does it mean to forgive like God wants us to forgive? When is a time you showed biblical forgiveness to someone? Describe what happened. SECTION 5 GRACE AND PAUL How does the apostle Paul s life teach or encourage you? Why is it good for us to study the life of Paul? SECTION 6 GRACE IN ACTION Why is it important to help those in our Christian family? When is a time you saw Christians serving each other well?

T&T MISSION: GRACE IN ACTION 4.7 LIVING BY GRACE REVIEW T&T MISSION: GRACE IN ACTION 4.7 LIVING BY GRACE REVIEW SECTION 1 WHAT IS GRACE? ROMANS 5:1-2 Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through Him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. We can do absolutely nothing to earn or deserve our salvation, but God offers us grace. Grace is giving somebody something good that he or she does not deserve. God s grace to us begins with the gift of salvation. Christ took the punishment we deserve for our sin, and when we have faith that Jesus died for our sin and rose to life again, we will be saved from punishment. When we are saved, God says we are justified, which means that God judges us as innocent and righteous. When God looks at us, He sees Christ s perfect righteousness that covers all our sin! We also have peace with God, which means that we are no longer His enemies who deserve His wrath (very strong anger); instead we are friends of God. SECTION 2 GRACE AND LAW GALATIANS 3:2-3 Let me ask you only this: Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law or by hearing with faith? Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh? No human can keep all of God s laws perfectly. If we break one of God s laws, it s as bad as breaking all of His laws. Our good works can t save us, no matter how hard we try. Jesus is the only one who kept the law perfectly and took our punishment for breaking the law. It is through God s grace, by faith in Christ, that we can have salvation and become righteous, but God continues to give us grace after we trust Christ through the gift of the Holy Spirit. We receive the Holy Spirit when we place our faith in Christ, and the Holy Spirit helps us to choose not to sin and become more like God s Son, Jesus. This is called sanctification. We could never become like Jesus on our own. We need to depend on God s grace to help us! We will never be perfect like Jesus until we get to heaven, but we can let the Holy Spirit work in us by reading God s Word, believing what it says, and praying. PAGE 1 OF 3

T&T MISSION: GRACE IN ACTION 4.7 LIVING BY GRACE REVIEW T&T MISSION: GRACE IN ACTION 4.7 LIVING BY GRACE REVIEW SECTION 3 GRACE TO OBEY TITUS 3:1 Remind them to be submissive to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good work. COLOSSIANS 3:20 Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord. God has chosen the authority figures in our lives. He tells us to be obedient to our authorities; to disobey them is to disobey God. We please and honor the Lord when we are submissive (willing to listen and obey quickly and with a good attitude). We are not perfect in obedience; we must rely on God s grace to help us grow to make good choices to obey, through the help of the Holy Spirit. When we read the Bible and pray, the Holy Spirit can work in our hearts to help us want to obey. SECTION 4 GRACE TO FORGIVE EPHESIANS 4:32 Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you. God forgives all our sins past, present, and future when we trust that Jesus Christ died for us on the cross and rose again. We should forgive others when we remember the way God forgave us. Biblical forgiveness is choosing to love another person even though he sinned, choosing not to punish someone for her sin, being kind and forgiving to people even if they do not deserve it and they never say, I m sorry. Forgiveness is also choosing to forget and stop thinking about a person s sin. Once you forgive, don t remind the person of the bad thing he or she has done to you. When we remember how much God has forgiven us, it is easier to forgive others. The Holy Spirit can help us forgive and change our hearts as we read the Bible and pray. He will help us offer biblical forgiveness to others who have wronged us. PAGE 2 OF 3

T&T MISSION: GRACE IN ACTION 4.7 LIVING BY GRACE REVIEW T&T MISSION: GRACE IN ACTION 4.7 LIVING BY GRACE REVIEW SECTION 5 GRACE AND PAUL 1 TIMOTHY 1:13-14 Though formerly I was a blasphemer, persecutor, and insolent opponent. But I received mercy because I had acted ignorantly in unbelief. And the grace of our Lord overflowed for me with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. At first the apostle Paul was God s enemy. He told people that Jesus was not God s Son, the Savior, and he tried to hurt those who believed in Jesus. He had many believers beaten and put in prison. Paul deserved to be punished for his actions, but God gave Paul mercy and grace instead of the punishment he deserved. One day Jesus spoke to Paul and blinded Paul s eyes so that Paul would know who Jesus was and believe in Him. Paul trusted Christ as His Savior and received Christ s forgiveness and righteousness. After Jesus let Paul see again, Paul stopped hurting believers and started traveling around telling everyone that Jesus is the Son of God. Paul is a great example to us of God s grace. If God saved a sinner like Paul, He can surely save us! Like Paul, we are enemies of God because of our sin. Like Paul, we need to trust that Jesus Christ took the punishment for our sin and gave us His righteousness. God s grace and mercy extends to all those who trust Jesus as Savior. SECTION 6 GRACE IN ACTION GALATIANS 6:9-10 And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith. The memory verses say to do good, especially to those who are part of the household, or family, of faith. All who have trusted Christ are part of one big, Christian family that includes Christians in your church and Christians from all over the world. God wants us to first help those who are in our Christian family, and then help others outside our Christian family. Sometimes we may not feel like helping others, but the Holy Spirit can make us willing and strong to help others. We will receive an eternal reward for doing good when we rely on the Holy Spirit to help us do good to others. PAGE 3 OF 3

T&T MISSION: GRACE IN ACTION RESOURCE BUNDLE ACTIVITY INSTRUCTIONS 4.7 LIVING BY GRACE REVIEW: LESSON OPENER (5 MINUTES) OPTION 2: GIFTS OF GRACE Notes: WHAT YOU LL NEED: Small gift bags or gift card holders, 3 x 5 cards, scissors, markers, stickers or scrapbook embellishments (optional) LEADER PREP: Before T&T, purchase small, inexpensive gift bags or gift card holders, one for each kid. Cut 3 x 5 cards to fit the bags or holders. Write the word GRACE on each card and decorate as desired. Place a prepared card in each bag or holder. STEP 1: Give each kid a gift bag or card holder, but instruct them not to open it until they are instructed to do so. STEP 2: Ask several kids and leaders to briefly share the best birthday or Christmas gifts they received. Encourage them to share why that gift stands out to them. Ask them what makes gifts so special. (Possible answers: Sometimes they are something that we do not expect, and sometimes they are exactly what we wanted; we don t have to pay for them or earn them; gifts make us feel loved and special, etc.) STEP 3: Have kids open their gift bags or card holders. Explain to kids that God offered a very special gift to everyone, something that no one deserved: that gift is grace. But in order to receive that gift, we have to realize that we need and want that gift, and then we have to receive it in faith. STEP 4: Open in prayer, asking God to help kids review and remember the great gift of God s grace. Transition to main lesson.

T&T MISSION: GRACE IN ACTION RESOURCE BUNDLE ACTIVITY INSTRUCTIONS 4.7 LIVING BY GRACE REVIEW: MAIN LESSON (10 MINUTES) OPTION 2: YOUR PICTURES OF GRACE WHAT YOU LL NEED: Chalkboard and chalk or whiteboard and dry erase markers, T&T Mission: Grace In Action Kid s Handbooks, Bibles for the kids, paper, pens, pencils or markers LEADER PREP: Write the following titles and references on the board: What is Grace? (Romans 5:1-2); Grace and Law (Galatians 3:2-3); Grace to Obey (Titus 3:1 and Colossians 3:20); Grace to Forgive (Ephesians 4:32); Grace and Paul (1 Timothy 1:13-14); Grace in Action (Galatians 6:9-10). STEP 1: Remind kids and leaders (and any parents who are present for this review lesson) that God s grace is offered to everyone and that His grace continues in the lives of believers. As we continue to allow the Holy Spirit to change us to be more like Christ, we will learn to love, obey, serve, forgive, and tell others about God s grace. STEP 2: Have kids work in pairs or with their parents in this activity. Assign each pair or group one of the topics and verses listed on the board, and encourage kids to review that topic and verse in their handbooks and create one or more pictures to illustrate the topic and verses. For example, the pair with the first topic and verses may choose to picture grace as a gift box; the second group may picture their topic as a cross and a list of rules. Give pairs or groups five minutes to create a their pictures demonstrating that topic of grace. STEP 3: After five minutes, have pairs or groups present their pictures and read their verses in the order listed on the board. C. When we are saved, God says we are justified, which means that God judges us as innocent and righteous. When God looks at us, He sees Christ s perfect righteousness that covers all our sin! D. After we are saved, we still need God s grace! We must keep relying on God s grace to help us grow to be more like Jesus and to make good choices to obey, all through the help of the Holy Spirit. STEP 4: Conclude by sharing with kids that God s grace is so amazing that we should want to tell everyone about the grace we have received in Christ. This is the most important thing that people could ever hear! STEP 5: Close the lesson in prayer. Share these key concepts: A. God s grace to us is the gift of salvation, and this gift is offered to everyone. Christ took the punishment we deserve for our sin, and when we place our faith in what God s Word teaches us about Christ dying for our sin and coming to life again, then we will be saved from the punishment for sin.
