06/03/15 Stay Connected this Summer! With Memorial Day behind us and schools across the area wrapping up another year, it feels like summer will be in full swing before we know it. Many of us will come and go on vacations, attend graduation parties, weddings, and gatherings with family and friends. We seem to have a bit less structure in our routine in the summertime; however it is important to keep living as Jesus taught by loving God, neighbor and self. How can we build community through the summer months as we actively wait for our new called pastor? The Transitional Ministry Team (TMT) has planned three meaningful summer opportunities for HOPErs to stay connected during the busy summer months. The Summer Connection opportunities create a social event with a twist that will help build relationships with others who laugh, live, love and learn with us at HOPE. Each evening will have a theme and a separate sign-up sheet to help host families prepare for the event. So carve out some time to plunge into summer with your HOPE family. The first Summer Connection event is a Summer Ice Cream Social at Jeanne and Trott s house. Ice Cream will be provided and participants are asked to bring their favorite toppings to share and enhance the ice cream creations! Other activities include, but not limited to bags, ladder golf, bubbles and hula hoops. Even if you don t like ice cream, come for the fun. Things could get sticky, so sign up soon! Event Date Time Host Family Ice Cream Social Thurs., June 25 6:30 p.m. Jeanne and Trott Patio Party Fri., July 24 6 p.m. Dempsey s Fire Pit Party Aug. TBD TBD Carey Cully/Mark Geiger

NEWS AND NOTES A bit of change in Worship coming up... As some of you know, Worship Ministry Team has been discussing possible ways to experiment with Sunday worship services. So as a "heads up" to our faith family at HOPE UCC, we'll be trying out something new on June 7: Introducing a change in the structure of the service, to see how that goes for a while--moving the scripture and sermon up to earlier in the service. The "message" that morning will also offer some reflection of worship traditions to put it all into perspective. Hope to see you then! HOPER s are flexible! Unfortunately the JHLB&WFH event scheduled for last Sunday at We Grow Dreams had a last minute cancellation, but that didn t stop us from being together! The group gathered at HOPE UCC for an impromptu worship service of singing, prayers, and Pastor Greg took questions from the group. We hope to visit We Grow Dreams for our August 30 Jesus Has Left the Building & We re Following Him event. Stay tuned for details which will be announced in mid-july. Jesus Has Left the Building & We re Following Him is an event which happens about 4 times a year, where on 5 th Sundays (usually 4 times a year) instead of a morning service, Hope UCC goes out into the community to serve others. We d Like to Update HOPE UCC s Website Current Photos Needed! If anyone has any current photos of HOPE activities (children's time, fundraisers, JHLB or anything to do with HOPE) from the last couple of years, could you please pass them on to me? I'm trying to update the website with current photos and information but I'm having a hard time finding current photos. Please email them to me at jennrevoldt@gmail.com. Thanks! Our Guest Speaker on June 14 Rev. Dr. Terry Gallagher is an ordained minister in the UCC. Educated originally as an engineer, Terry, following a 30- year career as an industrial manufacturing executive, answered the Call to Ministry. He attained a Master of Divinity degree from the Ecumenical Theological Seminary in Detroit and a Doctor of Ministry degree from the Chicago Theological Seminary. He served as a local church pastor in Michigan for seven years. In response to the escalating double-edged global crisis of unsustainable economics and ecological destruction, he has focused his ministry efforts in serving the greater society as a Public Theologian. His current ministry is faith-based ecological-justice education, advocacy & action. You can find his efforts working towards a just sustainable world on the web, in the church, in community meetings, in legislative offices and on the public square. HOPErcise... Who NEEDS it? Some of us at HOPE think WE could do with a little more of that... Exercise Especially if it's mixed with having some fun with each other! We'd love to have you join a bunch of us on a monthly basis during the summer over at the HOPE Center. Our first gathering is planned for June 20 at 9 a.m. We can share our collections of dynamic (but perhaps dust-gathering) exercise videos, try a variety of approaches, and end up feeling and looking better by summer's end. All are welcome so bring a friend or a couple of friends. This is a free event. In all of the videos there will be a low-impact modified version of the workout moves for those who need it. The modified version of the workout is a bit easier, but the moves are energetic enough that you ll still get almost the same workout. Sound worthy? Please contact Kathy Carter (773.610.2629 or katharine.c.carter@gmail.com) if you're interested and we'll get this thing going soon

Let Us Know if You d Be Interested We are looking to see if there is any interest in making up a Hesed Home Starter Kit for Hesed House. These kits are given to the formerly homeless to set up housekeeping in their new apartment. These kits include needed household items for the kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, etc. A list of needed items is below. If there is enough interest, the kit will be assembled at the end of June and delivered to Hesed House. Hesed House is also in need of Jeans and XXL T-Shirts that may be purchased at Savers or Goodwill, in addition to any you may have at home. Please contact Sally Bice if you are interested in contributing. Thanks!
