Stevenson wished to add to his stepson's collection of pictures a picture of his own. It turned out to be a map of an island, a work of imagination purely. 7. What did Lloyd insist on in the plan for a story based on the island? There should be no women in it. 8. What near crisis developed in the writing of the story? The writing suddenly stopped because of Stevenson's health. 9. What started further writing? At"tera rest in SwitzerlaIld, the story was resllilled. 10. When the story came out, how was it received? It made Stevenson famous almost over night. 11. What books followed? Kidnapped; The Strange Case oj Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde 1. From what point of view is the story written? First person, told by Jim Hawkins. 2. By whom was he asked to write the particulars about Treasure Island? Squire Trelawney, Doctor Livesey, and other gentlemen. 1 When is the plot supposed to have taken place? The mid-1700's. 4. Where does the beginning of the story take place? At the "Admiral Benbow" inn somewhere in England 5. In what way is it made clear that the new guest of the "Admiral Benbow" inn was an unusual man? He was a brown old sailor with a long, tarry pigtail; he had a sabre cut on his face; he was tail, strong, and heavy with rough hands. 6. How is it suggested he may have been a pirate? He seemed to be in hiding, keeping a lookout for ships along the coast; he had a strong sea chest. He was wary about meeting other sailors and was very quiet when any were present. 7. Of whom did he seem especially afraid of meeting? He feared a one-legged sailor and paid Jim to be on the lookout for him.

8. What further points towards his being a pirate are there? He told dreadful stories about hanging and walking the plank and of deeds and places on the Spanish Main. 9. What was his treatment ofjim's father, the innkeeper? He was rude and intimidating And he did not pay his bills. 10. Why did the new guest fear such a man as Doctor Livesey? The doctor stood up to him and threatened to have him hanged. 1. What hint does the story of "Black Dog" meeting with the "Captain" give the reader? That he was a fellow pirate looking for something in the captain's possession. 2. What was the Captain's real name? Billy Bones 3. Why is he in hiding? He is afraid his former shipmates are after something in his possession. 4. What happened in the fight between Bones and Black Dog? Black Dog would have been killed by Bones if his cutlass had not struck the inn sign. Bones then suffered a stroke. 5. How did Doctor Livesey caution him? Give up drinking or die. 6. How do we know definitely that Bill Bones was a pirate? The doctor recognized the name tattooed on Bones's arm as that of a buccaneer. 7. How long was he likely to remain quiet from the blood-letting done by the doctor? A week. 1. Did Bones heed the doctor's warning? He fought against it. 2. What further information do we get as to his hiding? He fears that his former shipmates will take something that belongs to him. 3. What did Bones ask Jim to do? To have the doctor informed of Flint's crew and have them captured when they arrive at the inn. 4. What is he afraid of getting? "THE BLACK SPOT." 5. What is it? A "summons" which turns out to be a death threat. 6. Why didn't Jim go to the doctor? Jim was afraid that Bones would change his mind and kill Jim. Also, Jim's father died. 7. Who came to the inn on the day following the funeral? A blind man asking for the captain. 8. By what means is the blind man made terrible? The "soft-spoken, eyeless creature" grabbed Jim's arm, nearly breaking it. He had a cruel, cold, ugly voice. 9. How did the appearance of the man affect Bones? It sobered him up and gave his face a sick expression. 10. What did the blind man give the captain? The Black Spot--a warning that he would be put to death at the end of six hours (ten o'clock). 11. What was the captain's reaction? He sprang to his feet and fell dead.

1. What was the situation now? The captain owes Jim and his mother money, but the pirates may be after it, too. They decided to go to the HAMLET for help. 3. What success did they have? The villagers refused to help them when they heard that Captain Flint's crew was involved. Some of the men had seen strangers on the road and suspected they were smugglers. Another man reported seeing a small sailboat in Kitt's Hole. 4. How did Jim's mother meet the situation? She called the men "chicken-hearted" and said that she and Jim would go back for their lawful money. 5. How courageous did Jim's mother prove to be? She was prepared to take the key from the captain's dead body, but Jim did it for her. 6. What time was it at the moment? Six o'clock, giving them four hours. 7. Where did Jim find the key for the chest? Hanging on a tarry string around the captain's neck. 8. What did they find in the box? Nautical objects and small trinkets. 9. What was underneath these and a boat-cloak? A bundle of papers tied up in OILCLOTH and a bag of coins. 10. What article in the box was the most important? The oilcloth bundle. 11. They heard the tapping ofthe blind man's stick on the road approaching them and then slowly fading away. 13. Was Mrs. Hawkins consistently honest? Yes--she would not take the whole amount, saying that it was only seven o'clock and they had until ten 0' clock. 14. Did they remain until ten o'clock? No--when they heard a low whistle, she took what she had counted out and Jim took the oilcloth packet to square the deal. 15. When they got as far as the bridge, what happened? What sound stopped the searchers? Two whistles from the hillside, warning the enemies of approaching dangers. 7. Why did Pew want "it" so badly? "It" meant great wealth to them. 8. Why was the fighting with Pew an advantage to Jim and his mother? The delay caused by it saved Jim and his mother. 9. What was done when the tramp of galloping horses was heard? Why had the officers come? They had come to investigate the sighting of the sailboat in Kitt's Hole. 12. Why did Jim carry the papers to Doctor Livesey? For safe keeping. 1. Where was the doctor? He was dining with the squire. 2. Describe the squire. He was over six feet tall and broad with a rough and reddened face from his travels. His black eyebrows gave him a look of some temper. 3. When Mr. Dance had finished the story of what had taken place at the inn, what did the doctor ask Jim? He asked Jim whether he had the thing the buccaneers were after. 4. What two items did the package contain? A sealed paper and a book. 5. What was the book? An account book. 6. What did the paper contain? A treasure map--duh. 7. The doctor and Hunter took the JOLLY BOAT and went to find what happened to Jim. 3. Why did the doctor and his party decide to occupy the old stockade? It was surrounded by a six foot fence with no opening. It could hold many men, had loopholes for musketry, and enclosed a fresh water spring. 4. Who joined them on the second trip? Abraham Gray. 1. What adventure did the doctor's party have in landing their second supplies? They were shot at by the pirates from the ship. When the shot was returned, it struck a mutineer. He gave every man a task to keep busy and went from one to the other, keeping up their spirits and lending a hand.

4. Why did the doctor think Gunn was sane? After spending three years alone on the island, if Jim thought he might be sane, he probably is. 5. What did Gunn have a fancy for? Cheese. 6. How did the doctor meet the situation? He carried Parmesan cheese in a snuffbox. 7. How was Jim awakened? Cries of, "Flag of truce! " and "Silver himself!" 1. Describe Silver's embassy. Silver and his lieutenant came early in the morning to make terms with those in the stockade. Although Captain Smollet didn't understand what Silver referred to, Jim guessed that Ben Gunn had managed to kill one of the pirates in their camp. Silver said he would let them live in exchange for the map. He said they could come aboard ship or be put safe ashore someplace. 2. Did Captain Smollet yield? No. 3. Note the effect on Silver and his difficulty to leave the stockade. He must crawl along the ground before pulling himselfup. 5. What type of boat was Ben Gunn's? CORACLE (aka the "goat boat") 6. What new fancy entered Jim's head? He wanted to slip out at night and cut the Hispaniola adrift. 1. Give an account of the contents of this chapter --the setting of the Hispaniola adrift and the wrestlers. The HAWSER was taut--he had to wait until it slackened to cut. On board Red-Cap and Israel Hands were fighting. During this time Jim fell asleep in the coracle. 1. How skillfully did Jim come to the handling of the coracle? It was difficult to manage. The more Jim tried to direct it, the less control he had of it. 2. How was the ship progressing? It was very erratic--plainly no one was steering. 3. What thought entered Jim's mind? He wondered whether the men on board ship were drunk or had deserted her. He thought that if he could get aboard, he could return the ship to the captain. 4. Describe the difficulty to follow the ship. Just as he would get near it, the wind would take it away. 5. What success did he have to board the ship? He sprang to his feet and leaped, catching the bowsprit and landed on board the ship. 1. What did Jim see on board the ship? Red-Cap on his back, arms outstretched to the sides. Israel Hands propped up against the BULWARKS. 2. How were the two men affected by the ship's movements? They slipped to and fro. 3. What had Jim seen them doing when he peered through a port hole? They had been fighting. 4. How did Jim feel about their misery? At first he was filled with pity, but when he remembered the mutiny plan, all pity left him. 5. What more did Jim see on shipboard? The cabin had been trashed--muddy floors, dirty walls, bottles everywhere, torn medical books. 6. What had happened to Red-cap? He was killed. 7. What did Jim do with the colors? He tore the flag down and threw it in the sea. 8. What did Hands say he would do for Jim? He would give Jim directions to steer the ship to a landing place. 9. How did Hands look at Jim? Threateningly as he watched Jim at his work

1. What did Hands tell Jim to do with the body of O'Brien? He told Jim to toss the body overboard. 2. What did Jim do when he went to get the wine for Hands? He went below, took off his shoes so as to make no noise and went to a place where he could watch Hands. 3. What did Hands do? He crawled across the deck to get a DIRK, which he hid in his jacket, and returned to his original spot. 4. Of what was Jim now certain? He could move, and he was armed. 5. How do their interests agree? They both wanted the ship stranded in a sheltered place. 6. How successful was the guiding of the ship? It was accomplished with neatness and success. 7. What did Hands attempt to do to Jim? He tried to kill him. 8. What did Jim do to escape Hands? He climbed quickly to the cross tree just before Hands threw his knife. It struck the mast a foot below Jim. 9. How was Jim taken off guard? He was able to prime his two pistols, but Hands threw his knife, pinning Jim's shoulder to the mast. 10. What did Jim do in his pain and surprise? Both pistols fired and fell from his hands. He had struck Hands, who fell into the water, too. 1. How did Jim get free of the dirk? When he shuddered, it tore his shoulder free. He was then able to jerk his coat and shirt free and climb down the mast. 2. What did Jim do with the body of O'Brien? He picked it up and threw it into the water where it lay beside Hands. 3. How did he make the ship safe? He removed the sails. 4. What did he find on returning to the stockade? It was occupied by the pirates. Cap'n Flint sounded the alarm, and Jim was captured. 1. In what instances has Jim helped his friends? He heard the plot from the apple barrel; he found Ben Gunn; he saved the ship. 2. In which cases has he done it through luck or through love of adventure? A bit of both in each case. 3. How have the buccaneers been defeating their own cause and destroying themselves? They have been drinking and fighting.

4. What did Silver tell Jim? He said Jim would have to stay with them. He told Jim that the doctor had turned against Jim, and his own men wouldn't have him. 5. Note what further Silver said about Jim's company. He told Jim to join the pirates. 6. What did Jim answer? He told them that he was responsible for the bad situation of Silver's company. He also said he could save them from the gallows. 7. What was Morgan about to do when Jim's information had been corroborated? He drew his knife to kill Jim. 8. What was the state of Silver's men? They were unhappy with Silver's leadership and the way he defended and protected Jim. 9. What pact did Silver and Jim make? To help each other in case of need. 1.
