Spreading A Love for God and His Glory September 24, 2017 So he brought his people out with joy, his chosen ones with singing. And he gave them the lands of the nations, and they took possession of the fruit of the peoples' toil, that they might keep his statutes and observe his laws. Praise the LORD! Psalm 105:43-45

Our worship is a response to God s initiative. The pattern of our worship reflects the gospel. WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS *CALL TO WORSHIP: Psalm 68:32-35 Leader: O kingdoms of the earth, sing to God; sing praises to the Lord, to him who rides in the heavens, the ancient heavens; behold, he sends out his voice, his mighty voice. All: Ascribe power to God, whose majesty is over Israel, and whose power is in the skies. Leader: Awesome is God from his sanctuary; the God of Israel he is the one who gives power and strength to his people. All: Blessed be God! *JESUS I COME Out of my bondage, sorrow and night, Jesus, I come; Jesus, I come. Into thy freedom, gladness and light, Jesus, I come to thee. Out of my sickness into thy health, Out of my wanting and into thy wealth, Out of my sin and into thyself, Jesus, I come to thee. Out of my shameful failure and loss, Jesus, I come; Jesus, I come. Into the glorious gain of thy cross, Jesus, I come to thee. Out of earth s sorrows into thy balm, Out of life s storms and into thy calm, Out of distress into jubilant psalm, Jesus, I come to thee. Out of unrest and arrogant pride, Jesus, I come; Jesus, I come. Into thy blessed will to abide, Jesus, I come to thee. Out of myself to dwell in thy love, Out of despair into raptures above, Upward forever on wings like a dove, Jesus, I come to thee. Out of the fear and dread of the tomb, Jesus, I come; Jesus, I come. Into the joy and light of thy home, Jesus, I come to thee. Out of the depths of ruin untold, Into the peace of thy sheltering fold, Ever thy glorious face to behold, Jesus, I come to thee. Jesus, I come to thee. - 2 -

*COME YE SINNERS Come ye sinners, poor and wretched, weak and wounded, sick and sore. Jesus, ready, stands to save you, full of pity joined with power. He is able, he is able; he is willing; doubt no more. Come ye needy, come and welcome; God s free bounty glorify: True belief and true repentance, every grace that brings you nigh. Without money, without money, come to Jesus Christ and buy. Come ye weary, heavy laden, bruised and broken by the fall. If you tarry till you re better, you will never come at all. Not the righteous, not the righteous; sinners Jesus came to call. Let not conscience make you linger, nor of fitness fondly dream. All the fitness he requireth is to feel your need of him. This he gives you, this he gives you, tis the Spirit s rising beam. Call to Worship Worship begins with God who invites us and welcomes us into his presence. Because of Christ, we can approach God with boldness even though we are sinful and weak. Lo! The Incarnate God, ascended; pleads the merit of his blood. Venture on him; venture wholly, let no other trust intrude. None but Jesus, none but Jesus can do helpless sinners good. *PRAYER OF PRAISE *Indicates when to stand. *GOD BE MERCIFUL TO ME God, be merciful to me; on Thy grace I rest my plea Plenteous in compassion Thou, blot out my transgressions now; Wash me, make me pure within; cleanse, O cleanse me from my sin. My transgressions I confess; grief and guilt my soul oppress. I have sinned against Thy grace, and provoked Thee to Thy face. I confess Thy judgment just; speechless, I Thy mercy trust. Broken, humbled to the dust, by Thy wrath and judgment just, Let my contrite heart rejoice, and in gladness hear Thy voice; From my sins O hide Thy face, blot them out in boundless grace. Gracious God, my heart renew, make my spirit right and true. Cast me not away from Thee, let Thy Spirit dwell in me; Thy salvation s joy impart, steadfast make my willing heart. Sinners then shall learn from me, and return, O God, to Thee Savior all my guilt remove, and my tongue shall sing Thy love Touch my silent lips, O Lord, and my mouth shall praise accord. - 4 -

COMMON CONFESSION OF SIN SCRIPTURE OF EXHORTATION: Micah 6:6-8 With what shall I come before the LORD, and bow myself before God on high? Shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves a year old? Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, with ten thousands of rivers of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God? All: Almighty and most merciful Father, we are thankful that your mercy is higher than the heavens, wider than our wanderings, deeper than all our sin. Forgive our frivolous attitude toward life, our callousness toward the suffering of others, our envy of those who have more than us, our obsession with creating a life of constant pleasure, our indifference to the treasures of heaven, our neglect of your wise and gracious law. Transform us by your Spirit, that we may desire what is good, love what you love, and do what you command, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Call to Confession We all sin daily, in thought and word and deed. As we come into God s presence, we acknowledge how we have rebelled against our King and seek his forgiveness. SILENT CONFESSION OF SIN DECLARATION OF GRACE: Micah 7:7-9 But as for me, I will look to the LORD; I will wait for the God of my salvation; my God will hear me. Rejoice not over me, O my enemy; when I fall, I shall rise; when I sit in darkness, the LORD will be a light to me. I will bear the indignation of the LORD because I have sinned against him, until he pleads my cause and executes judgment for me. He will bring me out to the light; I shall look upon his vindication. - 5 -

OFFERTORY & RESPONSE Reminder: please sign and pass the Attendance Register down the pew. 11 a.m. Service: Children ages 4-6 excused for Children s Church (downstairs in the Corner Classroom) *ALL FOR JESUS All for Jesus, all for Jesus! All my being's ransomed pow'rs: All my thoughts and words and doings, all my days and all my hours. Let my hands perform His bidding, let my feet run in His ways; Let my eyes see Jesus only, let my lips speak forth His praise. (Chorus) Jesus, Jesus, how I trust Him! How I've proved Him o'er and o'er Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus! O for grace to trust Him more! Offering We give back to God a portion of what he has given us to use to declare that he is Lord of all. (This is part of our service as a church family, and visitors should not feel obligated to participate.) Worldlings prize their gems of beauty, cling to gilded toys of dust, Boast of wealth and fame and pleasure; only Jesus will I trust. Since my eyes were fixed on Jesus, I've lost sight of all beside; So enchained my spirit's vision, looking at the Crucified. (Chorus) Oh, what wonder! How amazing! Jesus, glorious King of kings, Deigns to call me His beloved, lets me rest beneath His wings. (Chorus) O for grace to trust Him more! - 7 -

Psalm 105 The Faithfulness of God Pastor Lloyd Pierson, Ph.D. When the Invisible God is Seen - Psalm 105:24 45 (ESV) 1 Oh give thanks to the LORD; call upon his name; make known his deeds among the peoples! 2 Sing to him, sing praises to him; tell of all his wondrous works! 5 Remember the wondrous works that he has done, his miracles, and the judgments he uttered, 24 And the Lord made his people very fruitful and made them stronger than their foes. 25 He turned their hearts to hate his people, to deal craftily with his servants. 26 He sent Moses, his servant, and Aaron, whom he had chosen. 27 They performed his signs among them and miracles in the land of Ham. 28 He sent darkness, and made the land dark; they did not rebel against his words. 29 He turned their waters into blood and caused their fish to die. 30 Their land swarmed with frogs, even in the chambers of their kings. 31 He spoke, and there came swarms of flies, and gnats throughout their country. 32 He gave them hail for rain, and fiery lightning bolts through their land. 33 He struck down their vines and fig trees, and shattered the trees of their country. 34 He spoke, and the locusts came, young locusts without number, 35 which devoured all the vegetation in their land and ate up the fruit of their ground. 36 He struck down all the firstborn in their land, the firstfruits of all their strength. 37 Then he brought out Israel with silver and gold, and there was none among his tribes who stumbled. 38 Egypt was glad when they departed, for dread of them had fallen upon it. 39 He spread a cloud for a covering, and fire to give light by night. 40 They asked, and he brought quail, and gave them bread from heaven in abundance. 41 He opened the rock, and water gushed out; it flowed through the desert like a river. 42 For he remembered his holy promise, and Abraham, his servant. 43 So he brought his people out with joy, his chosen ones with singing. 44 And he gave them the lands of the nations, and they took possession of the fruit of the peoples' toil, 45 that they might keep his statutes and observe his laws. Praise the Lord! - 8 -

Sermon Outline I. When God shows He is our God II. When we show we are his people Sermon God addresses and speaks to us by the reading and preaching of his Word. Both Christians and non-christians need to hear the good news of salvation and grow in it. Sermon Questions 1. God is rightly the hero of this psalm for both his hidden hand of providence and his public displays of power. How do these reinforce one another in our walk of faith? 2. Four hundred years ago, Pocahontas died and the Pilgrims had not yet set sail to America. Israel was in Egypt for 400 years waiting on the promises of God. What do you think was their collective memory at that time about God s promises? Does this help in understanding why so many complained bitterly when uprooted? 3. How does the exodus from Egypt define Israel from this point forward? 4. Understandably, oppressed people through the ages have drawn great strength from the Exodus. What are some cautions about doing this? What are some cautions for interpreting disasters? 5. How does v-45 tie this psalm together? How does this verse push back against the spirit of our age? 6. In Galatians 3:6 and 4:28, Paul shows how Jesus brought Gentiles into God s covenant to Israel. How does this enable us to enter into the joy of this psalm? - 9 -

The Lord s Supper The gospel is not only heard, but visibly seen as God invites us to commune with him at his table. In the Lord s Supper we remember and experience Jesus saving work. *JESUS, I MY CROSS HAVE TAKEN Jesus, I my cross have taken, all to leave and follow Thee. Destitute, despised, forsaken, Thou from hence my all shall be. Perish every fond ambition, all I ve sought or hoped or known. Yet how rich is my condition! God and heaven are still my own. Let the world despise and leave me, they have left my Savior, too. Human hearts and looks deceive me; Thou art not, like them, untrue. O while Thou dost smile upon me, God of wisdom, love, and might, Foes may hate and friends disown me, show Thy face and all is bright. Go, then, earthly fame and treasure, come disaster, scorn and pain In Thy service, pain is pleasure, with Thy favor, loss is gain I have called Thee Abba Father, I have stayed my heart on Thee Storms may howl, and clouds may gather; all must work for good to me. Haste thee on from grace to glory, armed by faith, and winged by prayer. Heaven s eternal days before thee, God s own hand shall guide us there. Soon shall close thy earthly mission, soon shall pass thy pilgrim days, Hope shall change to glad fruition, faith to sight, and prayer to praise. CELEBRATION OF THE LORD S SUPPER Wine is located in the two outer rings; juice is located in the center ring. (See FCC observance on below) PRAYER FOR THE CONGREGATION At Faith Covenant, the Lord s Supper is observed each Lord s Day as the climax of our worship service. We invite to the Lord s Table all those who are baptized disciples of Jesus Christ, under the authority of Christ and His body, the Church. By eating the bread and drinking the cup with us as a visitor, you are acknowledging to our church that you are in covenant with God. You also acknowledge that you are a sinner, without hope except in the sovereign mercy of God, and that you are trusting in Jesus Christ alone for your salvation. If you have any doubts about your participation, please speak to the pastor or one of the elders after the service. Wine and bread are the elements of the supper as instituted by Jesus Christ. We recommend the use of wine; however we offer both juice and wine in the tray to allow true liberty of conscience. - 10 -

*LEAD ON O KING ETERNAL Lead on, O King eternal, the day of march has come; Henceforth in fields of conquest Thy tents shall be our home: Through days of preparation Thy grace has made us strong, And now, O King eternal, we lift our battle song. Lead on, O King eternal, till sin's fierce war shall cease, And Holiness shall whisper the sweet amen of peace; For not with swords loud clashing, nor roll of stirring drums, But deeds of love and mercy, the heav'nly kingdom comes. (Chorus) Lead on O King, Lead on O King Lead on O King, eternal King lead on Lead on, O King eternal, we follow, not with fears; For gladness breaks like morning where'er thy face appears; Thy cross is lifted o'er us; we journey in its light: The crown awaits the conquest; lead on, O God of might. (Chorus 2x) Benediction Just as worship begins with God s call, it ends with God sending us into the world with his word of grace. We go forth to live and serve by the power of his grace, not our own strength. *BENEDICTION If you are in need of personal prayer, an elder is available up front after the service.
