HOW TO STUDY THE BIBLE 1 (A.3.SPRING.10) Biblical Reference Luke 10:29-37 Key Verse John 5:12 Key Concept Jesus teaches me that I must love others Educational Objectives Life Application At the end of this lesson, children will be able to: 1. Dramatize the parable of the Good Samaritan. 2. Name their good friends. 3. Memorize the Key Verse and express something they can do to show love to others. When Jesus was here on earth, he talked about God. Through Jesus, God taught us how to live according to God s will. When we live according to what God taught us, God blesses us. Children must learn to obey what God taught us through Jesus. Jesus was the best example of obedience we ve seen on earth. This week, children will discuss things they can do to show obedience just as Jesus did. INSTRUCTIONS My GROW Adventure with God Weekly Review: As children enter, take time to have them reflect on their adventure with God booklets, and either discuss or use art materials to express their journey during the past week. You may wish to add any art work, written poems, prayers or songs to a GROW wall in the room. You can find my GROW Adventure with God materials at CovChurch.org/children/adventures-with-god. Opening Prayer: Gather children around a candle. Light the candle, and explain that we are entering into a special time with God. Encourage the children to hold their hands out in front of them, palms up, as a sign they are ready to receive what God has for them today. Prayer Example: Lord God, thank you for making us, for loving us, for forgiving us, and guiding us. We know you are here with us right now. As we enter into your word, the Bible, help us draw close to you, to understand and to listen to what you have to say to us. Amen (For safety sake, you may wish to extinguish the candle after the prayer.) Bible Reading: Explain that we read the Bible first to spend time with God. Children can remain with hands out stretched, palms up, to receive the word as it s being read. Alternatively they can be invited to draw what they hear. Read the Key Verse for the day twice and ask children to respond. Question Examples: What did you notice in this passage? How does it make you feel? Was there anything you would ask God about that you didn t understand or was confusing? Is God saying anything to you though the story? Song: Play a familiar song today that speaks of God s love for us. If you have time, sing it with action and/or movement. Learning and engaging God s word should be fun! Bible Exploration: Consider using the figures on pages 5-7 to tell today s story. Color, cut and glue the figures to the popsicle sticks before class. Open the Bible to read today s story. Before you start, mention that Jesus told this story to his friends, too. There was a man walking on a road through a dangerous mountain from one city to another. Thieves attacked the man by robbing him and left him to die on the side of the road. Soon after, a very religious person went through the same path. But once he saw the man on the road, he decided to take a detour. Then, a very educated and intelligent person came down the road. He approached the wounded man but also took another route because he was in a hurry. Lastly, a man everyone 2 P a g e

disliked saw the injured man. He felt compassion for the injured man. He approached him, healed the wounds with oil and wine and put band aids on him. They mounted the donkey and took him to a hotel to nurse him there. Jesus asked his friends: "Which of these three do you think was a good neighbor to the injured man? Jesus said the man who had love for the wounded was a good neighbor. This is a great way to reinforce the truth Jesus was teaching his disciples. Craft: Make copies of the attached puzzle on page 8 for each child. Children can color, cut up the pieces, and then take it home to make with the help of their parents. Snacks: Ask children to thank God for their parents who have given us so much and also take the opportunity to give thanks for refreshments and snacks. Repeat the Key Verse several times. While eating, ask how they can show love to their friends and even to unkind people. Remind children that it s the will of God for us to fill people with love. Today's GROW Adventure with God Review: G=God's Word: What is the story? (Give children an opportunity to express their understanding of the story). R=Relationships: Is there anything in today's bible story that shows us how we should or shouldn't share God's love with others? (Remind children that sometimes God uses the stories of the bible to show us how we shouldn't act toward God or others. Give children a chance to consider how we might show God's love instead). O=Outward Action: Is there anything in the bible story that shows us how we should help or serve God or others? (Explore concrete ways the children could live this out in the coming week). W=Worship: Is there anything in the bible story that shows us how we should accept God's love for us and others? Ask: How do you feel about God? What would you like to say to God? 3 P a g e

Closing Prayer: Gather children around the candle again. As you light the candle, explain that the flame is something that is present in the light and the darkness. In the same way, the candle reminds us that God is always with us. Is there anything anyone wishes to say to God? After children have responded, close the prayer time. Prayer Example: Lord God, we thank you that you are always with us, and always love us. It s good to be with you. Thank you for what we have learned today. Thank you for being with us and for teaching us through the Bible. Help us to remember what you have taught us today and to live it out when we leave. Amen 4 P a g e
