Welcome to Zion Lutheran Church! 1732 S. Here Jesus makes it explicit that the reversal of values in God s community is a direct challenge to the values of the dominant culture, where wielding power over others is what makes you great. When we pray your kingdom come we are praying for an end to tyranny and oppression. We pray this gathered around the cross, a sign of great shame transformed to be the sign of great honor and service. GATHERING MUSIC WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS CALL TO WORSHIP (please stand) Bless the Lord, O my soul. Your greatness astounds us. Clothed with honor and majesty and robed in light Your greatness astounds us. You stretch out the heavens like a tent, making the winds your messengers, and fire and flame your servants. Your greatness astounds us. In your wisdom you created the earth and all that is within it. In thanksgiving, we worship and praise God. OPENING SONG Blessed Be the Lord God Almighty Father in heaven how we love You. We lift your name in all the earth. May Your Kingdom be established in our praises. As Your people declare Your mighty works. PRAYER OF CONFESSION Jesus said to his disciples and says to us, that lording it over others is unacceptable and that...whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be the slave of all. For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many. Pause for silent reflection Let us pray: Jesus, Friend and Savior, we confess that all too often we find pleasure in lording it over others - even here in church - and we need to hear you speak these words about the true meaning of greatness directly to us. Unclog our ears and soften our hearts so that we put the needs of others before our own needs; so that we share what we have rather than hoarding it for ourselves; and use our gifts to benefit others, rather than increasing our own status and position. 1 2
Lord Jesus Christ, keep reminding us that following you means emptying ourselves of all self-serving power and filling ourselves with the desire to serve others as willingly as you did. Forgive any reluctance on our part to follow your example; replace any selfish power-plays of ours with your inclusive love, your compassion and your humility. These prayers we offer in your name and for your sake. Amen. ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS The Son of Man came not to be served but to serve and to give his life a ransom for many. (Mark 10:45) And so, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him. (Hebrews 5:9b) The good news therefore is this: in Jesus Christ you are forgiven. Thanks be to God! Amen. 7 BLESSING Go into this week blessed by the greatness and glory of God, filled with the love of Jesus Christ, led by the guidance and power of the Holy Spirit. Amen. SENDING SONG The Wonderful Cross When I survey the wonderful cross, On which the Prince of Glory died. My richest gain I count but loss, And pour contempt on all my pride. See from his head, his hands his feet, sorrow and love flow mingled down. Did ere such love and sorrow meet, Or thorns compose so rich a crown. Bids me come and die and find that I may truly live. All who gather here by grace draw near and bless Your name. Were the whole realm of nature mine, That were a tribute far too small. Love so amazing so divine, Demands my soul, my life, my all. Bids me come and die and find that I may truly live. All who gather here by grace draw near and bless Your name. Bids me come and die and find that I may truly live. All who gather here by grace draw near and bless Your name. 8
