April 2012 You don't choose your family. They are God's gift to you, as you are to them. - Desmond Tutu D uring the 1970 s inflation an unemployment in America was at its highest. Families all around the country were going through times of uncertainty, yet this same families turned on their TV sets every week to watch the sitcom Good Times. The show involved an African American family struggling to survive in an inner city high-rise project in Chicago. The episodes were usually more uplifting and positive than they were depressing, as the Evans family stuck together and persevered. The father bounced from job to job but the family managed to laugh and find happiness together because they were together. Easter is a time when we come together as a family to celebrate. To celebrate in the midst of hard times, the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. A time to thank God for giving the world His Son, Jesus, who grew up to die for our sins and rise again. Easter is an opportunity to celebrate togetherness. We will sit down at Sunday meals and partake of God s blessings. We will give children Easter Baskets as a sign of our love. We will take part in activities that involve the whole family, like Easter Egg Hunts, play board games, watch movies and if the weather is nice, we will set our picnic tables and eat in the backyard. Some of us will even arrange plans to travel so that we can be with people who are very important to us because family matters. The great truth of God s Word is that 1 (Continued on page 3)

(Continued from page 1) even if we don t have family with which to gather this Easter, God wants to include us in His family through a personal relationship with His Son, Jesus. And God also wants each of us to be a part of our local church family as well, where we can receive encouragement and accountability, and where we can serve His Kingdom along our spiritual brothers and sisters. Here at Cary UMC we invite you to come and celebrate all together as a family the resurrection of our Lord. We will gather on April 8 th, to sing, pray and worship our God, the one who defeated and conquered death and through whom all our blessings flow. Happy Easter! Pastors David and Shirley T 21st Century News here are many committees in our church. One of lesser known committees is called 21st Century Seeds. This committee is charged with supporting the technical needs of the church and staff and improving communications and worship in the church through technology. This committee recently has been busy upgrading the network infrastructure in the church. If they did a good job, you should hardly have noticed. Several network access points have been added, the speed of the existing Local Area Network has been enhanced and Wireless access for members and guests has been provided. The wireless access guest access provides access to the internet without allowing for access to the computers, printer or other equipment inside the church. If you would like to use the wireless access, ask in the church office or ask a member of the 21st Century Seeds committee how to get connected. CUMC Webpage W e are looking to improve the use on the content of our webpage. One way to do that is to get many people involved in updating the content on the webpage. We are looking for a representative from each committee and group in the church to volunteer to setup and maintain a webpage for your group. Please let Jim Ferree know who the representative for your group will be and how much training you think will be needed in order to get started. For most, it should just require and hour or two of training on Ezekial, the tool we use to maintain and create our webpage. T Evangelism News hanks to everyone that worked at our booth at the Community Showcase on March 3rd. We feel it was a great success. We enjoyed talking to everyone and hopefully tempted some of them to join us some Sunday. We will be hosting the fellowship for our confirmation class on May 6th. and look forward to serving all the confirmands after the service along with their families. I hope all of you will join us for cake and coffee/punch at 12:00 after the second service to congratulate them. It's important for all of us to support our young people in all they do. We are looking for new members for our Evangelism Committee. If you are interested in joining us, please come to a meeting on the third Tues. at 7:00 in fellowship hall. We would love to have you. Soon we will be starting the sign up for our new picture directory. There is a meeting on April 10th at 6:30 in fellowship hall given by a representative of Lifetouch which is the company that we will be working with for the directory. We will need volunteers to help with several different areas and we will also need people on the days of the actual picture taking. Please feel free to come to the meeting or call Sally Lorenzen (847-639- 9565) or Lynn Grap (815-307-0262) for more information. This will be a great benefit for our congregation to help us to know each other and recognize other members of our church. It's a good opportunity to gather your family together for a great family photo. 3
Computer Training Several people have been asking for training on computers. We have heard there is a desire for basic training on how to use email and basic navigation on the computer. If you are interested in this or other training, please let Jim Ferree know so we can schedule some time to provide this training. 4

In rural Nebraska in the early 20th century, three of the four Koontz children died of diphtheria in one week. On the following Easter morning, the parents and surviving child attended church. Because Mr. Koontz was Sunday school superintendent, he read aloud the Easter message. Although many people wept, he and his wife stayed calm. Later, a boy walking home said, The Koontzes must really believe the Easter story. His father answered, All Christians do. The boy replied, Not the way they do! 8 Homiletics

T Rummage Sale Thankyou s he United Methodist Women want to thank the Rummage Sale Committee, and all of you who donated merchandise, and those of you who spent many hours working at this event. Our Sale is beneficial to many. We sell merchandise at reasonable prices, making it affordable to those who may otherwise have to go without. Items that were not purchased, were sent to the Cancer Society, or boxed up for the Mission Trip to South Dakota. Proceeds of the sale are used in the Mission Work of the UMW which includes the Cary Food Pantry, CUMC, Helping Hands, Home of the Sparrow, and Turning Point. Putting this in perspective a shopper on Sat. wanted to thank CUMC. Because of our Sale, and others like it, she has been able to cloth her Children, thru these hard times.. Sincere thanks to all of you, what a wonderful way to give. 16 Nancy Kraus, Publicity Coordinator
