AMERICAN DELEGATION OF SAVOY ORDERS Eighth Annual St. Lazarus Mass and Dinner March 20, 2013 30 th Anniversary Commemorative Mass for King Umberto II On March 20, 2013, the Knights and Dames of the American Delegation of Savoy Orders of the Royal House of Savoy and their guests participated in the eighth annual St. Lazarus Mass at the University Church of St. Joseph, Avenue of the Americas, New York City, commemorating the 30th Anniversary of the death of King Umberto II of Italy, who died in Switzerland on March 18, 1983. After the referendum of June 2, 1946, the King left Italy to avoid the possibility of a civil war. He endured a 36 year exile in Portugal and was never allowed back to Italy, neither to die there nor to be buried in his own country. His body was laid to rest like those of many of his earliest forbearers in the ancient Savoy Royal Abbey of Hautecombe, France. However, Italy s last Sovereign is not forgotten by the members of the Savoy Orders who carry on the traditions and charitable work of the Dynastic Orders of the Royal House of Savoy. Also present at the Mass were representatives of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher, the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and of Malta and the Portuguese Order of St. Michael of the Wing who joined in paying their respects to the memory of the last king of Italy.
