Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day then he is not to let his wife enter the Hammam, and whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day. And whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, then he is not to sit at a spread in which Khamr (alcohol) is circulated." الراوي:جابر بن عبداهلل رضي اهلل عنه املحدث:األلباني - املصدر:صحيح الترمذي- الصفحة أو الرقم: 2801 خالصة حكم املحدث:حسن It is very important to know the exact meaning of the words in the Arabic language. Otherwise it can lead to deviation due to misunderstanding or shallow understanding of the arabic words. We need to understand the detailed explanation (شرح) of the hadith and not just learn it by translation. This hadith mentions about some conditions for the one believes in Allah سبحانه وتعالى and in the Last Day. Belief in Allah سبحانه وتعالى is the goal. The one who believes in the Last Day believes that he will be accounted on the Day of Judgement. There are three matters mentioned in this hadith: 1-Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him not enter a bath house except wearing an Izar (waist wrap) Izaar (إزار) is a cloth which covers the awrah of a man. Hamam (حمام) is a public bathroom for shower; it is like a spa. Its not a place to answer to the call of nature. In the earlier times they did not have bathrooms in their houses or their rooms. There was a public bathroom where everybody showered together. For the man, he is allowed to go to such a place, but there is a restriction- he must be covering his awrah. The awrah of a man is from his navel to the knee. In the times of ignorance these rules were not there in many areas. Islam teaches us the beautiful akhlaaq (manners) for every situation. When Islam spread, these rules also spread. 2-Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day then he is not to let his wife enter the Hammam The women are not allowed to enter such a place where their awrah can be exposed to others. It is the responsibility of a husband to not allow his wife to go to places where her awrah can be revealed. This is how to honor the wives. This is a safeguard for society. Modesty is a sign of faith. It is negating modesty to visit such places. -1-
3- Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day. And whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, then he is not to sit at a spread in which Khamr (alcohol) is circulated. This is another safeguard for society. Do not sit at a table where alcohol is being circulated. This is protection for the faith, from being influenced by others. Faith is in the heart, but these are signs of faith which shows on your actions. You cannot separate faith from akhlaaq, attitude or manners. Islam is teaching us a complete code of life. If something is forbidden that means that it is something bad. We need to believe in Allah وتعالى.سبحانه He knows and I don t know. It was asked. "What is his reward, O Allah's Messenger "?(ﷺ) He said, "(To be entertained generously) for a day and a night with high quality of food and the guest has the right to be entertained for three days (with ordinary food) and if he stays longer, what he will be provided with will be regarded as Sadaqa (a charitable gift). And anybody who believes in Allah and the Last Day should talk what is good or keep quiet (i.e. abstain from all kinds of dirty and evil talks). الراوي:أبو شريح العدوي الخزاعي الكعبي رضي اهلل عنه املحدث:األلباني - املصدر:صحيح األدب املفرد- الصفحة أو الرقم: 569 خالصة حكم املحدث:صحيح Notice that the narrator is explaining in detail, My ears heard and my eyes saw about the narration. This hadith also mentions some other indicators of belief in Allah سبحانه وتعالى and the Last Day. There are three matters mentioned in this hadith: 1- Anybody who believes in Allah and the Last Day, should serve his neighbour generously This is a sign for your faith. To honour the neighbours, to be generous with them. There are three types of neighbours: (Disbeliever) كافر 1. (Muslim) مسلم 2. relative) (Muslim and close مسلم و 3. One needs to be generous with all of them- do the best what you can. -2-

(الصبر عليهم) 2- To be patient with them If they harm you in any way, be patient with them. The Prophet (ﷺ) had a Jew neighbour who used to put garbage on his path everyday, yet he did not complain. Once when the Prophet (ﷺ) did not see the garbage, he went to visit the Jew man and found out that he was sick. The Jew was so moved that he.(ﷺ) accepted Islam. This is the beautiful akhlaaq (manners) of our beloved Prophet It is nothing but the sicknesses of our heart; our ego that prevents us from being patient and practising ihsaan. (االحسان اليهم) 3- To do ihsaan (excellence) to them To do extra towards them- visit them, give them food, etc. We need to show good akhlaaq towards our neighbours who are disbelievers as a means of dawah to them. Abu Hurayra reported that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "I was sent to perfect good character. [Al Adab Al Mufrad Book 14, Hadith 273] -3-
There was a lady who was a worshipper- praying at night, etc. But she used to harm her neighbours by her tongue. The Prophet (ﷺ) said she would enter Hell. Akhlaaq (manners) is an indicator of the level of faith. It is from the fruits of faith which the people can taste. A Muslim neighbour has two rights- that of a neighbour and also of a Muslim brother. A Muslim neighbour who is also a relative has three rights- of a neighbour, Muslim brother and relative. 2-Anybody who believes in Allah and the Last Day should serve his guest generously by giving him his reward." When the Angels came to Ibrahim عليه السالم in human form, he was a generous host though he did not know that they are angels. As a reward means to give them something special; to serve them generously. Especially as soon as they arrive, to give them a lot of food. This is for one day and one night. For three days, be hospitable although it does not need to be as much as on the first day. After three days whatever you do will be counted as charity for you. It may be difficult to take care of the guests as the days go by, so this is a comfort for the host. The scholars noted that knowing this hadith also makes the guest not want to stay more than three days as they would not prefer to be the recipients of charity. 3-And anybody who believes in Allah and the Last Day should talk what is good or keep quiet (فليقل خير) Speak good (كالم حالل) Allowed speech (ال مضرة فيه) No harm in it (فيه منفعة) Has benefit in it (او ليصمت) Be silent (ال خير) No goodness (شر بذاته) Evil by itself (شر لغيره) Evil by others (زيادة عن الحاجة) More than required (ما ال يعنينا) Not your concern Speak what is lawful, not sin. Speak to make others happy, not to hurt them. The words itself and the delivery of the words needs to be good. Especially if the truth is mentioned in a bad way, it can be a fitnah. The truth; i.e., the Qur an and the sunnah cannot be used as a weapon to attach others- it cannot used to fulfil our desires. That is why we need to be extra careful when talking about religion. We cannot use good words with a bad intention. The hypocrites speak in a beautiful manner but their intention is bad. It is better to be quiet than to speak bad. There are checkpoints before we speak: Check: Are the words good? If yes, then check: Am I saying it with a good intention? If yes, it is better to speak. If not, be silent. If the words are not good, be silent. -4-

[Jami` at-tirmidhi, Vol. 4, Book 11, Hadith 2501] The more one speaks, the more he is prone to make mistakes. The Prophet (ﷺ) said that the people are thrown onto their faces into Hell because of their tongues. The worst sword is a person s tongue; he can use it to put others down, to backbite, slander, insult others. All of this is out of desire. That s why Allah سبحانه وتعالى compared backbiting to eating the flesh of a dead brother. The solution is to only speak with taqwa; without any desire بدون هوى),(الكالم to guard the tongue. -5-
