Fr. Larry s Corner of the Bulletin Today we celebrate All Saints Day. In many ways, this will be our special day sometime in the future because we are all called to be saints. In the early Church, this term referred to Christians in general, because those who share God s life are holy (that s what saint means). Very early on it was used to designate people whose holiness was outstanding - especially the martyrs. Today the official list of saints names is close to 7000 people whose holiness the Church officially recognizes. They give us heroic examples of having faithfully followed Christ. We all have heroes, especially as we grow up. It s good to have as heroes people who have excelled in living holy lives, not just sports figures or rock stars. It s also good to have friends in high places when we need help. We often ask our friends to pray for us in difficult times. Why not ask those whom we know are special friends of God to pray for us too! We don t adore saints (as we are sometimes accused of doing) - we adore only God, but we also honor those who have made it and we ask for their prayers. Today we also honor all those who haven t made it to the major leagues of sainthood - parents, grandparents, friends who have inspired us and help us along our journey to God but who are unnamed. They are part of that great multitude which no one could count, from every nation, race, people, and tongue which our first reading from the Book of Revelations tells us about today. We ask their prayers and we ask them to help us to someday be with them as saints. Saint Larry of Milwaukee - has a nice ring to it! God bless!
