THE PRACTICE OF THE MEDITATION JOURNAL One of the key practices in the Meditation Teacher Training Program is to keep a meditation journal, which contains reflections on your thoughts, emotions, actions and reactions externally, as well as internally. This process of journaling will reveal the effect that meditation has upon your mind, and thus upon your life. Your journal will reveal how your meditation of yesterday has affected you today. Reflection upon the relationship between your meditation states and your life is called Tarka on meditation. Tarka is the practice of quieting the mind at the end of the day, turning inward and upward, and then reflecting upon the events of the day. Tarka is a step beyond meditation. The cave yogis use it but they keep the record mentally. In our busy, hectic lives, a journal is needed to have a clear record of our blindspots and emotional conditions that prevent our minds from becoming quiet. It shows our progress along the spiritual path to maturity. Journaling is a record of the observation of your successes and failures on the path to wisdom, which will provide crucial insight into your mind s emotional blind-spots. Because the mind functions through many emotional filters, it modifies and distorts your perception and your memory based upon your subconscious emotions and values. It is the nature of the mind to filter out certain aspects of an experience, and to overemphasize other aspects. The practice of journaling helps you hold your memories with a minimum of distortion. As time goes by, your meditation journal will help you to see more clearly what your mind is doing skillfully, and what your mind is failing to do skillfully. As these patterns are revealed, you will begin to see your mind as it is. The simple, vital truth is this: 1. Meditation can only be attained if you have a sane lifestyle. 2. Meditation can only be attained if your mind is held in a state of balance. 3. Meditation can only be attained if your inner mind is functioning harmoniously according to the laws of self-conscious awareness. The practice of meditation will soften and refine your personality. Through meditation you will become more peaceful, less emotional and more fulfilled. Meditation, by relieving stress, allows you to make better choices and decisions. This will improve your health and bring greater fulfillment. Assignments - Month One 21 The Temple of Kriya Yoga ॐ

HOW TO MEDITATE - LESSON TWO Goswami Kriyananda Introduction In this lesson we will continue our study of meditation by taking a deeper look at the preparatory practices to meditation, adding an additional technique and reviewing the value of meditation in your everyday life. For your study, here is a list of key concepts to attune to as you work your way through the lesson: Cleansing and Purification - Food - Water - Aura Comfort in Meditation: currents and vibrations Keying Breath Mudra Object of Beauty Meditation Differences Between the Techniques The Value of Meditation Cleansing and Purification for Meditation In lesson one we discussed the importance of a clean, quiet environment for meditation and some simple practices to purify your place of meditation. Meditation is both a practice and a lifestyle. In this lesson we will discuss further practices for cleansing and purification that will impact not only your meditation practice but your lifestyle. Food. We need to talk about purifying you, the body-mind complex. To have great success in meditation, you have to observe your diet. Diet here really refers to what you eat, rather than to a restriction on eating. One man s meat is another man s poison. I cannot, nor will I, tell you what you should or should not be eating. There are no right or wrong things to begin with, it s a matter of what is comfortable to you. Some people eat cucumbers and they get acid in their stomach. Some people eat beans and they get gas. You need to watch your diet, by making a note of the types of food you eat and observing whether the foods make you restless or lethargic that day or the next. EXPERIENCING MEDITATION AS AN EXPANSIVE STATE by Goswami Kriyananda Introduction: In this lesson we will examine a concept that may at first strike you as a paradox: meditation is an expansive state. We ve defined meditation as a movement inward and upward, yet expansive seems to imply an outward movement. Meditation frees us from the constrictive hold of desire so that we can experience a more expansive view of Reality and thus better serve the world. We will take a deeper look at the nature of desire and desirelessness so that we can understand the true meaning of meditation as an expansive state. We will also learn a technique that will help one better grasp these concepts. Here is an outline of key concepts from this lesson to help organize your thoughts and your study: Revisiting the Purpose of Meditation - The nature of the desiring principle The Desireless State - Transcending the symbolic battle of the sexes - Making decisions on the battlefield of life Meditation as a Completeness Meditation as an Expansive State - Cosmic pre-association - Accepting and acting in accordance with the flow of life - Bringing meditation into the world Aum-Tracking Technique Revisiting the Purpose of Meditation From the beginning of your Meditation Teacher Training course, we have stated that the purpose of meditation is getting rid of things, not getting things. In other words, meditation will help you to achieve a certain level of detachment in the face of a world that is running, ranting and raving. While the word detachment is often used, many people do not fully grasp its meaning, or fear that being detached makes one a non-participant in life. In fact, it is just the opposite. Remember what we ve been saying: you are a part of life, not apart from it. Detachment means that you can be a compassionate participant in life without your emotionality taking control of you. 1 Supplementary Material - Month Six ॐ The Temple of Kriya Yoga
