ALVARO AND JOSEMARIA: Beatification of Venerable Alvaro del Portillo and Pilgrimage In the Footsteps of St. Josemaria Escriva Dear Friends: Logroño 4 Torreciudad 3 You are invited to join the St. Josemaria Institute and Mater Dei Tours on a special pilgrimage to Spain - Alvaro and Josemaria: Beatification of Venerable Alvaro del Portillo and Pilgrimage In the Footsteps of St. Josemaria Escriva, September 20 to 30, 2014. 7 8 Avila Segovia Montserrat 2 Zaragoza 5 Barcelona 1 Our pilgrimage will begin in Barcelona and include visits to the birthplace of St. Josemaria Escriva (Barbastro), the places of his childhood and seminary years (Logroño and Zaragoza), the birthplace of Bishop Alvaro del Portillo and the early years of Opus Dei in Madrid. We will also visit the Marian Shrines of Montserrat, Our Lady of the Pillar, Sonsoles, and Torreciudad. 6 Madrid Our pilgrimage to these places will lead up to our arrival in Madrid for the Mass of Beatification of Bishop Alvaro del Portillo on September 27, 2014 and the special events planned for this blessed event. A chaplain will accompany the group and each day will include Mass and time for private prayer as well as confession. SPAIN The pilgrimage will be a joyous occasion for deep prayer, personal conversion and thanksgiving to God for all His blessings, especially through the intercessions of St. Josemaria Escriva and Bishop Alvaro del Portillo. I hope that you will join us! Sincerely, VENERABLE ALVARO DEL PORTILLO Rev. James Socias President St. Josemaria Institute Born on March 11, 1914 in Madrid, Spain, Alvaro del Portillo was Saint Josemaria Escriva s faithful co-worker and his first successor at the head of Opus Dei. As an exemplary priest, he spent his whole life in the service of the Church, including work on various commissions at the Second Vatican Council. He was ordained a bishop in 1991 by John Paul II. He died in Rome on March 23, 1994 a few hours after returning from a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. His Cause for Canonization was opened in Rome in 2004 and he will be beatified in Madrid on September 27, 2014. The Basilica enshrines the pillar on which the Virgin Mary appeared to the apostle St. James during his apostolic mission to Spain, also known as the Camino de Santiago. St. Josemaria arrived in Zaragoza in 1920 for his studies at the Seminary of San Carlos and was known to visit the basilica every day entrusting himself to our Lady while waiting for a definitive answer regarding God s will. St. Josemaria was ordained to the priesthood at the Church of San Carlos in Zaragoza and celebrated his first Mass at the Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar. After visiting the basilica, take a walking tour of the town to see the site of the Seminary of San Carlos, the Escriva s apartment and the Cathedral of Zaragoza. This afternoon enjoy free time for lunch in Zaragoza and then depart for Madrid. After settling into the hotel enjoy a group dinner on the first of five nights in Madrid. ST. JOSEMARIA INSTITUTE AVIL A & SEGOVIA Monday, September 29 DAY 10: After breakfast depart the hotel for a day to explore the historical cities of Avila and Segovia. Mass will be celebrated at the Church of Our Lady of Sonsoles where St. Josemaria made a pilgrimage on May 2, 1935 that inspired the devotion of the Marian pilgrimage during the month of May. Mass will be followed by a guided walking tour of Avila, the Medieval walled-city and birthplace of St. Teresa of Jesus, reformer of the Carmelite Order and Doctor of the Church. From Avila, travel to Segovia to enjoy free time for lunch and to take in the views of the Alcazar Castle, the ancient Roman aqueduct, and the Cathedral of Segovia. After lunch, visit the Carmelite Monastery and the tomb of St. John of the Cross, co-reformer of the Carmelite Order and Doctor of the Church. On October 6, 1932, during a retreat at the Carmelite Monastery, St. Josemaria was praying in the chapel of St. John of the Cross and was inwardly moved to invoke the three archangels and the three apostles Saints Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, and Saints Peter, Paul, and John. S T. J O S E M A R I A I N S T I T U T E The aim of Opus Dei is the holiness of each one of its members All who come to Opus Dei must come with the determination to become saints in spite of everything that is, in spite of their own miseries, their personal short comings I think that holiness attracts holiness, and I pray to God that in Opus Dei there will always be this profound connection, this life of faith... My one and only recipe is this: to be saints, to want to become saints, with personal sanctity. ST.
