Discipleship Journal, July/August. 1988, 50. 10 40% of the people in the United States would claim to be born again Christian, but only 7% say that it makes any difference in the way they live. George Barna¹ Does this statistic startle you? Would you be one of the 93% of professing Christians that say their belief in Christ wouldn t affect the way they live? The Christians who state this, do they really know who Jesus is? In our study of the 2nd article in our Statement Of Faith, we realized that God s nature, character, and work are indeed worthy of pursuit and worship. But, the Bible doesn't stop there! We need to ask ourselves, Who is Jesus? What part does Jesus play in the Bible? And then, What difference does this make to me? This leads us to the 3rd article in our Statement Of Faith which states, We believe that Jesus Christ is true God and true man, having been conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He died on the cross, a sacrifice for our sins, according to the Scriptures. Further, He arose bodily from the dead, ascended into heaven, where at the right hand of the Majesty on High, He now is our High Priest and Advocate. Often, when we think of Jesus we think of Him in terms only of when He was on earth. Or, we think of Jesus in reference to what He has done, in the past! It is imperative for us to think of Jesus as who He is, not just what He has done or who He was when He was on earth. We must understand essential truths about who Jesus is, and then, we must ask the question, So What? In essence all Scripture is the story of Jesus. The entire Bible tells the story of God s redeeming plan for His people. 3

It is important to realize that the story of Jesus does not begin in the pages of the New Testament. Jesus story begins in eternity past and continues through eternity future. In our endeavor to understand who Christ is, we need to understand that, although we are attempting to understand Christ fully, He is much more than what is expressed in a particular time or particular event. In this booklet we will be looking at Jesus in His person and in His work. 16:24-27). To neglect or to reject Him is foolishness (Hebrews 2:3). QUESTIONS 1. Did Jesus claim to be God? (Consider reading the Gospel of John looking for the seven I am statements of Jesus and the seven signs that John gives) HIS PERSON ETERNAL GOD The greatest controversy surrounding Jesus is over his nature. Is He simply a great religious leader, or is He unique in all of history? If He is simply a great man or a great teacher, then His teachings are equal to other great teachers and leaders of history. But, if as many claim, He is indeed God, then His teaching has absolute authority and is unique from all other s. It is this question then, that turns out to be all important. 1. Jesus is eternal Jesus Christ did not come into being at the time of His birth here on earth. One of the attributes of God is that He is eternal, which means that He has always existed and always will. He has no beginning nor end. The Bible teaches that Jesus is eternal. In John 1:1,2 it says, In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He (Jesus) was with God in the beginning. Furthermore, John 1:14 says, The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. 4 2. What difference does it make if Jesus indeed made that claim? 3. What do other biblical authors claim about Jesus? 4. How significant is the Bible s claim to be the only way to God? (John 14:6; Acts 4:12; 1 Timothy 2:5) 5. If that is true, what is the necessary response? 9

Colossians 4:5; Titus 2:14; 1 Peter 1:18; 2 Peter 2:1; 1 John 2:2, 4:10; Hebrews 9:11-15; Revelation 5:9, 14: 3-4 ) RISEN LORD 1. Risen Bodily John 20:14-17, Matthew 28:9-10, Luke 24:34, John 20: 26-29, 21:1-23, 1 Corinthians 15:1-20 2. Ascended into heaven Luke 24:50-53, Romans 8:34, 14:9-10, Ephesians 4:7-8, Hebrews 9:23-28, Revelation 1:9-18 3. High Priest/Advocate Jesus work on our behalf did not end on the cross. To be sure the purchase was completed, evidenced by the fact that Jesus now is seated in heaven at the right hand of the Father, He now is our constant advocate and representative in heaven. 4. Personal mediator Romans 8:34-35; 1 Timothy 2:5; Hebrews 2:14-18, 4:14-5:10, 7:20-25, 8:6, 9:11-22 5. Coming King Jesus is coming again and will set up his kingdom for ever. (Matthew 24:1-25:46, 26:64; Luke 21:5-36; Acts So What? 1:4-11; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-5:11; Titus 2:11-14; Hebrews 1:8-14) If Jesus is God, then He is not just another religious leader. If Jesus is God, then what He says is valid. If what He said (claimed) is not valid then He is not God, nor is He a good teacher. What Jesus does (did) only matters because of who He is. If, because of who He is, He is the perfect savior, then He is the only savior. If God gave His son, then we needed a savior. If He is the only savior, then being rightly related to Him is the most significant thing in life (Matthew 8 For more verses on Jesus eternal nature see, Micah 5:2, Habakkuk 1:12, Isaiah 9:6, John 1:1-16, John 8:58 with Exodus 3:14-15, Philippians 2:6-7 and Colossians 1:16. FULLY GOD Not only does the Bible state that Jesus is eternal, it also demonstrates that He is fully God in a number of ways. 1. Jesus claimed to be God Exodus 3:14-15; Matthew 22:41-45; John 8:58, 18:5; Revelation 1:8, 17-18 2. Jesus demonstrated the attributes of God Omniscience Mark 2:8; John 1:48; John 2:24-25 Omnipotence Matthew 28:18; Philippians 3:21 Omnipresence Matthew 18:20, 28:20; Ephesians 1:23 3. Jesus did the works of God Power over nature He turned water into wine (John 2:9-10) He calmed the storm (Mark 4:37-41) He walked on water (Matthew 14:25-29) Power over life and death He healed the sick (Matthew 14:14) Raised the dead (John 11:38-44) Was raised Himself (Matthew 28:1-6) Power in the Spiritual realm Made judgments (John 5:27) Forgave sins (Mark 2:1-12) Would send the Holy Spirit (John 15:26) 4. Jesus is worshipped as God by men and angels Matthew 14:33; Luke 19:37-40; John 20:28; Philippians 2:10-11; Hebrews 1:3-13; Revelation 5:19 5

6. Jesus is the fulfillment of prophecy Luke 24:25-27, 44-49 7. Jesus is called God by New Testament writers Matthew 1:23; John 1:1-16, 20:31; Romans 9:5; Titus 2:13 Hebrews 1:3, 1:8; James 2:1; Revelation 19:16 PERFECT HUMANITY Not only was Jesus Eternal God, He was perfect in His humanity. Jesus was the only human who walked on Earth who was without sin. 1. Without Sin (Matthew 3:15, 4:1-11 Mark 1:12-13, Luke 4:1-13, Romans 5:18-21, 2 Corinthians 15:45, Hebrews 7:26-28, 1 Peter 3:18) Jesus was born of a virgin. The virgin birth of Christ is very significant. For Jesus to be the perfect sacrifice for the sins of the world, He had to be without sin. The Bible teaches that the sin nature is passed down through each generation from the fathers. Jesus was born of a virgin without a sin nature. The Bible says in Matthew 1:18 that the baby Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit. This also is an indication of Christ s uniqueness and deity. He is not just another religious teacher or prophet. (Genesis 3:15, Isaiah 7:10-16, Matthew 1:18-23, Luke 1:26-28, Romans 1:3-4, 1 Corinthians 15:45-49, Galatians 4:4) Not only was it imperative that Jesus be born without a sin nature, He had to live a sinless life. 2. Absolutely human (John 1:14, Romans 8:3-4, Galatians 4:4, Philippians 2:5-11, Hebrews 2:14-18, 4:15) Christ s humanity is also very significant. Since it is man who is guilty of sin and the consequences of sin is death, (Genesis 3:3, Romans 6:23) a perfect human sacrifice was necessary to satisfy God s righteous judgment (a topic we will discuss later in statement 6 of our Statement 6 of Faith). Please understand that what Christ does is totally dependant on who He is. If He is not absolute deity and perfect humanity then His sacrifice for our sins is meaningless. What Christ has done and continues to do then is significant only because of who He is, completely God and perfect humanity. The following attributes describe the works of Christ, what He has, is, and will be doing. CREATOR/SUSTAINER For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. Colossians 1:16-17 1. Perfect Sacrifice HIS WORK REDEEMER (Only Savior/Christ) Chosen before time Ephesians 1:4, 2 Timothy1:9, 1 Peter 1:20 Totally unique Acts 4:12, John 14:16 Only Sufficient Sacrifice for our sins Because of Christ s deity and His perfect humanity His death is accepted as the substitutionary sacrifice for sin. (Matthew 20:28; Mark 10:45; Romans 4:25; 2 Corinthians 5:21; Galatians 1:4; 1 Timothy 2:5,6; Hebrews 9:28) The Bible Speaks of Christ s death as buying us back or reconciling us to God. (Romans 3:25-26; 1 Corinthians 6:20; 7:23; Galatians 3:13, 4:5; Ephesians 5:16; 7
