Volume 22, Number 31 July 24th, 2016 God Hears Us When We Pray According To His Will by Some of the wisest men in Bible history spent much time in prayer, and the scriptures make it plain that this pleased God. There are, however, some prayers our Father will not hear: Some things are not appropriate to ask of Him, and Jesus described the Pharisee of Luke 18 as unjustified in his prayers. Peter urged us to cast [y]our cares on him, for he careth for you, in 1 Peter 5:7, and Paul wrote in 1 Thessalonians 5:17 that we should pray without ceasing. Christians ought to heed the words of Tennyson, who wrote More things are wrought by prayer than this world dreams of; wherefore, let thy voice rise like a fountain, day and night. We should also realize, however, that our prayers must conform to His will for them to be pleasing to Him; otherwise, our effort in prayer is wasted. For God to hear our prayers, they must agree with His will as it relates to the things for which we ought to pray. John wrote that, this is the boldness which we have toward him, that, if we ask anything according to his will, he heareth us (1 John 5:14), and so emphasized the importance of knowing the boundaries of what we may ask of Him. In James 4:3, the inspired penman notes that He will not provide us supplies for SIN! Our Lord s model prayer gives a good sampling of things for which it IS appropriate to pray; for the Father s will to be done, for our daily needs, for forgiveness of sins (as we forgive!), and for deliverance from evil. It is not fitting for us to ask God s blessings with a sinful motive (Psalm 66:18), or in order that we might misuse them! We likewise should pay attention to how we pray, if we want to Father to hear our prayers: His word shows us the qualities He looks for and expects in our prayers. The example of Daniel (Daniel 6:10) and the words of Paul (Romans 12:12) show that regularity in prayer pleases Him, and in Ephesians 6:18 we see that prayers (sincerely and properly offered) are acceptable at any time (there is no specified time of prayer in the scriptures). The Father also looks for forgiveness in us, Mark 11:25, and for faithfulness (James 1:6). James is very plain in stating that if we pray faithlessly (that is, without any conviction that our Creator will hear and respond to our entreaties) then He surely won t! As we examine the scriptures, we needn t go very far before it becomes clear that there is a pattern or formula our prayers should follow if we want them to be accepted by God. In every example, prayers in the scriptures are directed TO the Father. This is also the instruction Jesus gave, Luke 11:2. There is no example of anyone praying to Jesus or the Holy Spirit (much less to apostles, saints, etc.)! Jesus, by His authority as our High Priest and through His propitiatory death for us enables us to approach the Father personally: Our prayers are thus directed to the Father, THROUGH the Son! In John 15:16 & 16:23, He instructed the disciples to ask in my name (i.e., by HIS authority). There is no authorization in the scriptures for any prayer other than one that is offered to the Father in the name of (through) the Son. Let s remember TO Whom we pray, THROUGH Whom we are to pray, for what we should (or shouldn t) pray, and what our attitude should be in prayer!

What Do You Believe About The Bible? by Larry Fitzgerald I can t believe that s true! expressed a man in disbelief. The man was a preacher for a certain religious group. He went to a seminary. He was ordained by his denomination. Confessed Christ as Lord. Professed to believe in the Bible. But when his preconceived notions about the Bible were shown to be false, his only defense was, I can t believe that s true. This actually happened. The doctrine in question was the idea that we are saved by faith alone. It was pointed out to this denominational teacher that the Bible uses that phrase only once. It is found in James 2:24, You see that a man is saved by works and not by faith alone. This brings up a serious question. If we are truly trying to follow Christ s example living like Christ (1 Peter 2:21), shouldn t we have the same attitude as Christ did toward the Bible? What did Christ believe about the Bible? Here is what Christ believed about the Scriptures. 1. Christ believed that the Bible s true author is the Holy Spirit (Matthew 22:43; Mark 12:36). 2. Christ believed that the miracles found in the Bible were true, they actually happened and were caused by God. Some examples of this are found in Matthew 12:39-41, 19:4-6; Mark 12:26; Luke 17:26-27. 3. Christ believed that the Scriptures were to be used to interpret the Scriptures. He quoted Moses to interpret Psalms (Matthew 4:6-7 compared with Psalms 91:11-12 and Deuteronomy 6:16). 4. Christ believed that Scripture cannot be broken even to suit some pet doctrine or twisted in some way to justify a commonly held belief (John 10:35). 5. Christ did not believe that the Holy Spirit gave each person his own special interpretation. It did not matter how sincere the person was in his belief. If he was wrong, he was wrong. He was in error because he did not know the Scriptures or the power of God (Matthew 22:23-33; Mark 12:18-27; Luke 20:27-38). 6. Obeying Christ s commands (found in the Bible) is a major sign of love. If you love Him, says Christ, you will keep His commandments (John 14:15). Now, the question is, do you have the same attitude toward the Bible as Christ did?
