Welcome in the name of Jesus Christ! We thank God that you have joined us this morning for worship. If you are visiting with us, we thank God you are here and pray our worship together will be a mutual blessing. If you are looking for a church home, we hope Abiding Savior can meet your needs. Please introduce yourself to one of the Pastors. We ask both members and visitors to kindly fill out attendance cards and pass them to the center aisle. The ushers will gather them during the Sermon Hymn which follows the Children s Message. Feel free to add a prayer request for the Pastor to include in the congregational prayer. We love children here at Abiding Savior. Parents are encouraged to sit in the front pews so that young children can see what is happening during worship. If you should want to make use of our cry room or nursery, please ask one of our ushers for directions. Ministers Rev. Dr. Thomas Rogers... Senior Pastor Rev. Glenn Lucas... Associate Pastor Rev. OPENING CONGREGATIONAL SONG What A Beautiful Name You were the Word at the beginning, One with God the Lord Most High. Your hidden glory in creation, Now revealed in You our Christ. What a beautiful Name it is, what a beautiful Name it is. The Name of Jesus Christ my King. What a beautiful Name it is, Nothing compares to this. What a beautiful Name it is, The Name of Jesus. You didn t want heaven without us, So Jesus You brought heaven down. My sin was great, Your love was greater, What could separate us now. What a wonderful Name it is, What a wonderful Name it is. The Name of Jesus Christ my King. What a wonderful Name it is, Nothing compares to this. What a wonderful Name it is, The Name of Jesus. What a wonderful Name it is, The Name of Jesus. Death could not hold You, The veil tore before You. You silence the boast of sin and grave. The heavens are roaring, The praise of Your glory, For You are raised to life again. You have no rival, You have no equal. Now and forever God You reign. Yours is the kingdom, Yours is the glory, Yours is the Name above all names. What a powerful Name it is, What a powerful Name it is. The Name of Jesus Christ my King. What a powerful Name it is, Nothing can stand against. What a powerful Name it is, The name of Jesus. INVOCATION Pastor: In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen! Worshippers are invited to kneel for the Confession and Absolution. Those who desire not to kneel may sit or stand. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Pastor: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Pastor: Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen. Pastor: In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for His sake God forgives us all our sins. To those who believe in Jesus Christ He gives power to become the children of God and bestows on them the Holy Spirit. May the Lord, Who has begun this good work in us, bring it to completion in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen. FIRST READING ACTS 2:42-47 47 And they devoted themselves to the apostles teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. And all who believed were together and had all things in common. And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved. Reader: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 3

CONGREGATIONAL SONG How Deep the Father s Love for Us How deep the Father s love for us, How vast beyond all measure That He should give His only Son To make a wretch His treasure. How great the pain of searing loss, The Father turns His face away As wounds which mar the chosen One, Bring many sons to glory. Behold the Man upon a cross, My sin upon His shoulders Ashamed I hear my mocking voice, Call out among the scoffers. It was my sin that held Him there Until it was accomplished His dying breath has brought me life I know that it is finished. I will not boast in anything No gifts, no power, no wisdom But I will boast in Jesus Christ His death and resurrection. Why should I gain from His reward? I cannot give an answer. But this I know with all my heart His wounds have paid my ransom. Why should I gain from His reward? I cannot give an answer. But this I know with all my heart His wounds have paid my ransom. CCLI #1558110 EPISTLE READING 1 PETER 2:19-25 25 For this is a gracious thing, when, mindful of God, one endures sorrows while suffering unjustly. For what credit is it if, when you sin and are beaten for it, you endure? But if when you do good and suffer for it you endure, this is a gracious thing in the sight of God. For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly. He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls. Reader: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Please stand for the Reading of the Holy Gospel. THE HOLY GOSPEL JOHN 10:1-10 "Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door but climbs in by another way, that man is a thief and a robber. But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. To him the gatekeeper opens. The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. 4

A stranger they will not follow, but they will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers." This figure of speech Jesus used with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them. So Jesus again said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. Reader: This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to You O Christ. Worshippers are invited to stand and share the peace of the Lord with each other. Children can come down to the chancel steps for the children s message. CHILDREN HILDREN S MESSAGE 9:30 a.m. Children going to Sunday School will be met at the back of the church in the center aisle. Prayer and member/guest cards will be collected during the singing of the following song: CONGREGATIONAL SONG Forever (We Sing Hallelujah) The moon and stars, they wept, the morning sun was dead; The Savior of the world was fallen. His body on the cross, His blood poured out for us; The weight of ev'ry curse upon Him. One final breath He gave as heaven looked away; The Son of God was laid in darkness. A battle in the grave, the war on death was waged; The pow'r of hell forever broken. The ground began to shake, the stone was rolled away; His perfect love could not be overcome. Now, death, where is your sting? Our resurrected King has rendered you defeated. Refrain: Now, forever He is glorified; Forever He is lifted high. And forever He is risen; He is alive and He is alive. Sing Twice We sing hallelujah, we sing hallelujah, we sing hallelujah; The Lamb has overcome. We sing hallelujah, we sing hallelujah, we sing hallelujah; The Lamb has overcome. We sing hallelujah, we sing hallelujah, we sing hallelujah; The Lamb has overcome. Refrain Twice 5

CCLI #7001228 THE SERMON REV EV. TOM ROGERS APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the Communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. GATHERING OF OUR TITHES AND OFFERINGS God doesn t need our money, but in His grace He gives us the privilege to be stewards of everything He has entrusted to our care. We can do more together than separately. As one body in Christ, our congregation has agreed to offer our first fruits to support ministries and missions that enable us to communicate Christ s love to everyone, everywhere; and our love for Him. Your sacrificial gift enables this holy work. CONGREGATIONAL MUSICAL OFFERING You Led Me to the Cross You led me to the cross, and I saw the face of mercy in that place of love. You opened up my eyes to believe Your sweet salvation where I d been so blind. Refrain: Now that I m living in Your all forgiving love, My every road leads to the cross. Jesus, keep me near the cross. I won t forget the love You ve shown. Savior, teach me of the cross; I won t forget the love, I won t forget the love You ve shown. And there s an empty tomb, That tells me of Your resurrection and my life in You. The stone lies rolled away, nothing but those folded grave clothes Where Your body lay. THE PRAYERS Pastor: Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs. Pastor: Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer. After each petition the prayer concludes: Pastor: Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend ourselves and all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy through Jesus Christ, our Lord. We pray together, Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done d on earth as it is in heaven; Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; And lead us not into temptation; But deliver us from evil. For Thine is the Kingdom and the Power and the Glory for f ever and ever. Amen. BENEDICTION Pastor: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious unto you. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace. Amen! CLOSING CONGREGATIONAL SONG Resurrecting The head that once was crowned with thorns is crowned with glory now. The Savior knelt to wash our feet; Now at His feet we bow. The one who wore our sin and shame Now robed in majesty. The ra-di-ance of perfect love Now shines for all to see. Chorus: Your name, Your name is victory. All praise will rise to Christ our King. Repeat The fear that held us now gives way to Him who is our peace. His final breath upon the cross is now alive in me. Chorus By Your Spirit I will rise from the ashes of defeat. In Your name I come alive to declare Your victory. Repeat The tomb where soldiers watched in vain was borrowed for three days. His body there would not remain. Our God has robbed the grave. Our God has robbed the grave. Chorus 7

Serve the Lord. Thanks be to God! Lay Leadership Training ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ I would encourage you all to participate in the Lay Leadership Training program offered through the Pacific Southwest District (aka the Deacon program) of the Missouri Synod Lutheran Church. It is a worthwhile journey, even (or especially) if you have no idea what part it could play in your life. For me it was a journey of discovery, both about myself and my faith. And you have the opportunity to meet with Pastors and University Professors of all walks-of-life, all with different perspectives on what it means to be a Lutheran. The courses cover material from Doctrine, to Homiletics (preaching), to Word and Worship. If any of this sounds remotely interesting to you, please come and to talk to me. You can always corner me when you see me at church, or drop me a line at hhellfeld@cox.net, or call at 949 367-6682. For the do-it-yourself-ers: here is the link to the Pacific Southwest District lay leadership web site http://psd-lcms.fhcaleb.com/layleadership.php. May you be as blessed by this program as I was.
