Christ the King Sunday November 19 & 20, 2016 5:00 p.m. & 8:30 a.m. AS WE GATHER This last Sunday in the Church Year is called Christ the King Sunday. But as we look at today s Gospel Reading, Jesus doesn t seem very regal or royal from the cross. Pilate mocks Jesus with the inscription This is the King of the Jews. Jesus hangs and dies beaten, bruised, and bloody. Yet, Jesus is King even from the cross. Going to the cross, Jesus is remarkably in control, warning the daughters of Jerusalem, praying, Father, forgive them, and extending salvation to the repentant thief. That thief must have taken notice of Jesus kingship because he pleads, Remember me when You come into Your kingdom (Luke 23:42). And so we pray: Crucified King Jesus, remember us, and keep us in the faith until You return to reign. PRELUDE Crown Him with Many Crowns setting by Jeffrey Blersch The congregation turns and faces the cross as the procession approaches the altar reminding us that Christ leads us into the presence of God. PREPARATION Please stand ENTRANCE HYMN 525 Crown Him with Many Crowns 1

INVOCATION Leader: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Leader: Since we have such a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus Christ our Lord, let us with confidence draw near to God, that we may receive mercy and find grace in time of need. Have mercy on us, O God, according to Your lovingkindness. In Your great mercy, wash away our iniquity and cleanse us from our sin. Create in us clean hearts, O God, and renew a right spirit within us. Do not remove us from Your presence; do not take Your Spirit away. Restore to us the joy of Your salvation, and sustain us with Your Spirit. Amen. Leader: God is merciful and gracious, granting forgiveness through Jesus Christ to all who confess their sin. As a (called and ordained) minister of the church of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sin, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. 2

HYMN OF PRAISE 815 All Praise to Thee, for Thou, O King Divine The Church Pension Fund. Used by permission. Public domain PRAYER OF THE DAY Leader: The Lord be with you. And also with you. Pastor: Let us pray. Almighty and everlasting God, it is Your will to restore all things to Your beloved Son, whom You anointed King of all creation. Unite all the people of the earth, now divided by the power of sin, under the glorious and gentle rule of our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. 3

EXCHANGE OF PEACE WELCOME WORD OLD TESTAMENT READING Malachi 3:13 18 (The Lord hears and remembers.) 13 "You have said harsh things against me," says the LORD. "Yet you ask, 'What have we said against you?' 14 "You have said, 'It is futile to serve God. What did we gain by carrying out his requirements and going about like mourners before the LORD Almighty? 15 But now we call the arrogant blessed. Certainly the evildoers prosper, and even those who challenge God escape.'" 16 Then those who feared the LORD talked with each other, and the LORD listened and heard. A scroll of remembrance was written in his presence concerning those who feared the LORD and honored his name. 17 "They will be mine," says the LORD Almighty, "in the day when I make up my treasured possession. I will spare them, just as in compassion a man spares his son who serves him. 18 And you will again see the distinction between the righteous and the wicked, between those who serve God and those who do not. Lector: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 4

EPISTLE Colossians 1:13 20 (The Lord has transferred us to the kingdom of His Son.) 13 For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. 15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. 19 For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross. Lector: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. ANTHEM 8:30 Declare Your Maker s Praise Lloyd Larson Please stand Leader: The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the twenty-third chapter. Glory to You, O Lord. HOLY GOSPEL Luke 23:27 43 ( Jesus, remember me when You come into Your kingdom. ) 27 A large number of people followed him, including women who mourned and wailed for him. 28 Jesus turned and said to them, "Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep for yourselves and for your children. 29 For the time will come when you will say, 'Blessed are the barren women, the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!' 30 Then " 'they will say to the mountains, "Fall on us!" and to the hills, "Cover us!"' (continued on next page) 5

31 For if men do these things when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?" 32 Two other men, both criminals, were also led out with him to be executed. 33 When they came to the place called the Skull, there they crucified him, along with the criminals--one on his right, the other on his left. 34 Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing." And they divided up his clothes by casting lots. 35 The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him. They said, "He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Christ of God, the Chosen One." 36 The soldiers also came up and mocked him. They offered him wine vinegar 37 and said, "If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself." 38 There was a written notice above him, which read: this is the king of the jews. 39 One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: "Aren't you the Christ? Save yourself and us!" 40 But the other criminal rebuked him. "Don't you fear God," he said, "since you are under the same sentence? 41 We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong." 42 Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom." 43 Jesus answered him, "I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise." Leader: This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to You, O Christ. HYMN OF THE WORD 513 The Clouds of Judgment Gather PROCLAMATION OF THE WORD The Time Is Short The Message Is Urgent 2 Corinthians 6:2 6

Please stand NICENE CREED I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. OFFERING Praise My Soul the King of Heaven arranged by Marilynn Ham Please stand PRAYER OF THE CHURCH Leader: Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs. + + + Special Intercessions + + + Each concluding: L: Lord, in Your mercy, P: hear our prayer. Leader: Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend ourselves and all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy, through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. 7

SACRAMENT In the Lord s Supper we receive Christ s body and blood in and with the bread and wine. The two great blessings of the Lord s Supper are the forgiveness of sins and strength to live an improved Christian life. In response to the Lord s command we are to examine ourselves privately prior to partaking of the Sacrament. There are three basic questions on which we should examine ourselves, all of which we should be able to answer in the affirmative if we are to partake of the Sacrament worthily: 1) Am I truly sorry for my sins? 2) Do I believe Jesus Christ is my Savior? 3) Do I promise with God s help to live a Christian life? If you agree with the above statement, we invite you to the Sacrament. PREFACE Pastor: Pastor: Pastor: Pastor: The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give Him thanks and praise. It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, for You sent Your only Son to die for the sins of the world and rise again to new life. You also promise that He will return as King in glory on the Last Day to raise us to everlasting life. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and singing: 8

SANCTUS LORD S PRAYER Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. 9

WORDS OF INSTITUTION Pastor: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: Take, eat; this is my body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of me. In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: Drink of it, all of you; this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. PEACE OF THE LORD Pastor: The peace of the Lord be with you always. And also with you. AGNUS DEI 10

If you wish to take communion in the pew, please raise your hand when the communion assistant comes down the aisle. When the wine is distributed, individual glasses will be offered first, then the common cup. Communicants may take whichever is preferred. If taking the individual glass, please keep the glass visible so that the communion assistant with the common cup will know who has already communed. Non-alcoholic wine is available in the center of the communion tray for those who have a sensitivity to the alcohol in wine. DISTRIBUTION HYMNS 537 Beautiful Savior 905 Come, Thou Almighty King 793 Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven Please stand PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING Pastor: Let us pray. We give thanks to You, almighty God, that You have refreshed us through this salutary gift, and we implore You that of Your mercy You would strengthen us through the same in faith toward You and in fervent love toward one another; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. BENEDICTION Pastor: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and + give you peace. Amen. 11
