Why did Edward change the Church? Because Edward was only nine years old, his advisors told him what to do, think, and say. They were Protestant and they encouraged him to make many changes to religion. Edward himself was also a Protestant and had been raised by Protestants. He read 12 chapters of the Bible every day! Thomas Cranmer was one of Edward s advisors. He was also the Archbishop of Canterbury, and he was a very strong Protestant. He was the one who had persuaded Henry to start a new Church of England. He wanted Edward to make even more changes. What did Edward do? A new prayer book was introduced. Services were now said in English, not Latin. The Mass was ended and replaced with the Protestant Holy Communion service. According to this service the bread and wine represented the body and blood of Jesus Christ, but did not actually become the body and blood of Jesus Christ, as it does in Mass. Holy communion was a service of remembrance, not a sacrifice. Churches were changed. Stained-glass windows were smashed and replaced with simple windows; the walls were whitewashed; and decorations were taken away. Priests were told to dress in simple clothes, not fine robes. Priests could now get married. You could no longer buy your way into heaven.
