January 13, 2013 2 Mission Statement: St. Francis of Assisi Parish is a Christ-centered family of believers, celebrating Christ alive in our lives through the inspiration of the Gospel, church teachings and traditions and the Sacraments. We are sensitive to the spiritual and temporal needs of God s people, acknowledging their uniqueness and dignity and are dedicated to reaching out and serving them through prayer, liturgical celebrations and social ministries. Guided by the Holy Spirit and nourished by the Holy Eucharist, we welcome all people with, respect and compassion. We are vigilant in protecting the rights of the most vulnerable. In the tradition of our patron, St. Francis of Assisi, we put the good news of the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ into action. January 13, 2013 3 In this bulletin you will find the Summary Financial Report for our last full fiscal year ending August 31, 2012. These numbers are taken directly from our financial report to the diocese as compiled by our diocesan-sponsored bookkeeper and accepted by the Finance Office in Rockville Centre. You will notice the $42,000 surplus; however we were fortunate to have had a very mild winter (virtually no snow removal expenses and we were able to conduct two carnival feasts). If circumstances were different (and we normally have only one feast), our surplus might have disappeared! We need everyone on deck! Thank you for your strong support and also for the Christmas Collection (the total will be published next week - we hope to do a little better than last year). Keep up the good work. Also, please pray and consider a modest increase in your Sunday Offering. Income tends to be flat and expenses do go up. Last week the tractor trailer truck from General Utilities pulled in and emptied his tank into ours and left us with a bill for $15,000. Hopefully we will get us through most of the winter on this refill; but it is easy to see where the money goes! Thank you again - I know you are committed to making St. Francis a success as a parish community and a fiscally sound entity! Join Rev. Peter F. Kaczmarek Pastor of St. Francis of Assisi on a Pilgrimage to Rome, Padre Pio, Assisi and more! Rome, Montecassino, Pietrelcina, San Giovanni Rotondo (Padre Pio), Monte Sant'Angel (St. Michael), Loreto (Holy House), Lanciano (Eucharis c Miracle) & Assisi (St. Francis) February 18-27, 2013 $2,899 from New York Our price is based out of New York, you may depart from your local airport www.206tours.com/airports www.pilgrimages.com/revpeter

January 13, 2013 4 Time, Talent & Treasure Fostering Stewardship as a way of life (Regular Sunday Offertory) Last Sunday s weekly offering: $10,098.00 Last Year s Sunday offering: $10,330.50 Thanks for Giving First Fruits & Taking a Step!!! Bulletin Reflection Jesus, whom God called my beloved Son, is also the servant of whom Isaiah speaks in the first reading. We who are baptized in Christ must follow His example and use our time and resources in the service of God and neighbor. Living Stewardship We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who answer their baptismal call to belong more deeply by placing their gifts and resources, their very selves, at God s service not only in the Church but in the world. January 13: The Baptism of the Lord After Jesus was baptized, he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and a voice was heard This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased. As we give to the poor, we also can hear these same words. As you help those who are suffering, know in your heart the truth of the words you are my beloved in whom I am well pleased. January 13, 2013 6 the YOU CAT is available at the St. Francis Port-a-Store We are looking for volunteers to help man the port-a-store during Masses. Please call the rectory if you can help! CALLED TO SERVE For many weeks now, we have been celebrating the appearance of the divine presence in human form. As a child, he came to Mary and Joseph, was seen by the shepherds, and then by some wandering magi from the East. Today we celebrate another showing, later in time, to a group gathered at the Jordan River. John hesitated to baptize Jesus, whom he recognized as "one mightier than I." But he did as Jesus asked, and the "Holy Spirit descended" and heaven's voice spoke to Jesus, "You are my beloved Son." Jesus was beginning his public life of teaching and service. Soon he would start calling others to join him. Peter was one of the first to be called by Jesus. In today's second reading, he announces the heart of the message, "peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all." Peter was called, and you and I are called to spread that message and to serve God's word. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co. January 13, 2013 7 The way we came to know love was that He laid down His life for us; so we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers. If someone who has worldly means sees a brother in need and refuses him compassion, how can the love of God remain in him? Children, let us love not in word or speech but in deed and truth. 1 John 3: 16-18 RESPECT LIFE NEWS SEMINARY of the IMMACULATE CONCEPTION offers the following graduate degrees MASTER of ARTS in THEOLOGY MASTER of ARTS in PASTORAL STUDIES SPRING SEMESTER BEGINS JAN. 28, 2013 REGISTRATION CLOSES JAN. 22, 2013 Courses in Church History, Liturgy, Worship, Leadership skills and exciting new electives. Some pro-life thoughts: I do not hesitate to proclaim before you and before the world that all human life from the moment of conception and throughout all subsequent stages is sacred, because human life is created in the image and likeness of God and when God gives life, it is forever. Pope John Paul II Roe vs. Wade, the court case that legalized abortion 38 years ago, was a declaration of war on defenseless baby boys and girls in the womb whose only crime is that they exist. If it be necessary to go against the current of what is sometimes being thought and said on all sides, then let us never grow weary of repeating it-all human life must be absolutely respected; in fact, abortion and euthanasia are murder. Pope Paul VI Our St. Francis of Assisi Baby Corner especially needs Huggies, Luv s, and Pampers diapers sizes 4, 5, and 6, unscented baby wipes, unscented shampoo, unscented baby wash, stage 2 and 3 baby food, and formula, baby coupons, and money for formula. We thank Our Lord through the intercession of Our Lady of Guadalupe and St. Francis for all the blessings bestowed upon our Baby Corner. Need assistance? Wish to join our St. Francis of Assisi Respect Life Committee? Please call our rectory at 631-757-7435. Intercessions for Life: January 13, 2013 Feast of the Baptism Of The Lord For all Christians: That by virtue of our baptism, we may be strengthened in the Holy Spirit to courageously defend the lives of the unborn; We pray to the Lord. Word of Life: Those who insufficiently value human life and, in consequence, support among other things the liberalization of abortion, perhaps do not realize that in this way they are proposing the pursuit of a false peace. The flight from responsibility, which degrades human persons, and even more so the killing of a defenseless and innocent being, will never be able to produce happiness or peace. ~Pope Benedict, XVI. Message for the World Day of Peace, January 1, 2013 The Life Center of Long Island at 631-243-2373. Call for help with a crisis pregnancy, healing after an abortion, or to donate baby equipment. Please do not bring cribs, car seats, etc. into our Church; rather call the Life Center to make arrangements. The Life Center s Life Line is open 24 hours, 7 days a week at 631-243-0066. Please continue to pray each day for our precious babies born and unborn and their parents!!! Pray the rosary for the conversion of America s heart to end abortion.
