Members of the Board of Trustees (BOT) and the Executive Committee (EC) ask for your forgiveness if we have hurt your feelings through our actions. Michhami Dukkadum to the Sakal Sangh.!!! Our Society is fortunate to have Shri Nautambhai Vakil during the Paryushan. Members are requested to participate in this once a year auspicious event for lectures and bhakti. JSGD is happy to inform all the tapasvis that they can do ekasana at the Temple during Paryushan. The Society thanks Bhartiben Doshi and Ushaben Vasani for leading this effort. Members wishing to do ekasana are requested to please write your name on the bulletin board. This will enable the volunteers to prepare adequate food for the tapasvis. A brief synopsis of some of the events held at the temple: Eleventh temple anniversary (6/12-6/14) was celebrated for 3 days with Sh. Narendrabhai Nandu and his group. The event started with Snatra Puja in the morning and Arihant Atishay Vandnavali in the evening. The second day we saw Eighteen Abhishek Puja with many members bringing their Bhagwan from home to perform Eighteen Abhishek. The evening was the Jain Antakshari, for those who participated and attended was a moving experience. Last day, we had Dhwaja ceremony for the temple and Bhumati area. The enthusiasm and the commitment of pledges by members were overwhelming. Samaniji Charitra Prajnaji and Samaniji Unnata Pragyaji were also present during our anniversary program and provided a brief insight into the Jain Way of life through their lectures. Have released Cassettes and CD s on different religious topics and Melodious Bhajans. Regular speaker on religious topics in television channels. Written several articles on Jain religion, which is published in several reputable magazines such as Jankalyan, Sadhna. Topics to be covered during Paryushan Kalpasutra (Morning) Prayushan is one of the holiest Parve of Jainism. Normally, during the Paryushan Kalpasutra is read by Monks. But, when Monks are not available the translation is used. Pravachans are spread over the eight days of Prayushan. First three days we will cover Shravak/shravika s duties (such as five things to do during the Prayushan and eleven things to do during the whole year). Remaining five days we will cover ten Acharas (such as forgiveness, softness, simplicity, pureness, sacrifice, truthfullness, tap, aparigrh, saiyam and celibacy), ten Kalpa, five Kalayanaks, and Lord Mahavira s main 27 Bhav after samyagdarshan. Among the Agamic texts, Kalpa Sutra is eighth swadhyay of 4th Cheda sutras - Shri Dasha shrut skandh. Kalpasutra is a Jain ancient text containing the biographies of the last two Jain Tirthankaras, Parshvanath and Mahavirswami. It contains detailed life histories with illustrations. Adinath (or RishabhDev) and Neminath are two other Tirthankaras briefly mentioned in the text, The text also contains a list of monks from 527 BC to approximately 500 AD. It contains the code of conduct for behavior and organizational discipline to be observed by Monks. The first text was believed to be written by Bhadrabahu Swami. Samyagdarshan (Evening) This subject is enormously large to be covered in limited time. So at this time we will focus on good qualities (Guno) that will help us achieve Samyagdarshan quickly. First and for most goal of any shravak/shravika is to achieve Samyagdarshan. We will use these holidays to learn how achieve Samyagdarshan. Topic s discussion is based on original book Hitopdeshi Mala written by Param Pujya Prabhachandsuriji Maharaj about 700 years ago. In order to achieve Samyagdarshan one needs to develop 13 qualities (guno). These are : Faith in Religion, Do not engage in Condemned Work, Remove Mithyatave, Be Stable in Difficulties, Be Satisfied with what you have, Remove Kashay, Be Tolerance, Believe and be Happy in listening to Parmatma Vani, Become Pure, Never be Depressed. BOT CORNER MEMBER S INTEREST FREE LOAN We are happy to report that JSGD is in the process of reconciling member s interest free loans. We have returned the amount to members per their request. Some members requested their loans to be converted for future pledges. We have honored the wishes of members and are indebted to all those who provided the interest free loan when the monies were needed the most. Some of the members did not respond to our request yet. BOT will contact them. After the settlement of these loans we can proudly say we are now completely debt free. The BOT humbly extends its thanks to the members for supporting the Temple. SHATRUNJAY (PALITANA) AND SAMMETSHIKHARJI PATTS The two patts are ready to be shipped from India and is anticipated to set sail in next few days. The dimensions of both the patts are 9 ft. by 6 ft. and 3 inch in thickness. Pictures of these patts will be posted on the bulletin board very shortly. BOT is in the process of finalizing the installation date. More details will be announced during Paryushan. The Society would like to thank Chetanbhai and Smitaben Koradia for assisting in the shipment and custom clearance process in India. 2011 JAINA CONVENTION During the past few months JSGD was in the process of preparing the proposal to host the JAINA Convention in 2011. The exploratory committee under the leadership of the Co-Chairs Vastupalbhai Shah and Niranjanbhai Shah had worked tirelessly to prepare a thorough and excellent draft proposal. Due to the significant financial and volunteer commitment needed to host the convention the committee had made a decision to obtain the General Membership support during Paryushan prior to submitting the proposal. An extension from July 31 st to August 31 st was requested to enable us to accomplish this task during Paryushan. Unfortunately, JAINA was able to grant us the extension only until August 8th. Thus the committee has made a decision not to submit a proposal for the 2011 convention. However, due to the outstanding work that the exploratory committee has accomplished, it will be easier to explore the possibility of hosting the convention in 2013 or 2015. NOMINATION COMMITTEE BOT is happy to announce that Rohit R. Shah has gladly accepted to Chair the Nomination Committee. If you have any comments or suggestions please contact Vinay C. Shah (T: 248-641-5975) There will be points counting for various categories of Tapascharyas. Simple observance of Chauvihar on a given day will earn: ½ point. Chauvihar points will not be counted if it is attached to other Tapascharyas like Besanu Ekasanu, Ayambil or Upavas on same day. Observance of Besanu will earn: 2 points. Observance of Ekasanu or Ayambil will earn: 4 points Observance of Upavas will earn: 6 points. First requirement will be to have minimum 5 days of Tapascharyas (Upavas, Ekasanu, Ayambil or Besanu). Second requirement will be to have minimum of 16 points for the recognition. This means if some one observes 8 days with 8 Besanas he or she will earn 16 points (8x2). [Eligible for recognition]. If someone observes 1 Upavas and 2 Ekasanas he or she will earn 14 points (6x1 + 4x2). [Not eligible for recognition]. If someone observes 1 Upavas + 2 Ekasanas + 1 Besanu will earn 16 points (6x1 + 4X2 + 2x1). [Still Not Eligible for recognition due to count of only 4 days of Tapascharyas]. If someone observes 2 Upavas and 2 Ekasanas he or she will earn 20 points (6x2 + 4x2). [Still Not Eligible for recognition due to count of only 4 days of Tapascharyas]. The main reason of putting such restriction is to challenge for honest efforts and restrict overflow. Jain Society of Greater Detroit www.jain-temple.org Page 13 of 24

Ekasana at the Temple during Paryushan JSGD has organized daily Ekasana at the temple during Paryushan. Bharatiben Doshi and her team are coordinating the food preparation. All Tapasavis planning to do Ekasana are requested to follow the Guidelines below: Guidelines 1. Please provide your name and the days you will be doing Ekasana on the bulletin board at least 2 days in advance or call our Pujari, Pankajbhai (248-851 5246) to put your name. 2. Members are requested to bring their own plates, spoons, cups, etc. for Ekasana and should clean them and take them back. 3. No Boxed lunch will be provided to the members doing Ekasana at home. 4. On Swapna Darshan Day (August 22, 2009) only Swamivatsalya food will be served for Ekasana. If you are planning to do Ekasana on that day please RSVP at the temple website - http://www.jain-temple.org/rsvp.shtml 5. All seniors attending the morning program at temple during Paryushan are requested to take lunch at the temple. RSVP For Swapna Darashan Day (Saturday, August 22, 2009) It is not good to have too much food or too little food for the temple programs. Also prestigious volunteer efforts for food preparation go in vain based on inaccuracy involved with food planning. Based on our experience on Anniversary program, we have decided to start RSVP for all major programs involving Lunch at the temple. RSVP will give us good number to prepare food and reduces wastage of food, time, and money. Please submit your RSVP on temple website at http://www.jain-temple.org/rsvp.shtml if you are planning to attend Swamivatsalya on Swapna Darshan Day at Jain Temple on Saturday August 22, 2009. Non computer users can call Pankajbhai at 248-851-5246 for their RSVP. Guidelines to submit RSVP Submit one RSVP for a family by August 17 th 2009. No need to RSVP if you are not planning to attend. Having proper number of RSVPs greatly helps in food planning. Please spread the word to your friends and families and have them send in RSVP. We really appreciate your help. - Executive Committee Jain Vani Advertisement Rates We are taking new advertisements in Jain Vani. Invitation for Parna Samvatsari The day that comes only once a year after much preparation is known as Samvatsari. This is the day that arrives after the religious period of Samvotsar. In fact this festival is also called Paryushan. This period of samvotsar comes 50 days after and 70 days before the close of the chaturmas period. Sometimes the samvotsar may vary between 49 days after and 71 days before the close of the chaturmas or the four month period. What is Paryushan? The words paryusarg is an essence of the three words of "Pariupsaarg, vasdhatu and Anapratyey. Parisamantat samagrataya ushana vasana niwas literally translated means to get totally absorbed. To move away from the theory on to practice (implementation). In the historical guides this period culminates into only one major auspicious day but the significance of the seven days with elaborate preparations like stringent adherence to religious doctrines and abstinence preceding the Paryushan cannot be overlooked. In order to out beat the strong, one needs to summon up enough strength in the same way to overcome the invisible negative forces, one needs to involve him totally in the religious practices to draw the energy to withstand these forces. Symbolically this festival cannot be called the festival of only the Jains but of the entire human race. Samatsavari is the Last day of this festival & main Day. This day All Jains keep fasting. On Next day they break their fast which called as Parna. And this year following most fortunate families has the pleasure and honor to invite Sakal Sangh for Parna on August 24 th 2009 at 09:00 AM 1.
