Free Bible Study Notes on Genesis 28-31 Introduction: Having infuriated Esau by stealing the patriarchal blessing, Jacob needed to leave for a while. In chapters 28-31 Jacob travels to his relatives in Haran, having a pivotal encounter with God at Bethel on the way. Jacob enters into a personal covenant relationship with God at Bethel. Reaching Haran, Jacob begins to work for Laban, his uncle, and falls in love with Rachel, Laban's daughter. He later marries both of Laban's daughters. God helps Jacob to become wealthy while working with Laban's flocks. Tired of Laban's dishonesty and the jealousy of Laban's family, Jacob and his family slip away to return to Canaan. Laban pursues them but is warned by God not to harm them. Notes on Genesis 28-31: 28:1 - Do not marry a Canaanite - As we have seen earlier, the whole spirit of scripture is against a believer marrying a non-believer. See Deuteronomy 7:3, 4. 28:2 - Paddan Aram - In Mesopotamia where Abraham had once lived. 28:4 - blessing given to Abraham - See Genesis 12:1-2 The LORD had said to Abram, Leave your country, your people and your father's household and go to the land I will show you. I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. As far as Isaac and Jacob knew, they would not see each other for a very long time if ever. Also there was probably little communication between the distantly separated parts of the family. 28:8 - Esau then realized - Apparently, though Isaac and Rebekah had smoldered with resentment against Esau's marriage to Canaanite pagans, they had never opened up and told Esau how they felt. The lack of communication in families makes the families sick. Families go through years of misery that could have been avoided at least partially by the courage to be open and communicate. 28:9 - married Mahalath...daughter of Ishmael - Some see this as another slap against his parents, in retaliation for their criticism of his first two marriages. Ishmael's family would later become the Arabs, enemies of Jacob's family, the Israelites. Viewed from our modern perspective, it would appear that Esau married another outsider. But the strong alienation later experienced between Israel and the Arabs had not set in at this time. Ishmael showed some family solidarity by coming back to help Isaac bury Abraham, Genesis 25:9. It is more likely that Esau's marriage to Ishmael's daughter was an attempt to please Isaac and Rebekah by marrying someone in the extended family, just as Jacob had been sent to do. 28:12 - angels - The word angel means messenger. Angels are spirit beings who do whatever God sends them for. Some angels joined Satan in rebellion against God. 28:14 - land...descendants...blessed - God repeats to Jacob the same promises made to Isaac and Abraham. Jacob is a long way from perfect, but he is chosen by God to head the covenant nation. Later God will discipline Jacob and change his heart. It is likely that God had never spoken to Jacob before. Jacob had related to God only through Isaac, who as patriarch was priest over the family and the one to whom God spoke. Now God confronts Jacob so that Jacob will have to respond to God and relate to him personally. In the same way, at some point in our life, each of us has to encounter God and decide how we personally will respond to him and relate to him. 28:15 - I am with you...i will bring you back - God gives Jacob the assurance he needs as he sets out, young and inexperienced, into unknown territory. God again does this for Jacob in his old age - Genesis 46:1-4. Compare Christ's encouragement to Paul when Paul faced the awesome task of evangelizing Corinth - Acts 18:9, 10. God knows our struggles and at needed times reminds us of his love and care for

us. 28:17 - afraid - A natural reaction to the presence of the Holy God. We need more of what our culture has largely lost, a sense of reverence and godly fear. 28:18 - pillar - Jacob wanted a memorial to this pivotal event in his life where he made a personal covenant with God. 28:19 - Bethel - from beth, house, and el, God, "House of God." 28:20 - If God will be with me...so that I return safely - things God had just promised in Jacob's dream. 28:21 - the LORD will be my God - Covenant language. There comes a time in every young person's life when he or she can no longer relate to God through their parents' faith but must decide if they will make that faith their own. Jacob does that here. And he does two concrete things to show that his covenant with God is serious: He makes the pillar God's house, implying that he will worship God here again (which he does when he returns to Canaan, Genesis 35:1-7). And he commits to return a tenth of all his prosperity to God. Our money is very important to us. Probably nothing expresses the seriousness of our faith in God more than significant devotion of our money to the needs of God s work. We give up some things we might have had because God and his work are more important to us. Abraham had given a tenth to Melchizedek, priest of the Most High God, Genesis 14:20. The duty to give a tenth to God was clearly spelled out in the Law of Moses for Israel, Leviticus 27:30, 32. But the patriarchs long before Moses had understood the need to honor God with a tithe (tenth). Though Christ and the apostles did not command Christians to give a literal tenth, the principle of proportional giving is clearly stated: Now about the collection for God's people...on the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with his income..." [KJV as God has prospered him"] - 1 Corinthians 16:1-2 "As" or "in keeping with" means proportional giving: the more prosperity God gives you, the more you give to him. Tithing is simply proportional giving, the proportion being a tenth. Though people might question about what proportion would properly honor God and leave enough for a person's own needs, the mind of God on that subject is clear from the Old Testament examples of tithing. The writer of these notes does not believe a Christian can honor God properly by giving less than a tithe. Your giving defines what is going on inside you spiritually. Jesus said, "Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." Tithing is important, not just so the church will get money to support its ministries, but more because a person cannot be well and mature spiritually until he/she willingly gives in a way that expresses genuine love to God and gives God important priority. God is love. God so loved the world that he gave his only Son Godly love by nature has to give. We cannot grow up into God s character as his children unless we learn a loving, giving spirit. Giving is not a problem to those who have grown up spiritually. It is their nature. We learn from Jacob's story that at young adulthood it is important to lay spiritual foundations for the rest of one's life, to encounter God for yourself and make the agreement by which you will live. 1) Decide that you will depend on God for your needs and security. 2) Vow to serve God as your first priority, to obey him in everything. 3) Spend time personally with God on a daily basis. Make it happen whatever else has to go. 2

4) Commit to give to God a regular, liberal portion of your prosperity. At SHBI we call this driving down stakes or markers that identify who you are and where you are going. We also talk about other markers that define your life priorities, such as a right relationship with your parents, and regular attendance whenever the church meets. 29:1 - well - A place where everyone came for water and where you could get directions if you were a stranger. 29:2 - stone - Probably to keep vermin from falling into the well and polluting the water. 29:4 - Haran, home of Laban. 29:8 - until all the flocks are gathered - They did not want to have to move the heavy stone more than once. Or it may be that they usually needed several shepherds at once to manage the stone. 29:10 - he...rolled the stone away - Jacob must have been a powerful man. He showed his regard for his kinfolk by making the move to water Laban's sheep. He may have also been showing off for Rachel. 29:11 - kissed Rachel - This was the customary greeting - see verse 13. It did not have the romantic meaning that we often connect with kissing today. However we do learn later that Jacob was attracted to Rachel. 29:13 - told him all these things - There would have been much family news to catch up on. 29:15 - wages - Laban realized that Jacob needed to begin making accumulating some wealth of his own. The NIV Study Bible says Leah means cow and Rachel means ewe. 29:18 - seven years - Love, when it is strong enough, will motivate a person to do amazing things. 29:20 - seemed like only a few days - Such is the power of love. 29:22 - feast - Wedding celebration. 29:23 - Leah - She was probably wearing an oriental veil and Jacob could not see that it was Leah. Later they would have been in the dark. 29:25 - deceived me - Only at morning light did Jacob realize that Laban had deceived him as he himself had deceived other people. 29:27 - another seven years of work - Laban is a sharp operator. 29:28 - Laban gave him...rachel - When God created man and woman, he did not intend polygamy. "A man will leave his father and mother and be united with his wife (not wives) - Genesis 2:24. God tolerated polygamy and divorce during this period because people were ignorant and their hearts were hard - Matthew 19:3-9; Acts 17:30. 29:30 - Jacob lay with Rachel - This would have been a hard time for Leah, who had to know how Jacob felt about Rachel. 29:31 - the LORD saw that Leah was not loved - God is especially aware of the disadvantaged who need special care. 29:32 - Reuben means "See, a son" (NIV text note). 3

29:33 - Simeon probably means "one who hears" (NIV text note). 29:34 - Levi is related to the word for "attached" (NIV text note). Levi would be the father of the priestly tribe in Israel. 29:35 - Judah is related to the word meaning "praise" (NIV text note). Judah was the father of the tribe from which our Lord Jesus was born. 30:1 - jealous - Polygamous marriages invite this kind of trouble. 30:2 - Jacob became angry - Even the marriages of the great patriarchs had their tensions. 30:3 - Here is Bilhah, my maidservant - Sarah had done this same thing with Abraham when Sarah had no children of her own. 30:6 - Dan means "He judged" (NASB text note). 30:8 - Naphtali is related to the word for "wrestled" (NASB text note). 30:10 - Gad means "with fortune" (NASB text note). 30:13 - Asher means "Happy" (NASB text note). 30:14 - mandrakes were considered an aphrodisiac (love medicine). 30:15 - took away my husband - Polygamy had made these two sisters, who should have loved each other, into rivals. 30:18 - Issachar is related to a word meaning "wages." 30:20 - This time my husband will treat me with honor - It is touching to see how much Leah wanted to gain Jacob's affection. Zebulun is related to a word which probably means "honor" (NIV text note). 30:23 - disgrace - This was how women in that culture felt about being childless. What a change when many women or couples today don't want pregnancy and will often kill the unborn infant to avoid the stress of caring for a child. 30:24 - Joseph means "add to me" (NASB text note). 30:27 - divination - Though Laban and his family knew and served Yahweh, they mixed this with pagan religion - see 31:19. God prohibited the Israelites from practicing divination, which means finding out mysteries by occult means. 30:32 - speckled..spotted - Jacob wisely chose a system which would always identify his stock and keep Laban from stealing them. It would also protect Jacob from false charges. 30:35 - removed...placed them in the care of his sons - Some think Laban stole in this way all that would have become Jacob's. But this would have been obvious to Jacob. Probably he removed them so that they could later be delivered to Jacob. 30:39 - mated in front of the branches...bore young that were streaked... - Whether this was done by some 4

spirit power, or whether God himself intervened in this way to bless Jacob, we cannot know. 30:41 - stronger - By placing the peeled branches only when the stronger animals were mating, Jacob practiced modern principles of selective breeding. 30:43 - exceedingly prosperous - It is not sinful to be rich, unless one gets his wealth wrongly or loves it more than God and people. 31:1 - Jacob has taken everything - Because of selfish human nature, people often resent those who are blessed more than themselves. 31:3 - Go back - God guides his children. God had promised to take care of Jacob and to return him home. 31:4 - sent word to Rachel and Leah - Jacob could not initiate a move back to Canaan without consulting his wives who would be called on to leave their home country and their father's family. to the fields - Where they could talk confidentially. 31:12 - I have seen all that Laban has been doing to you - God knows when people cheat us and mistreat us. Nothing gets past God and he will set things right in due time. 31:13 - leave this land - Even when he had a direct command from God, it was right for Jacob to explain things to his family and secure their united commitment to his plans. This is a good example for godly leaders. 31:16 - do whatever God has told you - Laban's greedy cheating had alienated even his own daughters from him. Whenever we sacrifice principle for profit, we may seem to win at first, but it always comes back on us in some harmful way. 31:19 - stole...household gods - These were small idols which families kept in their houses for supposed protection and help. Why did Rachel take them? She may have believed in them and wanted their help. She may have been afraid they would reveal Jacob's plans to Laban. She may have wanted to show that these idols were helpless. 31:23 - Gilead - Jacob was not far from his home country at this point. 31:24 - God came to Laban in a dream - God protects his children. 31:27 - Why did you run off secretly - Laban, from his perspective, had reason to be upset with Jacob. Such things ought not to be done in a family. But Laban had treated his family in such a way that he made it hard for them to leave in any other fashion. 31:32 - he shall not live - A rash statement. 31:35 - having my period - Rachel may or may not have been lying about this, but she certainly was concealing stolen property. These idols were later buried beneath an oak tree at Shechem before Jacob and family went to Bethel to build an altar and worship God - Genesis 35:2-4. 31:41 - changed my wages ten times - Did not keep your agreements. 31:42 - Fear - That is, the God Isaac feared. 31:44 - covenant - It was good at least that the dispute ended in an agreement not to harm each other. 5

31:46 - stones - The ancient people valued visible memorials of important events. 31:48 - Galeed means "witness heap." 31:49 - Mizpah...May the LORD keep watch - The word "Mizpah" itself means "the watchtower." Because of Laban's prayer, "May the LORD keep watch...", etc., "Mizpah" has become a word often used by believers who have to go separate ways. Between Jacob and Laban it was meant as a call for God to punish either one of them who broke the agreement. As we use it today, it is a prayer for God to take care of both persons and bring them together again. 31:54 - meal - A way of sealing the covenant. By G.B.
