Ancestors of Janet Finn Generation No. 1 1. Janet Finn 1, born 1701 in Albany, Albany Co., New York 1 ; died September 15, 1774 in Québec, Québec, Canada 2. She was the daughter of 2. John Finn and 3. Alida Janse Gardenier. She married (1) John McClure 3 1730 in New England 3,4. He was born Abt. 1701 in of Forestdale, Barnstable Co., Massachusetts. Notes for John McClure: 1754 - "The Interesting History of John McCluer" John McCluer and his spouse, Janet Finn, were natives of Forestdale, Massachusetts. Blacksmith and arms-maker by trade, it seems that our ancestor and his wife went "en Acadie" to work in Canso in that service of the English garrison. He was taken prisoner by Duvilliers in the spring of 1744 and brought to Quebec. Irish and Scottish, certainly they were Catholics, were treated with great benevolence by the French authorities who put them at liberty. John McCluer, one time returned to Quebec, worked for George Trevoux, arms manufacturer of the king. In 1752, John McCluer built himself a house at the suburb "Sainte-Roche". In 1748, his wife Janet Finn had to renounce Protestantism in the presence of Andre-Joseph Mathurine Jacquereau, OLS director of the seminary. Under the French regime, when some English speakers had to give testimony, one of John McCluer's sons, Thomas, was often used to interpret in front of the courts. She was the daughter of 6. Jan Jacobsz Gardenier and 7. Saartje Jansz Van Bremen. Notes for John Finn: John Finn was listed as the head of an Albany household on the census of 1697. Two years later, he joined his Albany neighbors in signing a loyalty oath to the King of England. He probably was a soldier at the Albany fort. In June 1697, he married Jopje Classe Van Slyck at the Albany Dutch church where their child was baptized in 1698. He then married Alide Jans Gardinier in 1699. By 1702, two of their children had been baptized at the Albany church. During that time, he was a juror and litigant before the Albany court. In June 1699, he was cited for trading with possessing the freedom of the city. Subsequently, he did have a trading license. Traditional sources identify him as a cooper and that he was from Waterfort, Ireland. After signing Albany-based petitions in 1700 and 1701 and the baptism of a son in 1702, John Finn's name disappeared from the community record.
