INTRODUCTION TO THE NEW TESTAMENT (BI 102B) Prairie Bible College, Winter 2006 (3 cr.) Wednesday and Friday, 2:00-3:15 p.m. in Founders Hall 231 Course Website: http://instructor.prairie.edu/stevenibbotson/bi102/home.htm Instructor: Steven C. Ibbotson, M.Div., Ph.D. Office: FB 217 Email: steve.ibbotson@prairie.edu Phone: ext. 3266 Hours: Posted on office door COURSE RATIONALE Before an in-depth study of the New Testament writings can be done, it is essential that one be familiar with the big picture of these writings their historical framework, overall structure, basic content, and main themes. This course is intended to prepare you for subsequent and more detailed study of the New Testament by surveying this big picture. COURSE OBJECTIVES Upon successful completion of this course you should be able to: 1. describe generally the historical background of the New Testament. 2. outline generally the content of the New Testament. 3. summarize generally the main theological themes of the New Testament. 4. identify some of the critical issues related to the study of the New Testament. 5. begin to apply the New Testament to your life and to the Church today. 6. appreciate the New Testament as a significant part of God s Word to us. COURSE DESIGN This course provides many pedagogical challenges for the instructor, especially due to the variety in experience and expectations among students in relation to the study of the New Testament. Some of you have had little experience in real study of the New Testament, while others have much more experience. Some of you are looking for in-depth academic study, while others are concerned simply to know what the New Testament has to say to you today in your daily life. This course is intended to cut a middle path, recognizing the variety of experiences and incorporating both academic and applicational concerns. In general terms, the assignments are designed to assess your learning in a variety of ways. The tests are more focused on memorization of facts; the responses to the study questions are more focused on comprehension of concepts as evidenced by written description; and the term project is more focused on independent research skills and creative application of the knowledge gained through that research. While some students may excel in some of these specific areas but not in others, in this way all the assignments provide a more balanced assessment of your learning in the course. This course will use a Team-Based Learning approach (see Michaelson, Knight, & Fink, 2002). Your instructor will provide further information on this approach, its benefits, and the expectations on you in the first few classes. In general, the Team-Based Learning approach will enable you to learn from other students as well as the instructor as you interact with each other s responses to the study questions and examine the teaching of the NT.

New Testament Survey (BI 102B) Winter 2006 Course Syllabus, page 2 COURSE TEXTBOOKS Required: The New Testament. Elwell, Walter A., and Robert W. Yarbrough. Encountering the New Testament: A Historical and Theological Survey. Grand Rapids: Baker, 1998. COURSE REQUIREMENTS 1. Attendance Consistent attendance is essential for receiving the full benefit of this course; inconsistent attendance will inevitably be reflected in assignment and exam grades. Thus, you will be required to initial an attendance chart at each class period indicating your attendance of that class. Note on attendance: You may be penalized for each class period missed over and above four missed classes. See the PBC Academic Guide for more details. 2. Course Workbook & Study Guide You are to complete a Course Workbook & Study Guide through the semester, indicating completion of the relevant reading and answering the study questions before the class indicated on the course schedule. This is crucial, as it will help you get more out of the class time. Your answers may be handwritten if legible; however, a typed submission is preferred, using a 12-point font and doublespaced. The Course Workbook & Study Guide is worth 30% of your total grade. You will be graded on the completion, adequacy, and accuracy of your answers to these study questions, as well as the degree of completion of your reading. 3. Exams You will be required to prepare for and write two exams during the course. The mid-term exam covers the introductory material, the historical context of the New Testament, Jesus and the Gospels, and Acts. The mid-term exam will be written in class on February 22. The final exam covers Romans through Revelation, including the lives and ministries of the relevant apostles. The final exam will be written at the scheduled time during final exam week. Each exam will be made up of multiple choice and matching questions. Each exam is worth 20%; combined they comprise 40% of your total grade. 4. Term Project First, choose one of the following topics for your project. You may select a topic outside of this list only with my written permission. Any one New Testament city (e.g. Antioch) Jesus Final Week Paul s Missionary Journeys Jesus teaching on Hell Jesus teaching on Money Jesus teaching on The Kingdom of God Discipleship/following Jesus in Matthew or Mark Jesus deity in John The Holy Spirit in Acts God s glory in Romans, 2 Corinthians, and Ephesians

New Testament Survey (BI 102B) Winter 2006 Course Syllabus, page 3 Reconciliation in 2 Corinthians, Ephesians, and Colossians Jesus death in Hebrews Following/imitating Christ in 1 and 2 Peter Love in 1-3 John Victory/overcoming in Revelation Second, research your topic. First, find any key passages in the relevant New Testament writings on your topic, and jot down your own notes on them related to your topic. Then, use at least eight (8) other quality sources to find more information about your topic; be sure to consult the course bibliography for these sources. The use of a Bible is assumed, and should not be counted among these secondary sources. Take notes from these sources related to your topic. Then type up a 3-4 page summary of your research, in 12-point font and double-spaced, documenting each source appropriately. This summary may be in essay form or full-sentence point form. Third, choose the type of presentation you wish to use for your research. This presentation should reflect the content of your research as well as your personal response to the topic. You may select a presentation mode outside of this list only with my written permission. Essay (1300-1500 words) Letter (in the style of a New Testament letter; 1000-1200 words) Poem (40-50 lines) Story (1300-1500 words) Song (3-5 minutes) Drama (monologue or mime; 4-6 minutes) Art (painting, drawing, sculpture, photographic collage, papier mache, etc.) Website (homepage with at least 3 subpages; using graphics and at least 400 words) Computer video/slide show (4-6 minutes of continuous presentation) Finally, you are to hand in your research summary along with your final presentation, which should be handed in on an appropriate medium (paper, CD, etc.). If your presentation is nonverbal (e.g. painting), please provide about a paragraph of written explanation as to how your presentation relates to your research. This assignment is due by March 22 and is worth 30% of your total grade. You will be graded on the quality of your research and the appropriateness of your presentation to your research. COURSE GRADING Course Study Guide 30% Exams (2 X 20%) 40% Term Project 30% TOTAL 100% IMPORTANT NOTES Note on collaborative effort and plagiarism: Unless otherwise indicated above, all assignments are individual projects, and are not to be done as group projects. You may discuss your assignments with fellow students, but it is expected that the assignment you hand in represents your own work. When using statements from the work of other people, or concepts that are not considered generally accessible knowledge, be sure that you give adequate credit to those people. Plagiarism will not be tolerated. Please see the PBC Academic Guide for more details. Note on assignment formatting: You may format your assignments according to MLA or Turabian (Chicago) style; either is acceptable. Nonetheless, you must be consistent and proper in whichever style you use. Please make sure that your Prairie campus mailbox number is on all submitted assignments.

New Testament Survey (BI 102B) Winter 2006 Course Syllabus, page 4 Note on privacy issues: Assignments are generally returned through the Prairie campus mail system. Grades will be provided on a folded sheet attached to your assignment. Exams are not returned though exam grades will be provided in a manner that protects the privacy of your grade. Note on due dates, extensions, and late work: Assignments are due by 5:00 p.m. at my office on the due date unless otherwise indicated. Extensions are available within the semester for legitimate reasons (e.g. sudden illness, family emergency). Reasons related to inadequate time management will not be considered legitimate (e.g. a planned drama performance or athletic event). To receive an extension, please write your name, your box number, your reason for the request, the date of the request, and the date which you prefer as the new due date on a piece of paper and bring it to the instructor; alternatively, you can email me with your request. If the extension is approved, the instructor will sign the paper or send you an email reply, which you are then to attach to the assignment when it is handed in. Late work will be penalized according to the standards given in the PBC Academic Guide. The instructor reserves the right to exercise leniency in a particular student s situation.
