Feel At home AT CORPUS CHRISTI UNIVERSITY PARISH we want our students to "feel at home." We want to not only be a resource for spiritual growth, worship and reflection, but also a place where you'll gather and meet great friends, have great times and gather great memories that will last a lifetime. Our community is welcoming and supportive. Our two student organizations - CSA (on Main Campus) and Newman Club (at the Health Science Campus) have many resources to support student life at the University of Toledo. From Monsignor s Desk Dear Friends, This year during Lent the parishioners are invited to wear a Jerusalem Cross as a sign that we are on the Lenten journey together. I thought I would offer some background on the Jerusalem Cross. The Jerusalem Cross appeared in mosaics prior to 427 AD, this large cross surrounded by four smaller crosses represents the person of Christ [with the large cross] and the four parts of the world [with the smaller crosses]. Throughout time the cross has taken on other meanings; one example is that the five crosses represent the five wounds of Christ; another meaning is that the four crosses proclaim the four corners of the earth with the largest one beginning in Jerusalem and symbolizing Christ; another meaning reminds us that the large cross represents the crucified Christ and the four smaller crosses represent the four Gospels. Lastly, there is another idea that the four arms of the larger cross are symbolizing the four directions of the world and the concept that Jerusalem is the spiritual center of the world. Today this is the symbol of the Patriarch of Jerusalem and all the ministries provided to the people of the Holy Land. Besides spiritual ministries they include education and medical care for all people, Christians, Muslims and Jews. I have personally visited a hospital in Jerusalem that serves primarily the Muslim Community. Father Phil has visited a Care Center in Bethlehem that serves unwed Muslim mothers, who would be murdered without the assistance and protection of this Catholic center. All this work is done under the symbol of the Jerusalem Cross. We also wear this cross to be in union with the Christians who are left in the Holy Land [only 2% of the population now]. They have been murdered and driven from their homeland and we stand with them. This symbol is very much a part of who we are as Christians [not just Catholics]. So, we bring our sinfulness to this cross and receive the Grace of God so that we can continue to spread the Good News and Good Work of Jesus Christ to the four corners of the world. Happy Lent! Msgr. Michael Monsignor Michael Billian Lenten Mid Day Musters: Join in a discussion over lunch, following noon Mass, of the Scripture readings for the following Sunday on Wednesday March 15, 22, 29 and April 5. Open to all parishioners. Pre-register for lunch to Kim Williams, our parish secretary, by the Monday before the discussion (kwilliams@ccup.org or 419-531-4992). PAX CHRISTI FOOD FOR OTHERS: In order to support the Parish Lenten Care Bags collection, we will NOT have a separate collection in either March or April. Our recipient, Lutheran Social Services, a Feed Your Neighbor location, is included in this Lenten collection. We will resume our regular monthly collection May 21. Pax Christi thanks you for your continued generosity! Our monthly meeting is usually the first Sunday of the month after the 11:00 Mass in the DeBenedetti Room. For further information, contact Barb Colvin at bcolvin@bex.net or 419-290-2240, or view the CCUP.org website under Programs for Everyone. Sunday, April 2 is our next meeting from 12:15-1:30 p.m.

Dispensation from Lenten Abstinence on Friday, March 17, 2017. Out of pastoral solicitude, Bishop Daniel Thomas has formally dispensed the faithful of the Diocese of Toledo from obligation to abstain from meat on the Memorial of Saint Patrick, Bishop, which will be observed this year on Friday, March 17. Those who choose to partake of meat on that day are encouraged to undertake another penance that day in the form of a corporal or spiritual work of mercy. In this way, a faithful Catholic still keeps the penitential spirit of a Friday in Lent and unites oneself more closely with the suffering Christ and His Church. The annual Celebrity Wait Night, which benefits Bethany House, is Monday, April 3, 2017 from 6-8:30 p.m. at The Docks in Downtown Toledo. This year, we are using both the Real Seafood and Zia's Restaurants. The Bethany House provides safe, long-term shelter for victims of Domestic Violence, especially women and children. If you have not joined us in the past, please come. Bryce Roberts and Sr. Joy Barker would love to serve you! Please email for reservations:jbarker@ sistersosf.org. It is first come basis. Thank you! Looking to get involved in Walk for Water? We will be collecting plastic milk jugs to hold water in for the day of the race. If you would like to donate some jugs from home, please rinse out, put them in a bag, and place them in the Newman Rooms. We appreciate any help you can offer. Contact Zach Gibbemeyer at zachary.gibbemeyer@rockets.utoledo.edu with questions. Walk for Water will also be hosting an informational meeting on Sunday, March 19th, after the 11 a.m. Mass in the Meeting Room. All are welcome! "Muslims in America: Where Do We Go From Here?" You are invited to The Annual Imam Khattab Lecture on Islamic Thought, which will be held at Driscoll Auditorium (Driscoll Alumni Center) on Wednesday, March 15, 2017, beginning at 7 pm, with a dessert reception following. Professor Ovarmir Anjum, the Imam Khattab Endowed Chair of Islamic Studies at UT, will address the current religious and political landscape. The event is free and open to the public, but complimentary tickets are required. For additional information and to RSVP, please visit cfru.eventbrite.com.
