Welcome to Saint Nicholas on this Sunday, November 19, 2017 Today we commemorate: 9th Sunday of Luke Obadiah the Prophet Martyrs Barlaam of Caesarea and Heliodorus Anthimos, Thallalaeos, Christopher, Euphemia & her children, the Martyrs EPISTLE READING St. Paul's Letter to the Ephesians 2:14-22 Prokeimenon. Grave Mode. Psalm 28.11,1 The Lord will give strength to his people. Verse: Bring to the Lord, O sons of God, bring to the Lord honor and glory. The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Ephesians 2:14-22 Brethren, Christ is our peace, who has made us both one, and has broken down the dividing wall of hostility, by abolishing in his flesh the law of commandments and ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace, and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby bringing the hostility to an end. And he came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near; for through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father. So then you are no longer strangers and sojourners, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole structure is joined together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord; in whom you also are built into it for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.

GOSPEL READING The Gospel According to Luke 12:16-21 The Lord said this parable: "The land of a rich man brought forth plentifully; and he thought to himself, 'What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?' And he said, 'I will do this: I will pull down my barns, and build larger ones; and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I will say to my soul, 'Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; take your ease, eat, drink, be merry.' But God said to him, 'Fool! This night your soul is required of you; and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?' So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God." As he said these things, he cried out: "He who has ears to hear, let him hear." Statement on the Shooting in Tehama County D A T E : November 15, 2017 C A T E G O R Y : M E T R O P O L I T A N ' S M E S S A G E S Metropolitan's Messages A U T H O R : H I S E M I N E N C E M E T R O P O L I T A N G E R A S I M O S His Eminence Metropolitan Gerasimos Beloved in the Lord, Deliver me, O Lord, from evil men; preserve me from violent men... Psalm 140:1 The headline was all too familiar another shooting that has claimed innocent lives and shaken a small town to its core. This is not something we should ever become accustomed to or indifferent with our emotions. The lives of four people were tragically taken by a gunman who was later killed during this most recent attack which happened on Tuesday, November 14 in the small town of Rancho Tehama, California, located approximately 120 miles north of Sacramento. There were seven locations where the gunman launched rapid fire, and there are still at least ten people wounded, some critically, from his rage of violence. One of the locations was a local elementary school where parents were just dropping off their children to attend classes. We must continue to pray for all those who lost their lives in this tragedy as well as pray for the recovery of those still bearing physical and emotional wounds. Through God s greatness, mercy and love, He will provide healing and comfort and will be a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble. (Psalm 9:9) We also give thanks to the first responders, the police and fire departments and medical teams, for their diligent efforts and ask that God give them strength in their most important work.

Sadly, these incidents are becoming more and more prevalent. Let us all be vigilant during these times, keeping aware of our surroundings, reporting any suspicious activity to the authorities, and always wearing the Cross of Christ to protect us. With Love in Christ, + G E R A S I M O S Metropolitan of San Francisco

God s work in my life Every day I can see God s hand, from looking at my family to seeing the mountains and desert outside. As a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner, I had the joy of experiencing His work daily. The joy of parents upon seeing their infant for the first time, to the time they are able to take them home. Unfortunately, most infants I worked with were either born too early, had an illness or a congenital problem, the parents still loved them unconditionally. One of those infants that had been with us for a very long time. He was over a year old, regardless of how he felt he would always smile and put out his arms when you came into his room. He was especially fond of balloons and always had a balloon at the top of his crib. His condition began to deteriorate. This particular night he became lethargic, didn t interact with us and didn t want to be fed. We checked on him frequently and made sure his alarms on the monitors were set in case he started to have any breathing or heart problems. A few hours into my shift his heart monitor started alarming. His bedside nurse went in to check on him and called us for help. His heart had stopped beating and he wasn t breathing. We did everything we could to resuscitate him, but he didn t respond. After half an hour we still had no discernable heartbeat. It was time to let him go. We had to call his parents, so we placed his favorite blanket on him. When we went out of his room we had to all take a few minutes before making the call. Then 15 minutes later we heard his balloon bouncing. We went into his room and he was awake, and pulling the string to his balloon. From that moment on we called him Lazarus. We would talk about him for years to come, that night and for several nights later we tried to explain what happened. But even though health care is very science driven there are many times that only God s work can explain the miracles we see in our lives. When I was at the university (a very long time ago) I had a biology professor that I thought was the smartest scientist I had ever met. One day while he was explaining some detailed event (obviously over my head) he looked out and saw how confused we were. He said, the one thing he has learned in all his years of work is that there is a God and if you question it, look around. I grew up in the Greek Orthodox Church but as we grow there are challenges and questions in our minds, especially when, as a young adult you know that you know everything about everything. My biology professor had put it so simply. Now I know you haven t lived long enough if you don t believe in God and the miracles around us. Angela Ryan
