Since 1990, the Ravenna Manifestazioni Foundation has organized the Ravenna Festival, one of the most important events on the international scene, showcasing a large variety of performative languages and outstanding world-famous artists on a stage provided by the entire city, be it the basilicas covered with mosaics or the glimmering historic theatres. Through the Festival, the non-profit Foundation produces events that promote the city and province of Ravenna, its region and the Nation. In so doing, the Foundation also promotes cultural tourism, and especially the local early Christian and Byzantine basilicas, all UNESCO World heritage sites, which provide amazing venues for the Festival s sacred music events evening concerts featuring exceptional ensembles and choirs, and the In Templo Domini Sunday morning programme. In 2016, the Festival introduced VESPERS AT SAN VITALE, a series of concerts scheduled in the precious Byzantine basilica daily, at 7 p.m. The programme, featuring refined sonatas, sacred hymns, choirs and musical ensembles, was enthusiastically received by an audience of locals and tourists. VESPERS AT SAN VITALE - 2 nd EDITION VESPERS AT SAN VITALE intends to promote concerts enhancing the peculiar relationship the Festival has established with the Basilica of San Vitale: these events are a special opportunity and cast a new light on the historical, artistic and spiritual heritage of the Basilica through the inexhaustible richness of the sacred repertoire. The subject of the present Call is the creation of one or more original programmes of high-quality sacred music (max. length: 30-40 minutes). These will be performed from June 1 to July 5, 2017 at the Basilica of San Vitale, Ravenna, at 7 p.m. The selected projects will be included in the programme of the XXIX edition of the Ravenna Festival, and will have to be created by their authors in close collaboration with the Festival s production structure. Depending on the project, artists will be provided with a contribution to the expenses, in consideration of the requests included in the Application form (item 3. Resources and Technical Rider). The scheduling consists of minimum 3/maximum 7 consecutive days of daily concerts at 7 p.m., with the opportunity of repeating the same programme. The exact timetable will be agreed with the representatives of the selected proposals, but the periods of availability must be an integral part of the artistic proposal. The first and fundamental evaluation criterion will concern the musical quality of the proposal, to be established through an audio and/or video file submitted with the Application form. The following aspects will also be considered: 1. The project s consistency, variety and novelty; 2. The programme s originality and quality (special attention will be paid to rarely performed, regional or national repertories). The programme should also comply with the limitations imposed by the venue, an active place of worship; 3. A clear and adequate planning of resources (to be detailed in the Application form, item 3. Resources and Technical rider). REQUIREMENTS The selection is open to choirs, musical ensembles, soloists, independently of geographical origin and with no age limit. Solo organ concerts will not be considered, but please note there is an organ in the women s gallery (Mascioni 1960). Applications will not be considered unless they are accompanied by an audio or video recording to prove the quality of the performers. The name of a Contact person will have to be defined in order to safeguard the implementation of the project in case of acceptance. Projects that have previously been presented elsewhere, either fully or in part, are eligible provided no copyright is violated.
TERMS AND CONDITIONS The Application Form must be duly filled-in and submitted by e-mail with audio and/or video attachments no later than 12.00 noon, Tuesday, January 31, 2018 to: comunicazione@ravennafestival.org Emails must be marked Application - Vespers at San Vitale in the object field. Applications will include all details of the Contact person (to be contacted as necessary), as well the authorization to personal data processing and dissemination in accordance with Legislative Decree no. 196/2003. Documents will be submitted in either Italian (Italian-speaking applicants) or English (all other applicants). The Festival reserves the right to verify the Applicants statements, and to request further documentation at any stage of the selection process and/or after the selection. SELECTION PROCEDURES The selection of suitable projects will be based on the documentation submitted, and on any other additional documentation and/or interviews with the project s authors, if required. The Festival also reserves the right: - to select and create one or more projects, depending on the quality and quantity of projects submitted and in accordance with available resources; - to create and produce one or more projects, not limited to the scope and timing of the present Call, according to rules to be defined and agreed with the project s authors in compliance with the laws regulating intellectual property. We hereby also state that the project ideas submitted within the present Call for Projects will be deposited with the Festival, and not be made public. DATES AND DEADLINE January 31, 2018 deadline for the submission of applications April 4, 2018 end of selection procedure 1 June to 5 July 2018 selected concerts will be staged at the Basilica of San Vitale PERSONAL DATA PROCESSING In compliance with Legislative Decree no. 196 dated June 30, 2003, Personal Data Protection Code, and subsequent amendments, the personal data submitted with the applications for the present Call for Projects will be processed in accordance with the said rules, and in compliance with legal obligations.
