As we go through our daily lives, challenges surround us. Life is full of obstacles we must overcome. But we cannot overcome those obstacles by ourselves. So then, how are we to approach those obstacles? Today s memory link reminds us to Be strong and of good courage...for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. Joshua 1:9. We can approach those obstacles with courage. God s very presence is with us. He will give us courage and will lead us every step of the way. In today s story, Gideon was fearful of his enemies. But God never intended for Gideon to fight his enemies alone. God had a plan to help Gideon and the Israelites. Once Gideon finally realized that God was with him, he was able to face his enemies and go into battle. We have a loving Father in Heaven that is always there for us. We can have courage, because we can rely on the strength of God. God can take our weakness and transform it into triumph. GET CONNECTED Worship Tip 10-15 10-15 Minutes Building relationships in Surf Teams; introducing today s lesson No supplies needed Use the following conversation prompts to get to know the kids in your surf team and to introduce today s lesson. Today s character word is courage. What is courage? Name something you have done recently that required courage. Tell about someone you think is courageous and why. Today s story is about someone who was bullied. Have you ever been bullied? How did it feel? Show me how a person who feels scared might look and act. Show me how a person with courage looks and acts. Guide clubbers to locate and mark today s Bible connection and memory link in their Bibles so they can find the pages quickly as directed in the session. This week our character word is courage. We are able to show courage when we ask God to go through life with us. Look for songs that remind us that God is always with us and gives us courage to fight our daily battles. As our memory verse reminds us, we can be strong and courageous because God is with us wherever we go.

MEMORY LINK Teaching a Bible verse to clubbers; helping them to memorize the verse No supplies needed Focus on the Bible Ask students to hold their KBC Study Bibles up in the air. Explain that the Bible is made up of many books. Those books are separated into two parts - the Old Testament and the New Testament. All of the words written in the Bible come from God. Today s memory link is found in the sixth book of the Old Testament. What is the sixth book? (Joshua) Let s read our memory link from Joshua 1:9b on page 226 in our KBC Study Bible. Follow along with me as I read it. Focus on today s Memory Link God gave us the Bible so we would know how to live. Today s verse includes our character word. The verse says we can be strong and courageous because God is with us wherever we go. Divide the students into 2 groups. Ask group 1 to say the first part of the verse, Be strong and of good courage and ask group 2 to say the second part of the verse, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. Allow the groups to repeat the verse a couple of times and then switch parts so that group 2 starts the verse and group 1 completes it. Option 1 - HUDDLE UP No supplies needed 10-15 Instruct each surf team to get in a huddle like a football team. Ask the clubbers to take turns putting a hand in the middle and saying a word of the verse. Go around the circle allowing each child to take a turn saying one word and putting their hand(s) in the middle. Continue until the whole verse and scripture reference is quoted. Then count to 3 and instruct the kids to raise their hands as they yell, courage! Repeat a few more times until everyone is familiar with the verse. (page 2) Joshua 1:9b Be strong and of good courage for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. KBC Study Bible pg. 226) Do you ever have students who just can t sit still or focus? Are they sometimes disobedient? You can find quick tips for managing behavior in the KBC Leadership Manual Volume 2: Beach Club Essentials. Here is one simple tip- ask what behavior management cues and reminders your school uses and implement them in your club. Using what the kids already know will help facilitate greater success in correct behavior. Option 2 - LAST PERSON STANDING Bean bags Instruct your surf team to form a circle. Pass the bean bag around the circle as the group says the verse aloud. The clubber holding the bean bag when the last word of the verse is said, is out. That person quickly hands the bean bag to a friend and steps out of the circle. The group begins to pass the bean bag and repeat the memory link again. Continue to play until only one person remains. Today s memory link contains ellipses, which are three dots that indicate part of the verse was left out. Help kids understand that removed words don t change the meaning of the verse, but make it shorter for memorization. Always guide kids to read memory links containing ellipses in full from the Bible so they understand the entire verse. It s also good to read the verses before and after so kids see the verse context and can better understand the meaning of the verse.

BIBLE CONNECTION Teaching today s character word through a gospel-centered Bible story 10-15 (page 3) Flashlight Introduce the Story Many kids are afraid of the dark. What can I use to help me see if it is very dark? Show them the flashlight and turn it on. The flashlight can give me courage in the dark because I can see what is around me. In our story today, you are going to learn about a man named Gideon who needed courage. Turn to Judges 6 (KBC Study Bible page 259). Listen to see how Gideon uses a flashlight in today s story. Let s see if it was the light that gave him courage or something else. Judges 6:1-10 Gideon was an Israelite and times were very hard for the Israelites, even though they were God s special people. They had chosen to disobey God. They even worshipped false gods like Baal and did evil things. Because of this disobedience, God allowed a group of people called the Midianites to overpower them and bully them. The Midianites took their livestock and destroyed their crops which left the Israelites scared, poor and with little food As you prepare to teach, pray and read the Bible text first. Don t merely read the story from these pages! Remember your job is to make God s word come alive for kids. Feel free to interject examples from your personal experience, but focus on God s Word and the teaching objective. Judges 6:11-40 Because God loved His people, He had a plan to save them. An angel disguised as a messenger came to Gideon. Guide kids to find Judges 6:12 to discover what the angel said to Gideon. The word valor means courage, so the angel called Gideon a man of courage. But, when the angel came to visit Gideon, Gideon was hiding from the Midianites to do his work. And when the Lord told him to destroy his father s idol to Baal, Gideon did it in the middle of the night so no one would know. Gideon asked God for two signs that would prove that He was with Gideon. Talk About It Gideon didn t act very courageously, did he? But the Lord told Gideon that He would be with him and give him the courage he would need to fight and defeat the Midianites. Gideon couldn t do it alone. Judges 7:1-8 God told Gideon to gather an army. So Gideon called all the men to battle and 32,000 men came in answer to Gideon s call. Gideon probably felt pretty courageous with that many men on his side! But God told Gideon that there were too many soldiers for Him to deliver Midian into their hands because He didn t want Israel to have an opportunity to brag about their own strength. He wanted them to give God the glory. Gideon told the soldiers that if they were afraid, they could return home. Now Gideon had only 10,000 men left. But God said that was still too many. So God told Gideon to take the men to the water for a drink for the next test. The ones who were watchful and lapped the water up to their mouth would remain in Gideon s army. Gideon was left with only 300 men. Talk About It What do you think happened to Gideon s courage when he started with 32,000 men in his army but only 300 were left? Gideon s courage didn t come from the size of his army. Gideon had courage because God was with him.

Judges 7:9-21 God told Gideon to give each man in his army a trumpet to blow, an empty jar and a torch. Gideon told them to follow His instructions. They were to surround the Midianite camp at night and blow their trumpets all at the same time and shout, For the Lord and for Gideon! Then they were to break the jars and grasp the torches in their left hands and their trumpets in their right hands and continue to blow. When they did so, all the Midianites were surprised and scared. The Midianites turned on each other and some ran away. The Israelites won the battle! Talk About It Gideon needed courage to face his fears and stand up to his bullies, the Midianites. God gave Gideon courage and Gideon knew God was with him. I ll bet you ve seen someone be a bully. Some of you may have been bullied. Bullying is wrong. It takes courage to stand up to a bully. You can have courage because God is with you and can help you, just like He helped Gideon. Remember the soldiers who came to help Gideon fight against the Midianites? There are many people who are ready to help you if you are being bullied. Your teacher, your parents, your Beach Club leaders, your principal and other adults you can trust are ready to help you if you are being bullied. With God s help, you can have courage to tell an adult you trust and to stand up against bullying. (page 4) KiDs Beach Club does not tolerate bullying. Both leaders and kids should treat each other with respect. If a bullying incident happens in club, immediately report to the school administration and your KBC field staff representative for advising. Gospel Connection Following Jesus can take courage, too. Every week we talk about how your sin separates you from God. You have heard that Jesus is the Savior, but you haven t felt courageous enough to turn away from your sin and turn to God through Jesus. Don t let fear or embarrassment keep you from following Jesus. Be courageous and ADMIT that you are a sinner and ASK God to forgive you. BELIEVE that Jesus died on the cross to save you from your sin and confess that Jesus is Lord. You can CHOOSE TO FOLLOW Jesus with courage knowing that God is always with you. Application/Transition Did you hear me refer to a flashlight in the story? Yes, the people used torches! This week, if you find yourself afraid, remember that just like this flashlight helps us when we are afraid of the dark (turn on flashlight), God is with us at all times and that is where we find courage! Gospel Tip Today s lesson on courage is a good time to focus on the courage it takes to make the decision to follow Jesus. Many of the kids may be worried about what their peers will think, or they may just be shy. Either way, they may will be reluctant to make that initial step. As surf leaders, you know your kids best and will be aware of who seems ready to make the decision to follow Jesus. Consider offering to walk to the designated counseling area with your clubber.

SURF TEAM TIME Connecting with kids in small groups; applying today s Bible Connection and Character Word 5-10 (page 5) Memory Link cards, Hang 10 pages, index cards, pens Gospel Connection Before you begin, ask if there are any clubbers who would like to talk with the Bible connection leader about praying to ask Jesus to become their forever friend. If so, let them go to the designated area. Today s Lesson What questions do you have about today s story? When do you find it tough to be courageous? Who or what gave Gideon courage in our story? Who can give you courage when you need it? Pray Encourage kids to write prayer requests on index cards. Lead the kids in prayer. Take the cards home and pray for the kids during the week. Thank You, God, for giving us courage when we need it and for being with us wherever we go. In Jesus name, Amen. There is an old saying: They won t care how much you know until they know how much you care. Take time each week to give each student some individual time and affirmation. If you haven t started already, pray for the kids in your group by name. Consider taking a picture of your group with your phone so you can look at them as you pray, study or think about them throughout the week. Use the Bible Give each child a memory link card. Review today s memory link and character word. Guide kids to use the cards to mark today s story in their KBC Study Bibles. Lead them to highlight today s memory link. Hang 10 Pages Give each child a Hang 10 Page. Challenge kids to hang out with God 10 minutes each day by praying and reading the Bible, using the Hang 10 page as a guide. Encourage kids to bring back their Hang 10 page next week. Hey clubbers, pick up your Hang 10 page and let s look together at Day 4. What does it say to do? It instructs you to say the memory link verse (Joshua 1:9) by starting with your name. Let s go around our circle and say the verse with each of our names at the start. Example: David, be strong and of good courage... for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.

MAKE IT STICK - REVIEW GAME Playing a game to review today s Bible Connection and Character Word Option 1 - WALKING SIDE BY SIDE Bandanas God promises to be by our side. Let s play a game called walking side-byside. Divide children into pairs, matching children of similar height and build. Have the partners stand beside each other and tie their legs together so each pair of children has three legs rather than four. Mark a starting line and a finish line. As a pair answers a question, they may start on their walk to the finish line and back. Option 2 - IT TAKES TWO Shoes with laces Sometimes it s very hard to complete a challenge on our own. Thankfully, God promised that He is with us and will help us. Let s play a game that shows us that if we face a challenge that is almost impossible alone, it can be done with a partner. Explain to the clubbers that the challenge today is for two clubbers to work together to tie a shoelace using only one hand each. The first pair to tie their shoelaces gets to answer a question. REVIEW QUESTIONS 1. In what book of the Bible is today s story found? (Judges) 5-10 (page 6) The activities in the lessons may need to be adapted for your group. You may need to tweak the game to work in your space or choose a different game from a previous lesson that worked well for your club. Consider keeping a notebook of lessons and as the year goes by, marking the activities you played and noting how they went. For example, use the code 0-5: 0 meaning the game was a flop; 5 meaning a sure winner you would want to play again. 2. What is today s character word? (Courage) 3. Who in today s story was courageous? (Gideon) 4. What was Gideon doing when God called on him? (He was hiding from the Midianites while he was working because he was scared.) 5. Where did Gideon receive his courage? (From God) 6. How many people ended up being in Gideon s army? (300) 7. What did the army carry in their hands when they surrounded the Midianites? (A horn and a jar and a torch) 8. Who helped Gideon and the army win the battle? (God) 9. Why did God want Gideon s army to be so small? (So that they would know that God saved them instead of their own might.) 10. Recite today s memory link, Joshua 1:9b.
