First Station JESUS IS CONDEMNED TO DEATH Prayer Leader: We love you, Christ; People: Because you first loved us. Reading When morning came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people conferred together against Jesus in order to bring about his death. They bound him, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate the governor. He asked them, What should I do with Jesus who is called the Messiah? And the people said, Let him be crucified! So when Pilate saw that he could do nothing, but rather that a riot was beginning, he handed Jesus over to be crucified. (Matthew 27:1-2, 22, 24a, 26b)

Second Station JESUS TAKES UP HIS CROSS Prayer Leader: We love you, Christ; People: Because you first loved us. Reading So they took Jesus; and carrying the cross by himself, he went out to what is called The Place of the Skull, which in Hebrew is called Golgotha. (John 19:17)

Third Station THE CROSS IS LAID ON SIMON OF CYRENE Prayer Leader: We love you, Christ; People: Because you first loved us. Readings As they led Jesus away, they seized a man, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming from the country, and they laid the cross on him, and made him carry it behind Jesus. (Luke 23:26) If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. (Mark 8:34)

Fourth Station JESUS IS NAILED TO THE CROSS Prayer Leader: We love you, Christ; People: Because you first loved us. Readings And when they came to a place called Golgotha (which means the Place of a Skull) they offered him wine to drink mixed with gall; but when he tasted it, he would not drink it. And they divided his clothes among themselves by casting lots. (Matthew 27:33-35a) This was to fulfill what the scripture says, they divided my clothes among themselves, and for my clothing they cast lots. (John 19:24b re: Ps 22:18) Then, they crucified Jesus there with the criminals, one on his right and one on his left. (Luke 23:33) And the scripture was fulfilled which says, He was numbered with the transgressors. (Isaiah 53:12b) And those who passed by derided him. (Matthew 27:39a)

Fifth Station JESUS MEETS HIS MOTHER Prayer Leader: We love you, Christ; People: Because you first loved us. Readings Meanwhile, standing near the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing beside her, he said to his mother, Woman, here is your son. Then he said to the disciple, Here is your mother. And from that hour the disciple took her into his own home. (John 19 35-37) There were also women looking on from a distance; among them were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome. These used to follow him and provided for him when he was in Galilee; and there were many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem. (Mark 15:40-41)

Sixth Station JESUS DIES ON THE CROSS Prayer Leader: We love you, Christ; People: Because you first loved us. Readings From noon on, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. And about three o clock Jesus cried with a loud voice, My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? (Mark 15:33-34) When Jesus knew that all was now finished, he said, I am thirsty. So they put a sponge full of the wine on a branch of hyssop and held it to his mouth. When Jesus had received the wine, he said, It is finished. Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. (John 19:28-30) Since it was the day of Preparation, the people did not want the bodies left on the cross during the Sabbath. So they asked Pilate to have the bodies removed. The soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other who had been crucified with him. But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. Instead, one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once blood and water came out. (John 19:31-34)

Seventh Station JESUS IS LAID IN THE TOMB Prayer Leader: We love you, Christ; People: Because you first loved us. Reading When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who was also a disciple of Jesus. He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus; then Pilate ordered it to be given to him. So Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn in the rock. He then rolled a great stone to the door of the tomb and went away. (Matthew 27: 57-60) Prayer Leader: We glory in your cross, O Lord, and in your holy resurrection; People: for because of your cross joy has come to the whole world. Leader: Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.
