I cut out the large dates with the events and passed them around to the class members. I then called on a date and the student that had that date stood up and read the event and taped it onto the board, creating a chronological timeline. We discussed the events and stories mentioned in the manual regarding each date. Then moved on to the next date, read it, taped it to the timeline, and discussed it. This first page is a teacher cheat sheet I used to lead the discussion and jog my memory. Saturday 24 July 1847 Brigham Young entered the Salt Lake Valley with other pioneers. (homes had flat roofs, Eliza R Snow, umbrellas, mice) October 1847, Salt Lake Valley The first school in the Salt Lake Valley was started by Mary Jane Dilworth (no glass, light, cold, gratitude for school) Sunday 31 October 1847 Brigham Young and company arrived in Winter Quarters at sunset (lost some horses to some Indians, and Brigham Young & Heber C. Kimball were chased by a grizzly bear) Saturday 27 December 1847, Near Winter Quarters President of the Church, with Heber C. Kimball as First Counselor and Willard Richards as Spring 1848, Salt Lake Valley The Crickets and the Seagulls, How the Fasting & Prayers of the Saints were answered August 1848, Salt Lake Valley The Saints held a Harvest Feast (speeches, music, dancing) GRATITUDE in all things even though it had been DIFFICULT
