GOSPEL MEDITATION 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time "And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church." Simon got a new name after his profession of faith. As soon as he declared to Jesus, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God," Jesus renamed him with a title that means "rock." And with that name he gave Peter the mission to be a solid foundation upon which he would build his church. Not Peter's church. Not James or Paul's church. Not Martin Luther's or John Calvin's or anybody else's. This is Jesus' church, the church of Christ himself, that we call the Catholic Church. So it was Christ himself who desired to give authority in the church--"the keys to the kingdom of heaven"--to a human leader. Peter was thus established as the first pope. He exercised a special kind of headship, within the community of the apostles and the church at large, because Jesus gave him the power to do so, not because Peter claimed it for himself. And so too every pope since, right down to our Holy Father today, exercises this unique leadership within the Church. What a gift this is to us! Jesus knew well the human tendency to squabble and disagree, to argue and compete. He knew that the church would be prone to all of this because of her members, and that providing a final voice of authority, saying in effect that "the buck stops here" would be helpful for maintaining unity. As Catholics, even in spite of the differing opinions and perspectives that are manifest in the Church, we nonetheless maintain a strong sense of identity and belief thanks in large part to the papacy. Today, let s give thanks for the pope and pray for him as he strives to lead us closer and closer to Christ. At Home with the Lord Remember Lord and welcome into your Kingdom those who have died and gone before us marked in the sign of faith, especially Rose Vlakancic Please pray for the consolation of her loved ones. Diocesan Collection August 26 & 27 This weekend, we will take up a second collection for the Catholic Communication and Catholic University of America Campaigns. The Catholic Communication Campaign is a collection that helps to support our weekly televised Masses and various catechetical video programs. This is a mandated collection from the Diocese of Pittsburgh where a gift from each parish is expected. This second collection will assure that this gift does not have to come from parish general funds. Thank you for your generosity. Eucharistic Adoration & Veneration of the Relic of St. Jerome at St. Anthony's Chapel On Sunday, September 3rd at 3:00 pm, we will begin to pray the Church's evening prayer before Christ in the Eucharist. The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed in the monstrance at the beginning of evening prayer and the service will conclude with Benediction, Christ imparting His blessing to us in His Eucharistic Presence. Following the service, the faithful who wish to do so will have the opportunity to venerate a relic of one of the saints. For September, it will be the relic of Saint Jerome whose feast day is September 30th. Parish Picnic Just a quick reminder that our Parish Picnic takes place this Sunday, August 27th. The picnic is held at Millvale Riverfront Park from 1:00-6:00 pm. Chicken, Hot Dogs, Beer, Iced Tea, Lemonade & Water are provided. Dinner is served 3:00-5:00 pm. Registrants can pick up their tickets at the picnic entrance table. Feel free to bring folding chairs, tables, snacks, additional beverages & coolers. Directions to the park can be found on page 10 of this bulletin.

Ladies of Charity Meeting Our next Ladies of Charity meeting is Wednesday, August 30th, at St. Aloysius at 7:00 p.m. Hope to see you there! You Are the Christ Are you prepared, like Saint Peter, to profess with your lips that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God? How about to profess it with your life, by the quality of your words and deeds? Are you willing to place your trust in Jesus in the midst of trials, or is it only for when things are going well? We are all called to set our lives firmly on the foundation of Jesus so to stand firm and share his life with others no matter the circumstances of our lives. Join Bishop David Zubik in prayer and worship at one of the On Mission for The Church Alive! Summer Sessions and continue to prepare your heart to share the life and love of God with others even as we await the big changes that are about to take place in your parish and throughout the Diocese of Pittsburgh. 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time August 26 & 27, 2017 A Family Perspective By Bud Ozar -Like Jesus in today s gospel, we are seen by others in different ways. Perhaps the name our family gives us is closest to our true identity. They know us best. Who do they say you are? St. Vincent de Paul Society - Like Peter in today s Gospel, we can find that when we open our eyes to see, our ears to hear and our hearts to experience Jesus presence in our daily lives, God reveals himself to us. This month, through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul enabled the poor to experience Jesus presence by assisting families with utility and rent bills, etc. Thank You!
