Christ Church Grosse Pointe All Saints Sunday November 5, 2017 5:30 pm & 8 am Welcome to this service of Holy Eucharist at Christ Church Grosse Pointe. We hope that this service will help lift you to the presence of God and strengthen you for the week to come. The Announcements Opening Acclamation Holy Eucharist: Rite II Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And blessed be God s kingdom, now and for ever. Amen. The prays the Collect for Purity, and the people respond Amen. Gloria in Excelsis Deo Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. The Collect for the Day The Word of God The Lord be with you. Let us pray. Almighty God, you have knit together your elect in one communion and fellowship in the mystical body of your Son Christ our Lord: Give us grace so to follow your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living, that we may come to those ineffable joys that you have prepared for those who truly love you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.

The people are seated for the reading and the Psalm. The Reading Revelation 7:9-17 Reader Psalm 34:1-10, 22 The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. The Lector and Congregation read the Psalm responsively by half verse. The people stand for the Gospel. The Gospel Matthew 5:1-22 Gospeller The Gospel is read. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Glory to you, Lord Christ. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. The people are seated at the invitation of the preacher. The Sermon A brief period of silence is observed for reflection on the sermon. The Renewal of Baptismal Vows The Reverend Andrew Van Culin Dear sisters and brothers we have been buried with Christ in baptism. So that we may walk with Christ in newness of life, let us now renew our own baptismal promises. Do you reaffirm your renunciation of evil and renew your commitment to Jesus Christ? I do. Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Will you continue in the apostles teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers? Will you persevere in resisting evil, and, whenever you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord?

Will you proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ? Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself? Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being? May Almighty God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has given us a new birth by water and the Holy Spirit, and bestowed upon us the forgiveness of sins, keep us in eternal life by his grace, in Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen. The Aspersing of the Congregation Baptismal water is sprinkled on the congregation as a reminder of their own Baptism. The Prayers of the Leader As we recall the blessed ones who have gone before us, let us offer our prayers to God who crowns the saints with eternal victory. With the angels and archangels and the spirits of the blessed ones who stand before the throne of heaven; we pray to you, O Lord. With Mary, mother of our Savior and God, Jesus the Christ; we pray to you, O Lord. With the holy patriarchs, prophets, apostles, and martyrs; we pray to you, O Lord. With all the saints, witnesses to the gospel; we pray to you, O Lord. For all nations, tribes, peoples, and languages; we pray to you, O Lord. For Michael, our Presiding Bishop, Wendell, our Bishop, and for all here who have gathered in the assembly of the saints; we pray to you, O Lord. For (N.) and all who are being baptized this day into the company of God s holy ones; we pray to you, O Lord. For all who have commended themselves to our prayers, for those who are sick within our community (N.), for those on our parish cycle of prayer (N.); we pray to you, O Lord.

For those who rest in Christ (N.), our ancestors, and all who have gone before us marked with the sign of faith; we pray to you, O Lord. Rejoicing in the fellowship of all the saints and holy ones, let us offer ourselves and one another, and all our life to Christ our God. To you, O Lord, our God. We pray for our own needs and those of others. The people may add their own petitions. Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer. O God, the King of saints, we praise and magnify your holy Name for all your servants who have finished their course in your faith and fear. We pray that, encouraged by their examples, aided by their prayers, and strengthened by their fellowship, we also may be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light; through your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Confession and Absolution Gospeller Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. The people kneel. A brief period of silence is observed. Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought word and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. The offers the absolution, and the people respond Amen. The Peace The peace of the Lord be always with you. The people greet one another with a sign of God s peace and then are seated. The Offertory The people remain seated while the offering is collected.

The Great Thanksgiving Sanctus & Benedictus The Holy Communion The Lord be with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. Eucharistic Prayer A It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and earth; for in the multitude of your saints you have surrounded us with a great cloud of witnesses, that we might rejoice in their fellowship, and run with endurance the race that is set before us; and, together with them, receive the crown of glory that never fades away. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The people kneel or remain standing. Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself, and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world. On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Therefore, we proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts.

Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and forever. AMEN. The Lord s Prayer The Breaking of the Bread And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses,as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. A period of silence is kept. The Invitation The people are seated. Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia. To receive Communion, come to the Communion Station (5:30 pm) or to the Altar Rail (8 am).
