Hear the remarkable reflections of our youth s journey to confront racism, to learn about the Civil Rights Movement, and to serve as leaders of the racial reconciliation God still calls forth. Please RSVP to help with our planning by calling the church office or by email at keatan@saintphilip.net. Lunch will be available, and we suggest a $5 donation with a family maximum donation of $10. Traveling through Baton Rouge, Birmingham, Atlanta and Selma, the St. Philip youth that participated include Eleanor Kimbro, Anne Johnson, Phoebe Murphy, Margaret Fair, George White, and Zack White with Rev. Keatan King and Rev. Omar Rouchon. There were five youth from St. Thomas with Rev. Jonathon Britt. Texas was second in accepting the greatest number of refugees in 2016. Do you know where they came from, how many came, the screening process they had to navigate, how they were assimilated, or how you could have helped them succeed in this traumatic transition? The goal of this all-day workshop is to provide you with answers to these and many other questions. At the completion of the workshop you will have firsthand information on the refugee journey; you will know how Refugee Services of Texas assists refugees; and you will be provided with hands-on tools to enable you to ease the refugees transition to life in Texas. Please click on the link below to read a description of the workshop events and to register. Registration ends October 29, so don t delay. Refugee Equipping Workship Registration The Peacemaking and Social Justice Committee received the Lynn Johnson Social Justice Grant to aid in presenting this workshop. Churches throughout Presbytery of New Covenant have been invited to come.

Philip-Eye Page 3 October 17, 2017 Stewardship Join us October 29 for lunch in Fellowship Hall as we discuss our ministry plans for 2018. We ask for a donation of $8 for lunch. Mission PLARN Project! We have had some folks busily crocheting at home on our mat for the homeless. Let s get together and see how much we have finished. We will also crochet for a while and help those who are having trouble getting the crochet stitch down. I know mine has really improved since we were at Mo. We will not be working on making plarn this time as we still have plenty that needs to be crocheted. All supplies will be furnished. Come Saturday October 28 at 9:00 to the Arts and Crafts room. We should finish up about 12. Call Susan Leonard at 281-704- 5764 for more info. The days since Harvey have been very hectic, but thank you to the many St. Philippians who made time in their busy schedule to help me pack up my home and clean it out. You have no idea how much your help has meant. You always know how to make life brighter for everyone you know. You went above and beyond, and I am touched and grateful. All are welcome. CHURCH & SOCIETY Room 201 October 22 Katharina von Bora and Martin Luther: Reforming Marriage or Marring Reform? When Martin Luther proposed to marry Katharina von Bora, he was not declaring love, but was, rather, making a statement in support of clerical marriage. For years, Luther had been preaching that celibacy was unnatural, leading to hypocrisy and immorality; yet, he himself had remained single. In 1525, he took it upon himself to do as he had said. Luther seems to have been genuinely pleased with the results, but others, including some of his closest colleagues among the reformers, thought it a grave mistake. In this session we will examine the woman who became Luther s life partner and the consequences, personal and theological, of their decision to marry. Presented by Dr. Deborah Burks, retired Associate Professor of English with teaching and research specialties in sixteenth and seventeenth-century drama, poetry, Reformation texts, and women s writing. Her book, Horrid Spectacle, is a study of theater and religious propaganda in the period. October 29 - My Year in Scotland presented by the Rev. Dr. Nathan Carlin.
