Week of May 20, 2012 Lessons for the Leader Have ever been tempted to take advantage of something or someone? What about someone asking to prove r worth? Or someone asking that take r eyes off of what know to be true and good, toward something fleeting? Read Matthew 4:1-4. In His flesh, Jesus was hungry; Satan, knowing this, tested Him with food. However, notice Jesus' response. Jesus knew the best way to beat Satan was to quote Scripture and to rely on God's strength. Read verses 5-7. One of the interesting facts about Satan is He knows God s Word. He knows it, quotes it, and uses it against us, even in the face of the one and only Messiah. Notice how Jesus turns Scripture against Satan and states testing God is not wise (Deuteronomy 6:16). Read verses 8-11. Satan also tested Jesus with power and control. Jesus had power over all this and more, yet Satan still dangled it like a prize in front of Him. After this test, Jesus commanded Satan to leave Him alone. Notice the next phrase, as it is pertinent to Jesus' foundation worship and serve. Reflect on Jesus' temptations. In what ways does Satan tempt? How well do stand up to his temptations? Do know Scripture well enough to resist Satan's ploys? How do rely on God's help to say no to temptation? What temptations do and the children teach face? Pray exemplify Jesus to the children teach. Pray for God's help to overcome temptations. What do these symbols mean? 1aApplication Activities Format: Follow the numbers with arrows for a 30-minute, large group plus 20-minute Application Activities format. (A fast is "not eating food for an extended period of time in order to pray and discover God's will.") Following His fast, Jesus was hungry. The Devil (Satan) said to Jesus, "If You're really God's Son, tell these stones to turn to bread." [Point to the stones.] Listen to what Jesus said. [Select a child to read aloud Matthew 4:4.] Next, the Devil led Jesus to the very top of the temple. The Devil said, "If You're really God's Son, jump off the top of the temple. The Scriptures say, 'God will instruct the angels and they will take care of You. You will not even hit Page 2 of 20

Your foot on a stone.' " Jesus responded by saying [select a child to read aloud Matthew 4:7]. Lastly, the Devil led Jesus up a very high mountain and showed Him all of the land. Jesus saw the kingdoms and their beauty. The Devil said, "I'll give You everything You see if You will just bow down and worship me." Listen to Jesus' response. [Select a child to read aloud Matthew 4:10.] The Devil left Jesus. Immediately God sent angels to take care of Jesus. 11aPray (2 minutes) Guide the children to stay with their partners.
