PASTORAL MESSAGE Dear Faithful: BUILDING UP THE BODY OF CHRIST Our Orthodox Christian privilege as a TRUE STEWARD of His Church is to BUILD UP THE BODY OF CHRIST with our TIME, TALENT and TREASURE. All that we do in our Parish Church, our homes, our workplaces is a spiritual measurement on how we love, serve and acknowledge our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Fill up your Spiritual Life with Christ and empty oneself from the evils and mistrusts we all endure at times. Where there is hatred in your life...forgive Where there is sickness in your life.beseech GOD Where there is suffering in your life...reach OUT TO GOD Where there is loneliness in your life...seek GOD Where there is joy in your life...give THANKS GIVE YOUR LIFE TO JESUS CHRIST AND REJOICE! In His Vineyard, Rev. Fr. James Dokos PROTOPRESBYTER THANK YOU I offer my THANKS and GRATITUDE to all our Faithful Parishioners and Church Organizations who offered their prayers and good wishes on my Nameday of Saint Demetrios. Your cards, flowers, fruit baskets and warm wishes blessed me in a special way!

ASK Father Jim QUESTION: My son Andrew celebrates his Nameday on November 30 th. Where did this saint do his Christian work and how did he die? (M. K.) ANSWER: Saint Andrew, who was a fisherman, accepted the call of Jesus Christ and became a devoted disciple. He went to Byzantium, Scythia and then moved on to Patras, Greece. This Holy Saint is known to be a great missionary and converted many to Christianity. Because of his holy work; he was condemned to death by being crucified on an X-shaped cross. We are told that he hung on this cross for three days and preached the Word until his death. There now stands a beautiful Greek Orthodox Cathedral of Saint Andrew over the spot of his crucifixion. Truly a worthy follower of our Savior! QUESTION: Is the incense used in the Church to ward off the devil? My sister tells me it is to sweeten the scent of the Church or home where it is used. (Carolyn) ANSWER: The incense used in Orthodox Worship (Church or elsewhere) is based on the ancient tradition of this fragrant smoke to symbolically bring the prayers of the faithful to God. LET MY PRAYER BE COUNTED AS IN- CENSE BEFORE THEE AND LIFTING UP OF MY HANDS AS AN EVENING SACRI- FICE. (Psalms 142:2) Incense reminds us of the beauty of God s Love, Teachings and Church. When we pray, we should use the incense to bless ourselves, our Icons, our homes and businesses. ANSWER (cont.) With prayer and devotion to God, we offend the devil with our holy practices and worship. To answer your question incense is used to lift up our prayer requests, to bless our surroundings and to remind us of the sweetness of Christ and His Church. Let your prayers rise in sweetness! QUESTION: Where does the Church stand on the naming of children at Baptism? My son-in-law suggests first names of baseball players. I want him to get serious. Give me some info please. (S.B.) ANSWER: St. John Chrysostom writes: Let us afford our children from the first an incentive to goodness from the name that we give them. Let none of us hasten to call his children after his forebears, his father and mother and grandfather and grandmother, but rather after the righteous martyrs, bishops, apostles. Let one be called, Peter, another John, another bear the name of one of the saints. Let the names of the saints enter our homes through the naming of our children. Baptism and Christian life is so very important. Encourage your children to take some time and realize what s really happening at the Baptism. Their child is receiving the Grace of God through Baptism. The child is given the Gift of the Holy Spirit and the Newness of life in Christ. Baptism is a Godinstituted sacrament. It s really time for all of us to get serious about our faith and life in His Holy Church.

Parish Council News November, 2013 As always, there is much to report from the parish council. On September 19th, Christy Gouletas hosted a meeting of parishioners interested in bringing back our festival in 2014. Approximately 20 people attended and many ideas were exchanged. No determination was made in this meeting, or the ensuing council meeting, whether the festival would take place or not. More work needs to be done in identifying a festival chairperson and committee chairs before a decision can be reached. If you are interested in a significant role in this potential event, please contact Christy. The newly formed Parish Garden Club had its first meeting chaired by Nick Paterakos. This committee of "green thumbs" will be beautifying our grounds with flowers and plantings this fall and again in the spring. If you're interested in helping out, please contact Nick. The bi-annual Clergy-Laity conference took place the first week in October in Sioux City, IA. Mary Ann Langas, Jim Gottreich, and Steve Koulogeorge, along with Fr. Jim represented our parish. Look for a summary of this event at the fall General Assembly on November 24th. For those who attended the farm liturgy followed by a very tasty souvlaki lunch, please join me in thanking Christy Gouletas and Chris Atsaves for organizing and obtaining the food. (George Nassos and George Papamichael did a great job behind the hot coals as well!) Another "thank you" goes out to Chris Atsaves who organized a golf outing for the parish in late September. 63 golfers enjoyed the afternoon at Mission Hills Country Club in Northbrook followed by a dinner and fellowship. Father Michael Stearns, now of St. Spyridon in Sheboygan, WI came down and joined us for the day. (He took up golf this summer and wanted to show us his stuff!). It was great to see him again. As we enter the Thanksgiving season, let us be constantly reminded of the blessings bestowed upon us and be thankful to our Lord and God. Jim Santos Acting Parish Council President OFFER your 2013 STEWARDSHIP to support our Parish Ministries and Community Life. TIME...TALENT...TREASURE!

What does your Stewardship enable us to do? September was the beginning of the new Ecclesiastical year. It is also the beginning of much activity at our Parish where we restart the many different Ministries at Saints Peter and Paul. There are many different Ministries at our Parish where you and your family have the opportunity to participate to strengthen your faith, gain more fellowship and increase the life of our Parish community. Here is a list of the programs that we began just in the month of September. Outreach Sack Lunch Program (fed homeless in Evanston), Liturgy at Wagner Farm, New Hellenic Choral Group, Cancer Support Group, Divorce Rebuilders Group, Orthodox Parents Association (O.P.A), New Garden Club, Blessing of the Animals, Youth Group Kick-off and Barbecue, Coffee Connection (Adult education), Men's Bible Study (Thurs. 6:30am), Adult Bible Study (Wed, 10:00am), Philoptochos membership night. Reformation of the Dynamis Group, "Old Timer" basketball (age 40+) and the return of the Golf Outing. Here are some of the Ministries that concern the Youth that also began in September. Agape Pre School, Hope Group, Sunday School, Greek School, Faith-Love-Joy (grade K-5), Jr. High GOYA (grade 6-8), High School GOYA, 3/4 th grade coed basketball, 5/6 th grade coed basketball, 7/8 th grade basketball, High School girls basketball, High School boys basketball. If you add in the 5 Sunday Liturgies, Liturgy of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross and the Liturgy of the Nativity of the Theotokos, you can see that September was a very busy month for everyone in the Parish. Plenty of things going on for everyone. October was Stewardship Month, It was time for us to reflect on the meaning of Christ in our lives. Time to reflect on our ability to give to God as an act of gratitude for all the gifts we enjoy. Time to check to make sure that our pledges for 2013 are fulfilled. Time for those who have yet to give in 2013 (or forgot 2012) to reflect on the importance of our Parish doing Christ's work. In the month of November the Parish will begin our 2014 Stewardship Campaign. You will be receiving a Stewardship packet along with a 2014 Pledge Card. Please take time to reflect on what your gift to Christ and HIS Church will be. The Orthodox teaching of Stewardship is that giving should be sacrificial and the answer to the question of how much to give rests within your own heart. Sunday December 8 will be "Stewardship Sunday" We will have a special coffee hour and a table set up where all of our Parishioners can turn in your 2014 Pledge cards and show your commitment to Christ and pledge support to our wonderful Community of Saints Peter and Paul. Did you know that last year the cost of Janitorial Service and Janitorial Supplies was $43,683. Portions of your contributions help us keep our Parish clean. Thank you to everyone who made Contributions for 2013. Stewardship Committee

Youth Corner Ministries HOPE: The Hope Group is continuing its ever important ministry of fellowship and foundational introduction to life in the Orthodox Church, learning about such champions of Orthodoxy as, Sts. Emperor Justinian & Empress Theodora, and St Demetrios. Faith/Love/Joy: We had our first official meeting on October 1 st. There was a great turn out and a lot of enthusiasm from our elementary school children. The Faith, Love, & Joy kids used a pumpkin to learn about how God cleans our souls and then places His light within our hearts. Jr. G.O.Y.A/G.O.Y.A.: Thank you to all the Jr GOYANS and GOYANS who volunteered to help entertain the younger children in our parish while their parents were listening to the OPA Lecture on marriage. Jr. G.O.Y.A.: The Jr. GOYA roasted marshmallows around a bonfire and talked about how to live our Orthodox faith in in a world that is sometimes hostile to the Church. GOYA: The reinvigoration of the GOYA program is progressing and we thank all those high school students who have stepped up to take ownership of this wonderful ministry. There is a lot of excitement around the November Lock-In as the next fellowship event. Upcoming Events: Please check the website and the Youth Facebook page for upcoming events and information. + Fr. Catherine the Great Martyr of Alexandria SAINT CATHERINE...November 25th Saint Catherine, who was from Alexandria, was the daughter of Constas (or Cestus). She was an exceedingly beautiful maiden, most chaste, and illustrious in wealth, lineage, and learning. By her steadfast understanding, she utterly vanquished the passionate and unbridled soul of Maximinus, the tyrant of Alexandria; and by her eloquence, she stopped the mouths of the so-called philosophers who had been gathered to dispute with her. She was crowned with the crown of martyrdom in the year 305. Her holy relics were taken by Angels to the holy mountain of Sinai, where they were discovered many years later; the famous monastery of Saint Catherine was originally dedicated to the Holy Transfiguration of the Lord and the Burning Bush, but later was dedicated to Saint Catherine. According to the ancient usage, Saints Catherine and Mercurius were celebrated on the 24th of this month, whereas the holy Hieromartyrs Clement of Rome and Peter of Alexandria were celebrated on the 25th. The dates of the feasts of these Saints were interchanged at the request of the Church and Monastery of Mount Sinai, so that the festival of Saint Catherine, their patron, might be celebrated more festively together with the Apodosis of the Feast of the Entry of the Theotokos. Apolytikion in the Plagal of the First Tone Let us praise the most auspicious bride of Christ, the divine Katherine, protectress of Sinai, our aid and our help. For, she brilliantly silenced the eloquence of the impious by the sword of the spirit, and now, crowned as a martyr, she asks great mercy for all. Kontakion in the Second Tone O friends of martyrs, now divinely raise up a renewed chorus, praising the all-wise Katherine. For, she proclaimed Christ in the arena, trampled on the serpent, and spat upon the knowledge of the orators.

Upcoming Dates in 2013 November 10 November 24 December 1 (note date change from Dec. 8) Coffee Connection: Connecting in Faith and Fellowship An Educational Ministry open to all adults Sessions will focus on the theme Understanding What We Believe: The Creed as an Expression of Our Faith Come join us for coffee and conversation!
