Decision Making and the Will of God Part 1 Confusion About How Godly Decision Making Works -2-part talk, may be shaken after the first part, but will find freedom and relief in the end -Importance of decision making in our lives -Like me, many of you may have encountered people speaking about hearing God s voice or being led by the Spirit, or discovering God s will for their life through these various means The Modern Evangelical Perspective: The Blueprint View 1) God s made all the major decisions of my life for me already - God s blueprint for my life 2) God reveals these personalized blueprints to us through a series of subjective clues (having an inner peace, feeling led, hearing the voice of God, open and closed doors, confirmations, etc.) 3) Our job is to take note of these clues and interpret them so we can know which decisions to make -Today, we ll examine this view by examining the biblical phrases used to support the view Feeling led by the Spirit Blueprint view says: We are led by the Spirit to the decision God wants us to make Rom. 8: 9, 12-14 However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him 12 So then, brethren, we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh 13 for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. Gal. 5: 16-24 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh. 17 For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law. 19 Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality...those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience 24 Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Matt. 4: 1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. The cited passages say: We are led by the Spirit into godly living. The Spirit once led Christ to a physical location. Hearing a still small voice

Blueprint view says: God speaks to our hearts using a still small voice and tells us the decisions we re to make I Kings 19: 11-13 And behold, the LORD was passing by! And a great and strong wind was rending the mountains and breaking in pieces the rocks before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. 12 After the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire; and after the fire a sound of a gentle blowing. 13 When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood in the entrance of the cave. And behold, a still small voice came to him and said, What are you doing here, Elijah? The cited passage say: God once had a conversation with His prophet Elijah through a lowvolume voice. The Importance of Context and Original Meaning Taking biblical verses and phrases out of context is probably the church s major problem today in how we approach Scripture and it leads to all kinds of erroneous readings and doctrines. What if you told your child to pick up his things and he said okay then went off and instead dished himself up a bowl of ice cream? If we demand that people not twist our communications to mean something they never were intended to mean, shouldn t we at least extend the same courtesy to God s communications? A text can never mean what it never meant A text without a context is a pretext for confusion. Having a peace about something Blueprint view says: We can tell that God has given the go-ahead to our decisions if we have a peace about it. Col. 3: 12-15 So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience; 13 bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you. 14 Beyond all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity. 15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body; and be thankful. The cited passage says: Stop fighting in the church, but let the peace of Christ be the thing that rules between everyone. -Are decisions always easy? Is that a bad thing? Open and Closed Doors Blueprint view says: God tells us what decisions to make by opening a door and what decisions not to make by closing a door. I Cor. 16: 8-9 But I will remain in Ephesus until Pentecost; 9 for a wide door for effective service has opened to me, and there are many adversaries.

2 Cor. 2:12 Now when I came to Troas for the gospel of Christ and when a door was opened for me in the Lord, 13 I had no rest for my spirit, not finding Titus my brother; but taking my leave of them, I went on to Macedonia. Acts 16: 26-28 Suddenly there came a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison house were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and everyone s chains were unfastened. 27 When the jailer awoke and saw the prison doors opened, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself, supposing that the prisoners had escaped. 28 But Paul cried out with a loud voice, saying, Do not harm yourself, for we are all here! The cited passages says: Sometimes God gave Paul certain opportunities, but Paul did not see those opportunities as binding directives that he was obligated to pursue. Fleeces and other signs Blueprint view says: If we lay out a fleece, God will give us a directive through that object or event about what decision we re supposed to make. Judges 6: 14-16, 36-40 The LORD looked at him and said, Go in this your strength and deliver Israel from the hand of Midian. Have I not sent you? 15 He said to Him, O Lord, how shall I deliver Israel? Behold, my family is the least in Manasseh, and I am the youngest in my father s house. 16 But the LORD said to him, Surely I will be with you, and you shall defeat Midian as one man. Then Gideon said to God, If You will deliver Israel through me, as You have spoken, 37 behold, I will put a fleece of wool on the threshing floor. If there is dew on the fleece only, and it is dry on all the ground, then I will know that You will deliver Israel through me, as You have spoken. 38 And it was so. When he arose early the next morning and squeezed the fleece, he drained the dew from the fleece, a bowl full of water. 39 Then Gideon said to God, Do not let Your anger burn against me that I may speak once more; please let me make a test once more with the fleece, let it now be dry only on the fleece, and let there be dew on all the ground. 40 God did so that night; for it was dry only on the fleece, and dew was on all the ground. The cited passage says: God was once patient with cowardly Gideon who continually questioned what God had commanded him to do. A couple of our tendencies: Confirmations -Not putting out supernatural fleeces -Not making the decision in question falsifiable -Our overall tendencies towards inviting a nebulous, ambiguous result -God is a God of clarity, not confusion Blueprint view says: God confirms through signs the previous unclear directives he gave us.

Deuteronomy 19:15 A single witness shall not rise up against a man on account of any iniquity or any sin which he has committed; on the evidence of two or three witnesses a matter shall be confirmed. The cited passage says: Two or three third-party witnesses are required to confirm whether the legal evidence brought against someone in a court of law is true or false. Does God Give Guidance in the New Testament? Yes. -It s very rare. It s the exception, not the rule -It s an intrusion and contrary to wisdom -It s supernatural -It s clear -It s now part of God s moral will and we are obligated to obey it The Pagan Impulse Summary -Reading divine messages in natural events -Creating new mediums for divine messages when we nature doesn t readily offer them -God sets limits on our knowledge in two ways: -He has made us finite -He limited our knowledge to the past and present, the future is off-limits -He in essence says Consider your limits and trust Me. -The Bible doesn t teach that we get special personalized guidance from God through being led, having a peace about something, open/close doors, seeing confirmations, etc. -Special guidance is sometimes given in the N.T., but it is rare, intrusive, clear, and those people have a moral obligation to follow it. -Next week, we ll look at what the Bible says about God s will Table Questions -Why would our modern evangelical culture and our modern American culture in general be disposed to something like the Blueprint view whereas previous generations were not? -If God doesn t give us special guidance for the various decisions in our lives, what could be an alternative way we are supposed to make decisions?

Decision Making and the Will of God Part 2 Review from last week: -We examined the Blueprint view of decision making -The Bible doesn t teach that we get special personalized guidance from God through being led by the Spirit, having a peace about something, open/close doors, seeing confirmations, etc. -Special guidance is sometimes given in the N.T., but it is rare, intrusive, clear, and those people have a moral obligation to follow it. What is God s will anyway? 1.) God s sovereign will: God s decree for everything that is to happen. It includes things he both decrees and permits. Gen. 50: 17, 19-20 And now, please forgive the transgression of the servants of the God of your father. And Joseph wept when they spoke to him 19 But Joseph said to them, Do not be afraid, for am I in God s place? 20 As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good in order to bring about this present result, to preserve many people alive. Daniel 4:35 But He does according to His will in the host of heaven And among the inhabitants of earth; And no one can ward off His hand Or say to Him, What have You done? Proverbs 16:33 The lot is cast into the lap, But its every decision is from the LORD. Ephesians 1:10-12 In Him 11 also we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to His purpose who works all things after the counsel of His will, 12 to the end that we who were the first to hope in Christ would be to the praise of His glory. Romans 9:19 You will say to me then, Why does He still find fault? For who resists His will? -Nobody can disobey God s sovereign will -Nobody can know this will either, though God may reveal slices at times 2) God s moral will: How God wants me to live my life. This includes commandments that we are expected to follow.

It includes anything we re expected to do and are disobeying if we don t do. Romans 2:17-19, 21 But if you bear the name Jew and rely upon the Law and boast in God, 18 and know His will and approve the things that are essential, being instructed out of the Law, 19 and are confident that you yourself are a guide to the blind, a light to those who are in darkness you, therefore, who teach another, do you not teach yourself? 2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance. 1 Thessalonians 4:3 For this is the will of God, your sanctification Ephesians 5:17-18 So then do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit 1 Peter 2: 13-15 Submit yourselves for the Lord s sake to every human institution, whether to a king as the one in authority, 14 or to governors as sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and the praise of those who do right. 15 For such is the will of God that by doing right you may silence the ignorance of foolish men. 1 Thessalonians 5:15-18 See that no one repays another with evil for evil, but always seek after that which is good for one another and for all people. 16 Rejoice always; 17 pray without ceasing; 18 in everything give thanks; for this is God s will for you in Christ Jesus. -What is God s moral will for us overall? -That we be saved (2 Peter 3:9) - be sanctified (1 Thess. 4:3) - be filled with the Spirit (Ephesians 5:18) - submit to proper authorities (1 Peter 2:13-15) - rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in everything (I Thess 5:16-18) -Though God wants us to obey his moral will, it can be disobeyed. People and demons do it all the time. -God s moral will can be known and is expected to be obeyed because it s known -It applies generally to everyone, there s no personalized aspect to it. -God s moral will applies to our major decisions a bit differently than we may expect: It s not: Who I marry What job I take Where I live Instead it s: What kind of husband I am What kind of employee I am What kind of neighbor I am -God s ultimate moral goal:

Romans 8:28-29 And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. 29 For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son -God s ultimate moral goal for each of us is that we be just like Jesus Christ, reflecting His glory What about God s blueprint will for my life? -When we search through Scripture, we find the idea of God s will falls into the categories of sovereign and moral will. -We find that the idea of God s personalized will for my life where he decides everything for me then lets me know so we can make the decision for myself doesn t exist it s not in the Bible. What the Blueprint view would have to look like: God s Sovereign Will God s Blueprint for My Life God s Moral Will What do and don t we observe in the Biblical text concerning decision making? What we do observe: -Commands that are expected to be obeyed -Places where important decisions were left up to us -Freedom of choice in the area of non-moral issues -Indication that our personal desires (or issues of personal conscience) are important

1 Corinthians 7:8-9 But I say to the unmarried and to widows that it is good for them if they remain even as I. 9 But if they do not have self-control, let them marry; for it is better to marry than to burn with passion. -Make wise use of our time Ephesians 5:15-16 Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise, 16 making the most of your time, because the days are evil. -Pray, not for guidance, but for wisdom James 1:5 But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him. -Like a good parent, God has dignified us with the ability to make decisions for ourselves -What we don t observe: -Any place where we re told to wait on the Lord before making major decisions -Any place telling us to wait for God s decision The Wisdom Model Using the guidelines of God s word and wisdom, you have the freedom to do anything you want with God s blessing. Love God and do whatever you please. Augustine God s Sovereign Will God s Moral Will 1 2 3 Wisdom 4

Category #1 Category #2 Category #3 -All events/decisions that will not happen God sovereignly ordained something else -All events/decisions that God sovereignly ordained. This includes both things that please him and sinful things that violate his moral will -This gives us comfort and confidence to know that God is working through my decisions to accomplish His sovereign will -All events/decisions that are within God s moral will, though they may be foolish -God s moral will defines the parameters of my moral freedom -Job: do I work as a butcher, a baker, or a drug dealer -Marriage: Who do I marry? -You must marry a Christian -You must marry a member of the opposite sex -You must marry someone free to marry Category #4 -All events/decisions that are both moral and wise (or perhaps non-moral). It also includes personal factors like personal preferences, personality types, gifting, aptitudes, issues of conscience, etc. -Personal happiness is relevant -Wisdom - The right use of knowledge. Wisdom defines those things that are sound -Where do we get wisdom? -Pray for it (James 1:5) -Solomon asked God directly for it -Counsel, instruction, research, experience -The result of making a good, wise decision is peace. Not the peace of having a peace about something but the peace of mind from making a good decision -Without a clear divine directive make the wisest, most practical, most desirable choice available

Summary -The Bible teaches that there are two ways of understanding the concept of God s will : God s sovereign will and God s moral will. It doesn t teach that He has a personalized will where he s made the decisions for our lives then tells us so we can make those decisions. -We do see in Scripture a method of decision making that gives us genuine freedom within God s moral will. It utilizes everyday factors like wisdom and personal desire. Table Questions: -How does the clarity of a command affect a person s obligation to obey it? -What s the difference between God s sovereign will and God s moral will? -Can God use our sin for good? How? Does that mean we should sin intentionally? -Does God s moral will change with culture?
