WORSHIP OF GOD IN CHRIST July 31, 2016 11:00 a.m. CHIMING OF THE HOUR GATHERING AS GOD S PEOPLE PRELUDE Sarabande... J. S. Bach LIGHTING THE CANDLES We light the two candles on the communion table to remind us of the oneness of Christ with God and the oneness of Christ with humankind. OPENING THE BIBLE We open the Bible to remind us that God speaks to the people through the Holy Word. CALL TO WORSHIP So many things draw us away from God. People: We are tempted by trinkets and gadgets. We place our interest in temporal things. People: But Christ calls us to a higher level. We are called to focus our lives on living as God would have us live. People: We are called to be open to ways of service and compassion. **HYMN 382 God, the Father of Your People... HOLY MANNA ** INVOCATION WELCOME ** PASSING THE PEACE Traditional Greeting: The peace of Christ be with you. Response: And also with you.
LISTENING FOR GOD S WORD HYMN 384 The Bond of Love (stanza 1)... SKILLINGS (During the singing of this hymn, the children are invited to come forward for the Children s Sermon.) CHILDREN S SERMON (At the conclusion of the Children s Sermon, all children, kindergarten through grade two, are invited to attend Children s Church.) NEW TESTAMENT LESSON... Colossians 3:1-14(NIV) 1 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. 3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. 5 Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. 6 Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. 7 You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. 8 But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. 9 Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. 11 Here there is no Gentile or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all. 12 Therefore, as God s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13 Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. This is the Word of the Lord! People: Thanks be to God! People: Ordinands: Yes, I do. Ordinands: Yes, I will. People: People: THE SERVICE OF DEACON ORDINATION Brett Lissenden, Michelle Proffitt There are different ministries in the life and work of Christ s Church. But we serve the same Lord. God works through all of us for the upbuilding of the church and the saving restoration of humanity. Some members are chosen to minister as Deacons: to model Christian maturity and morality, to promote church harmony, to give an effective witness, to care for the congregation, and to attend to the spiritual health of its members. Ordinands, God has called you through the church to serve in this special way. Do you trust in Christ as head of the Church, and do you accept the meaning and power of the biblical witness in your life? Do you believe the Church has a mission relevant to the opportunities of this time? Will you exercise your Deacon ministry as a committed follower of Christ, taking to heart the priorities of our church and its ministry to all people, and continually seeking meaningful ways of doing the Lord s work? Do you, members of University Baptist Church, accept these new Deacons, chosen by God through the voice of this congregation, to lead us in the work of Christ? Yes, we do. Do you promise to pray for them, to encourage them, and to trust in them to serve us? Yes, we do.
By authority of the Holy Spirit, let us ordain Brett Lissenden and Michelle Proffitt to the Office of Deacon in University Baptist Church. THE LAYING ON OF HANDS (all members are invited to participate by offering a brief prayer of blessing or words of encouragement) You are now a Deacon and a spiritual leader of this congregation. Whatever you do, in word or act, do everything in the name of the Lord, giving thanks to God. Claim your ministry. Rejoice in the work entrusted to you. Look to the future with hope. THE ORDINATION PRAYER THE INSTALLATION OF DEACONS Lynne Gardner, Brett Lissenden, Donna Marshall, Rachel Miller, Michelle Proffitt, Ed Smith, Raynell Stokes, Jennifer Wagoner, Joe Zhu People: We do. Deacons: We will. You have affirmed these Deacons to have spiritual leadership and care of this congregation. Do you promise to uphold them by giving them the honor, encouragement, and cooperation befitting their office? Deacons, after prayer and deep consideration, have you determined to undertake the Office of Deacon in this congregation, and will you strive, to the best of your ability and with God s help, to serve this church s spiritual well-being? Will you comfort our members in sorrow, counsel them in trouble, and visit them in sickness? Then I now declare that you are duly installed in the Office and Ministry of Deacon in our church. Let your service be a great blessing, and may this congregation be ever glad it has chosen you to serve. Amen. THE INSTALLATION PRAYER
