Holy Eucharist Christmas Eve December 24, 2014 6:00pm

Lift up your heads, O ye gates; even lift them up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in. Welcome ~ Psalm 24:9 I am deeply grateful that we are together and that this parish is part of your observance of a holy Christmas. It is wonderful to pause with believers around the world celebrating the birth of the King of glory, the source and inspiration of justice, reconciliation, and peace. Joy to the world. The Lord is come. The Rev. Dr. James Herbert Cooper, Rector Prelude Magnificat Brian Kelly (b. 1934) My soul doth magnify the Lord: and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath mgnified me: and holy, holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him throughout all generations. He hath shewed strength with his arm: he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat: and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things: and the rich he hath sent empty away. He rememb ring his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel: and he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed, for ever. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen. Noël Suisse Louis-Claude Daquin (1694-1772) Entrance Rite Rector s Welcome Processional Hymn standing 2

Collect of the Day The Celebrant prays a prayer based on the theme of the day. The Word of God Music: William Mathias (1934-1992) 1976 Oxford University Press.Used by permission. First Lesson seated Isaiah 9:2-7 Following the reading Lector The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. Psalm 96 seated Sung by the choir Sir Edward Cuthbert Bairstow (1874-1946) Sing to the LORD a new song; * sing to the LORD, all the whole earth. Sing to the LORD and bless his Name; * proclaim the good news of his salvation from day to day. Declare his glory among the nations * and his wonders among all peoples. For great is the LORD and greatly to be praised; * he is more to be feared than all gods. As for all the gods of the nations, they are but idols; * but it is the LORD who made the heavens. Oh, the majesty and magnificence of his presence! * Oh, the power and the splendor of his sanctuary! Ascribe to the LORD, you families of the peoples; * ascribe to the LORD honor and power. Ascribe to the LORD the honor due his Name; bring offerings and come into his courts. Worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness; * let the whole earth tremble before him. Tell it out among the nations: The LORD is King! * he has made the world so firm that it cannot be moved; he will judge the peoples with equity. Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad; let the sea thunder and all that is in it; * let the field be joyful and all that is therein. Then shall all the trees of the wood shout for joy before the Lord when he comes, * when he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world with righteousness * and the peoples with his truth. Second Lesson Titus 2:11-14 Following the reading Lector The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. 5

Gospel Hymn standing Words: French carol; tr. James Chadwick (1813-1882), alt. Music: Gloria, French carol; arr. Edward Shippen Barnes (1887-1958) 6

Holy Gospel Luke 2:1-20 Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. People Glory to you, Lord Christ. Following the reading Deacon The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ. Sermon The Rector The Nicene Creed standing We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Prayers of the People The people respond to each petition with Hear our prayer. 7

The Peace Celebrant The peace of the Lord be always with you. People And also with you. The People offer a greeting of peace to one another. Announcements seated Offering Anthem The Dream Isaiah Saw Glenn L. Rudolph (b. 1951) Lions and oxen will sleep in the hay, leopards will join with the lambs as they play, wolves will be pastured with cows in the glade, blood will not darken the earth that God made. Little child whose bed is straw, take new lodgings in my heart. Bring the dream Isaiah saw: life redeemed from fang and claw. Peace will pervade more than forest and field: God will transfigure the Violence concealed deep in the heart and in systems of gain, ripe for the judgment the Lord will ordain. Little child whose bed is straw, take new lodgings in my heart. Bring the dream Isaiah saw: justice purifying law. Nature reordered to match God s intent, nations obeying the call to repent, all of creation completely restored, filled with the knowledge and love of the Lord. Little child whose bed is straw, take new lodgings in my heart. Bring the dream Isaiah saw: knowledge, wisdom, worship, awe. Thomas Troeger (b. 1945) The Holy Communion In the Holy Communion we experience the Real Presence of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ; all adults and children who desire to receive Him are encouraged to come forward. Anthem A Spotless Rose Herbert Howells (1892-1983) A spotless rose is blowing, sprung from a tender root, of ancient seers foreshowing, of Jesse promised fruit; its fairest bud unfolds to light amid the cold, cold winter, and in the dark midnight. The rose which I am singing, whereof Isaiah said, is from its sweet root springing in Mary, purest Maid; for through our God s great love and might, the blessed babe she bare us in a cold, cold winter s night. O Magnum Mysterium Francis Poulenc (1899-1963) O magnum mysterium et admirabile sacramentum, et animalia viderent Dominum natum, jacentem in praesepio. Beata virgo cujus viscera meruerunt portare Dominum Christum. O great mystery, and wondrous sacrament, that animals should see the new-born Lord lying in their manger! Blessed is the Virgin whose womb was worthy to bear the Lord Jesus Christ. Communion Hymn sung by all, kneeling Words: Joseph Mohr (1792-1848); tr.
